New CR4 code release

01/18/2008 4:59 PM

Hi Folks

I just did a release of the latest CR4 code and here are the highlights:

  • Comments that have been some votes for "good answer", but not enough to "officially" be marked as a good answer are now easier to find. I call these "almost good answers", and hopefully by exposing them in this way the truly good answers will get voted on sufficiently to give the original poster credit.
  • The email notifications that are sent whenever a new Private Mail Message is sent can now be controlled so that fewer are sent (just like we did for the "subscribed discussion" alerts a few months ago). You'll find the controls for this at the bottom of your Edit Profile page.
  • You can now send a Private Mail Message to the owners of a blog. This makes it easier to contact "someone" when you have a question or idea. The new button is on the Blog and Blog entry pages.
  • The CR4 Admins can now disable the Private Mail Message system for any given user. Anyone who attempts to send such a user a PM will be notified that this recipient is not valid. We admins may do this to users who are removed from the site, but we can also do this by request for people who do not want to receive PMs from other CR4 users.
  • The editor that is used to create posts (so, the editor I am typing in right now) has changed a bit... there is now a custom "right-click" menu that allows images already in the post to be manipulated quickly. No new functionality was added though.

So, nothing earth-shattering, but it has been a while since I did a release and I hate sitting on changes for too long.

Thanks
- Mark

Re: New CR4 code release

I had one of those "almost good answers" today and was wondering what was going on. Del the cat had a very good answer the other day and I marked it accordingly. It did not show up as a good answer and I wondered why.

His answer was "Bugger". One word. It was fitting, short, and had an apologetic under tone. Not to mention the humor. It was in more ways than one the proper answer for the recipient who had made a very good point. I can't remember what it was related to but del will know.

What size 'strainer' do you use or is that the wrong word? I would love to at least get one good answer but I know not enough about any thing to have solutions to challenges or problems. I do try. Like many others I'm happy with being the salt in the soup and learning every day. Good stuff CR4. Ky.

We are all dumbing down. I can just about see everybody sitting in front of their computer waiting:

1) to become guru

2) get an "almost good" answer

and yes, I am one of them

I once posted without logging in and got a 'good answer' rating . As Del would say, bugger ! PMSL !

Having never been in the Scouts, I'd like to collect some badges of honour now to make up for it. Unfortunately, like Ky, I don't have the in-depth knowledge that many do.. Even without specialist knowledge, it's always possible to dig up obscure information for people. It sort of makes up for tapping other peoples knowledge. Think I'll go and give Ky a point for that nice honest post he made. Posts like his make the CR4 community a friendly community.

Re: New CR4 code release

"...editor that is used to create posts..." is a wee bit misnomer, but as we all agree...no beef.

But I do think adding some simple, basic proof-ing functionality would provide a useful editing tool, if it could be done. In particular the ability to add "'strikeout" attributes to text would be nice; better still if redline attributes as well.

I have seen strikeout functionality on other sites and they can be very helpful and time savers, for example:

  • To copy and repost with error corrections.
  • To quickly, noticeably, and gently clarify quoted passages in expedient fashion
  • To assist non-English (and quasi-English) speakers who appear to be having difficulty and ask or seem to ask for assistance
  • To posit quoted questions/assertions in restated form before posting answer.
  • For acknowledging errors pointed out by others.
  • As a shorthand way for narrowing down multiple meanings (possible conflicting interpretations) by showing unintended meanings with strikeouts...
  • And so on.

Probably such a feature would not be used frequently (by the group in general), but for that matter, neither is the Omega feature used all that much.

On one site I saw where the strikeout feature is available, one opens a small input box using an "edit" bar icon and then keys in the words meant to have strikeout attributes--or one highlights existing text and pastes it in the box. When the box is closed, the strikeout text appears at the current pointer position in the message being "processed"; or the selected, existing text reappears with strikeouts.

Redlining doesn't appear as feasible since font color is not provided--but some other character to mark revised text might be a suitable substitute...or even surrounding braces, or a character at line end to show where to look for an edit insertion. Functionality could be much the same as strikeouts--or even "automated" to open a redlined text insertion box in conjunction with the closing of a strikeout box (where, upon closing of the redline box, the inserted text would self paste just after the struckout text without mouse handling).

Or the Room could be code modified to permit posting of text with proofing attributes from a word processor without removing the strikeout attributes. This would be a bit more cumbersome.

That's it. Just a suggestion.

Could I suggest a minor addition to the improvements?

I reported some time ago that I got a PM from inappropriate members advertising or asking for money (you know the Nigerian scam).

Could I ask to be updated about any progress or action taken? I have not heard anything after my reporting.

