Guests Starting New Threads...

01/01/2008 5:45 PM

I have noticed over the past months that many threads started by guests turn into a discussion amongst the regulars by about the second post, and there is no evidence that the guest ever comes back take advantage of the really good advice.

So how about:

1) Requiring a person to register in order to start a new thread (a guest would not have to register to post to an existing thread, just to start one).

2) If you don't make them register, at least make them supply a e-mail, and then subscribe that e-mail to the thread so that they will get the results of the discussion..

Just a thought....

Steve,

I'm new to this CR4 (which stands for what by the way?) as you can see this is my first post and I'm pretty excited about it. But about you're suggestions, I think if a guest starts a thread looking for help or just a discussion then doesn't come back to follow up, its their own loss. From the threads that I have read so far, this would be a big loss. And it would benefit everyone else if a good thread actually developed as a result of the anonymous entry. On top of that, I have seen threads started by registered users that do not come back to any of the responses. I like your idea 2...

"2) If you don't make them register, at least make them supply a e-mail, and then subscribe that e-mail to the thread so that they will get the results of the discussion.."

However, there really wouldn't be anything stopping someone from putting in a dummy email just to put it in. Or even possibly worse, that will deter the person from putting in something that might spark a conversation that would potentially be helpful to others that use CR4.

With all that in mind, I totally agree with you and was just playing devil's advocate. I believe that registering is the right thing to do, and using the help and suggestions provided by others.

FYI CR4 is "Conference Room 4". I forget why #4 but some of the old heads around here can probably tell you.

Anyhow, Welcome aboard.

Conference Room 4 just happens to be the one nearest to where the CR4 admin team sit in their real GlobalSpec life building. And this is the second (or is it third now? CL can confirm) incarnation of the board as a forum. It began life as a newsletter back when...oooh where's my zimmer frame?!

Re: Guests starting new threads...

Hello Steve S,

As I see it, we have a single special person who writes most topics and Posts, yet never really receives the credit for so doing.

As you say, that very special person, who Posts every day of the week, and many times each day, loses some of the benefits he/she would receive if a proper Registered Member at CR4.

But if that visitor was MADE TO REGISTER, in certain jurisdictions that may bring large repercussions on that special person's head.

I refer to the CR4's most frequent Poster "Guest", of course.

All are free to Register, or not. That is a special strength of the CR4 Forum.

Likewise, although some original Topic Thread Starters may return, but never say thanks, or acknowledge even returning and reading the replies to their question/s, that is also up to them.

It is generally good manners to return and reply, but some are shy or embarrassed, some hesitant in case a large "cannon" is brought to bear on them, for asking a Question with such a simple answer.

Perhaps they might feel rather silly.

True foolishness means never asking Questions, and thus never learning anything, in case one appears ignorant, or foolish.

We are all here on this Earth to help one another, for the few short years we are allocated, as I see it, and this CR4 Friendly Community Forum and the like, are an excellent way of assisting others.

Everyone can learn, nobody knows it all, we are all still in School

Kind Regards.....

As you may have noticed, there are gurus, and then there are gurus, the former being quantitative, the latter being qualitative, and variations in between. Most of us that have been around for a little while know the difference, unfortunately the newcomers have to figure this out the hard way.

But I suppose there is a life lesson of some value to be learned here, to not judge with title as sole criteria. The posts/good answer ratio is a valid factor to consider, but it is unfair to and/or is an inaccurate reflection of those who have aquired their status, partly or entirely, before the good answer feature was introduced.

If there was the equivalent of an A.D. date (the date "good answers" were introduced), and that posts and good answers were counted and indicated from that date (maybe even a p/ga ratio or index?), we might all get a clearer picture of what type of guru we are looking at.

There should also be a special status for gurus such as Del, as many of his unique and invaluable contributions defy quantification.

I cast my vote for Del as our Spiritual Guru!

There's also users who wait for the daily digest & those who scan the sections throughout the day. the latter tend to score more good answers, picking off the low hanging fruit as soon as the more basic questions are posted. A ratio system would tend to amplify the addictions of some members. The posting of the # of good answers next to the members name has already increased the competitive streak in some members.

I resemble that remark!

I can catch Del and others as long as the 'bad answer' scorecard doesn't come into play!

And then there's users such as myself, who seem to get the prompt a day (workday, not necessarily 24 hours) late, so all of my posts are usually follow-ons. Still, I did somehow manage to pull one GA off!

Re: Guests starting new threads...

In some other forums, registration is required before you can ask a question or start a discussion. All a guest can do is read the posts.

I think one of the reasons for CR4's popularity is that guests can come in and post whether they are registered or not. Some of these guys are probably here just for the duration of the thread. In that case, why register if I'll be gone in a few days?

I think a lot of the mainstays are here because they like to help (or they just like the bantering that goes one here ). Their first experience was probably to ask for help. Then when they got a taste of helping others, they decided to stay. That's certainly true in my case.

Yes, it's sad that a lot of posters don't even comment or give feedback on what they learned. It's nice to know if a suggestion worked or was a perfect fit. But that applies to the registered members as well as the guests.

