Greek letters in CR4 postings. How do we do it??

12/22/2007 3:49 AM

In a recent posting, I noted that in an equation, the author was able to use the Greek alphabet for such things as pi, theta, phi, psi,... How does one do this on CR4? It would beat the heck out of writing the letter name in English.

As I write this there is a toolbar above the message box. If I click on the blue Ω sign (just left of the ) it brings up a whole page of special characters....

Similarly the X2 box and X2 boxes allow you to do subscrips and superscripts.

And if you want some really fancy characters, may I suggest the use of the AMP Font Viewer from:

http://www.ampsoft.net/

It is freeware, no bugs, malware, spyware, and I have been using it for years....

{|}~€‚ƒ„…†‡ˆ‰Š‹ŒŽ''""•–—˜™š›œžŸ ¡¢£¤¥¦§¨©ª«¬®¯°±²³´µ¶·¸¹º»¼½¾¿ÀÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈÉÊËÌÍÎÏÐÑÒÓÔÕÖרÙÚÛÜÝÞßàáâ

The above are just a few of the special characters available, in various fonts and styles.

Hope that assists you.....

Re: Greek letters in CR4 postings. How do we do it??

A Mormon was seated next to an Irishman on a flight from London to NY.

After the plane was airborne, drink orders were taken.

The Irishman asked for a whiskey, which was promptly brought and placed before him.

The flight attendant then asked the Mormon if he would like a drink.

The Mormon replied in disgust, "I'd rather be savagely raped by a dozen whores than let liquor touch my lips."

The Irishman handed his drink back to the attendant and said, "Me, too! I didn't know we had a choice."

You can also get at these queer symbols from Word by selecting Insert > Symbol, then cutting & pasting into your post.

BTW I've just downloaded & tried the AMP product, which seems to do what it says on the packet, but I usually have Word open already anyway, so will still use that for stuff I can't get from the button.

Guess what Mac users? We have the characters too.

Go to the start menu/Accessories/system tools/ character map. When you find the sign you want, move the arrow over the sign and it will tell you the key sequence needed to produce the Greek sign. You must use the numeric key pad for the numbers shown. Try this; hold down the ALT key, use the number pad and use this sequence; the number 0, 1,7,8. ² ..or 0,1,7,7,± .. or 0,1,7,9, ³ and so on.

Other than that it's all Greek to me.

Re: Greek letters in CR4 postings. How do we do it??

Sorry, no Start Menu on a Mac.

There's an Apple menu, though.

In OS X you can use lots of foreign alphabets and keyboards through the "International" control panel in "System Preferences" (accessible through the Apple menu). It all comes with the OS.

If you use Windows, you'll have to locate the fancy fonts and symbols you want to use, and install them on the computer. Most word processing programs come with a decent selection of fonts, which you may be able to use in your e-mails, if your e-mail client has the ability to send html mail.

It's always a good idea to check before you send a message with symbols or foreign alphabets, because the recipient's computer has to have the same font in order for it to display. You can open a free e-mail account with gmail or Hotmail or Yahoo and e-mail your work to yourself to get an idea of what your recipient may see.

Even converting a message to a PDF attachment has its limitations. A PDF that looks fine on the screen may print symbols as garbage characters unless the file is printed as an image on the receiving end.

For CR4 postings, the engineering toolbar is probably your best bet, because the fonts and symbols available there will display correctly when they are published in the Forum. For everything else, experiment!

Not sure if it will work with Linux, but the normal why to print extent character is to hold down the Alt key and type in its number. The numbers start at 127 = ⌂, up too 254 = ■.

eg: 127 + 0 to 10 = ⌂ Ç ü é â ä à å ç ê ë .... etc.

Hope this helps Regards JD.

Hello John,

In the Edit Box, it shows as true size.

In the submitted message the size is dependent on your Monitor settings and Web Browser settings.

Firefox Settings: View -> Text Size -> Choose what text size you want to view.

Internet Explorer: I gave up using that, when I found out how much better Firefox was and

You can rest easy, now you know.....

No Sparky, it wasn't a browser or monitor size problem the type changed size half way through typing, it was a CR4 problem, don't know why it should do that though, must have been a temporary glitch.

Re: Greek letters in CR4 postings. How do we do it??

That's right one of those..."almost tick mark" check marks.

When I first had need of one in an MS Office document there were none (no searchable, coded/ASCI) character to be found in the Symbols file under the Insert menu. Checking online at Microsoft didn't help either. Finally I was compelled to draw my own, both with Paint and, later, as a bit map file using Insert>Object>Bit Map. I eventually encountered a few, particularly curvaceous ones on the Web that I could capture and save. But this approach necessitates usually having to re-size for insertion within text in a document--often an inconvenience if the tick symbol pic must be copied and pasted numerous times. It is a symbol used so commonly, as in forms and such, I was surprise to discover that a coded, standard character set symbol has apparently never been created(?). True, X's are typically used instead, but, for one, that eliminates using X as an exclusion character in a form (where, for clarity or to eliminate ambiguity, it is sometimes preferable to "dis-indicate" rather than accept (rather than "check off") a particular option.

Hope this has adequately exposed the root of my question.