Excellent Idea! I have stopped reading posts from "Guest". If they won't take the time to register, I won't take the time to read (much less respond to) the post.

I tend to support this way too, a registration would be good for all who ask a question I feel and anyone who wants to answer as a Guest for some reason, can still of course!!!

Speaking as a person who has frequently "hooked off" on forums where registration was required before you could participate, I have to say I kind a like this set up.

If it means we" and the guest" loose out on the joys of thanking one another, so be it. Free for all otherwise it ends up a small core of hardliners without any new input, in other words yet another little elite friends club.

I think CR4 already gave us some of what we wanted by posting the little list at the top of your new discussion/question page, asking you to do some research first and look up the archives. This way, if a guest does not do that and it shows clearly in the question, we get the pleasure of flaming them.

I tend to agree with 491, I will often ditch a site because I can't be bothered to register but have stayed with a number of sites (including CR4) where I was initially a 'guest' but then registered because I could see it was a good & useful site. I don't think we should make it too difficult for folks to join in, if they like it here they will stay & contribute.

The same applies to manufacturers sites, I will often bypass a site if I am expected to register just to look at their products & take my business elsewhere.

I guess I better reply to this thread or you guys will wonder where I've gone to. You're right of course about the fact that I often don't return to a thread which I've started but you must admit that I have created some interesting threads from time to time that otherwise might have never gotten discussed at all. Some turn out to both interesting and entertaining to all who become involved in it. And sometimes I'll have to admit that my threads lead nowhere and make no sense and would have been better off left unsaid. But you just have to take the good with the bad sometimes. And besides , when my threads are exceptionally bad it gives you all someone to razz and humiliate. As to why I don't register? I could give you a lot of reasons for that but the truth is that the majority of the time it's just due to laziness on my part. Just don't want to take the time to figure out just how to register and do it. No excuse for that but that's the way it is. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the site and it certainly doesn't mean I don't appreciate the info you guys so willingly share with me. I might also add that if I were to register you guys would discover that I,m really not an acutal engineer but just a lowly maintenance man in a small feed mill trying to learn from you guys so that I can do my job better. Sure I have to engineer lots of little jobs here but most are kindergarten stuff to you guys though I take some personel pride in them anyway. And when I'm in over my head it's nice to have you guys to fall back on. Actually, as I think about it ; the main reason I'm answering this thread at all is probably just to say thanks to you all..I have a great deal of respect for most of those who post here regulary. I'm learning some great stuff here. and I enjoy it too. So thanks .

The funny thing is that for years friends have said to me "Charles, quit Boomhowering" as a result of my mumbling and making up of words.

He's not a real engineer but he plays one on TV.

The main issue is that as a guest and we get several guest responses in a thread, that no one knows if it's the same person making each post.

There already seems to be consensus (I always seem to get to the party late!), but my take on it is that you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him sink. The (phony?) post by "Guest" that got my good answer vote said all else needs saying. It DID sound familiar, didn't it?

OBTW, that's Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D'Artagnan, for those whose engineering majors didn't include a smattering of the classics...

Hello Garthh,

"I'm still not sure how we can justify putting a roof on it!"

It really depends on where you live and the climate.

Perhaps the subject could be changed

Y'know, out of curiosity, I used that link, and read some of that stuff - WOW! It's a wonder somebody didn't get killed over that bathtub. Personally, I'd have suggested liquid nitrogen and a small ball peen hammer... Could've chipped off pieces the size of his thumbnail.

What ever happened in the end, any idea?

Well, OK, I took a look at pages 1 AND (not thru) 12, but for all the entertainment value that's there, and yes, I'll go back once in a while to check out some of the Roger of the Raj, T Rex, and other goodies. But is it possible to, in one succinct statement, clarify whether the bloody bath was busted or NOT?!? I don't want to wait until I happen onto the right post coincidentally to find this out. Unless I have to. In which case, AAARRRGGGHHH!

Definition of a masochist: Someone who says "Hurt me, hurt me!"

Definition of a sadist: Someone who replies "No."

I have friends up there and they have several red squirrels visiting their garden and have now "fostered" 2 red youngsters for weaning off people contact so they can be released again in march sometime.

Ahhhh, heart warming.

All we have is the grey ones.... I don't actually shoot them, I generally shoot at them, and with an air gun that wouldn't do more than sting if I actually accidently hit one... And it is really for their own protection... I had a dog that would eat them when he could...better to scare them off.

Hello Garthh,

I have read that saga, and there has been a report made on the journey, by myself.

I must apologise for being stranded on an iceberg over the Christmas holiday period, and the batteries on my GPS ran down, so I did not know which way to row the iceberg to reach land.

Fortunately, a passing passenger albatross settled near me, and after a rather violent tussle, had a message taped to its leg, and was released.

Albatrosses enjoy following ships, an eagle-eyed sailor saw my note, shot the bird, read the contents of my note, and I was bravely rescued, just in time before the fast-melting ice vanished beneath the waves, with myself clutching same.

After a long hot shower, whilst sipping my first whisky for over a month, I narrated the complicated events to the ship's duty hostess, and the wireless operator urgently sent the information to catch the evening Editions.

The tale is told here:

Kind Regards....