Many thanks,

I too, have a similar question/request. Awhile back, there was a poster using the name "Anthracritic" (sp?) that was doing nothing but namecalling, criticizing (big surprise given the name huh?), and in general being nasty. After I made a couple of replies asking for a bit of a tone-down, and to please play nicer, and getting only worse back, I hit the "report" button and made my case to the great faceless voice of authority to investigate.

The only information I ever got in reply was that said poster's posts all disappeared, and no such name now appears on the membership roster. Well, I can guess what happened in this particular case, but it's still only guessing. Can it possibly be arranged so that when official actions are taken, mention can be made of them? I'm only using this as an example, I include any necessary activities over and above routine maintenance.

Did you put your viewpoint in the recent Blog where it was put forward that guests could not ask questions/start a Blog? I did and I was completely out numbered......

All that Omni Guest here is doing is "adding a comment"......

I have to say that I really pay little attention to answers from guests, their answers simply do not interest me, as if they are not "Brave" enough to stand up and be counted.....why should I care about them?

......we cannot tell one guest apart from another either......

.....I have no problem in "having" guest posting, as not having it might mean fewer posters that eventually enjoy CR4 and become full members......I became a member in that way myself!

I am also not interested in hearing from anyone that I should change my attitude on this point either....sorry!

The Gura said: "...I really [sic] pay little [emphasis added] attention to answers from guests, their answers simply do not interest me, [...] if they are not "Brave" enough to stand up and be counted.....why should I care about them?"

Dear Andy, et al:

Your answer belies a different truth, in that you took such pains to retort in respect of a "Guest" statement not directed to you; but, to your dubious credit, did so (likewise) having read but not fully comprehended either, the content or the spirit of the supposedly offending message or messages.

In the face of such heartfelt and Teutonic insistence, it is now clear that it would be foolhardy now for me to post as promised under registered name; your remarks make it equally clear that, valid or not, you have no interest in what might have been said (by guest or otherwise); which leaves no choice but for me to respectfully withdraw the promise to post, in accordance with your wishes and in deference to your august position of seniority... [ ]

To Enviroman (#16 post) and others who might have been interested...there is really no harm done.... To any thinking person this "discussion" thread has made it obvious enough--this without any of the finer justifications I had intended to offer--why it is that the decision to publish "official actions" would be "both impractical and not likely to happen." For this, a measure of gratitude is owed to the interlopers.

Going back to your #44 ; If somebody is really out of line, Admin will probably block their IP address. If comment is reported, and upheld as outside CR4 rules, it will get deleted along with posts that refer to it (which must be a pain in the butt for Admin).

When somebody is barred, I don't really see any value in announcing it - the fact becomes self-evident. If somebody gets a slap on the wrists for being naughty, there is not much benefit in a 'name and shame policy'. I've no idea if temporary exclusions are used. At the end of the day Admin are called Admin because thats what they do, for the benefit of the community. It's better to let them handle such matters so we can all get along with whatever we are here for.

My only annoyance with Guests ( there is another thread on all this), is that it can be confusing as to which one is which.

Just my 2 cents of opinion.

Thanks for the additions Mark. I only just noticed your update, and had been puzzled about how the editor was acting this morning.

Often I've right clicked a web image and used 'cut', but upon attempting paste in editor it asked if it could use my clip-board. Saying 'yes' disabled several of the function icons. (Going left to right, 1,2,3,4,5,11,12). I'll have to play with it a bit to get the hang of things.

Re: New CR4 code release

There are security issues with cut & paste. You can get the original right-click menu by selecting "Bypass custom menu". In Windows you can always use ctrl-C to copy, ctrl-V to paste, and ctrl-X to cut. (Refer to the browser's Edit menu for the keyboard shortcuts.)

I decided that the right-click menu was worth the cut & paste hassle because there are some editor features (not yet felly implemented though) that will be greatly simplified by having that kind of menu.

Thanks
- Mark

Many thanks Mark. I've recently taken to using Ctrl + Print Screen, then edit stuff in 'Paint' in order to capture an image. It depends how cavalier I'm feeling.

It's a question of how manySquirrels is equal to 1 Wolf. I reckon if the match was based on total body mass, it could balance as a draw. Possibly.

Either that, or we'd double the mass of the wolf... BTW, carny squirrels are not news, they've been raiding bird nests and other squirrel nests (CANNIBALISM! EGAD!) forever. But if the skwirrel had our 2nd Amendment rights, that'd be a skwirrel of a different color! (but still red, apparently)

LOL. It would be a close run thing. White-Fang my eye ! 100's of little rodent incisors might bluff him off, but there would probably be a lot of 'Claret' spilt. The Skiwrrel in the link appears to like his meat cooked. Clearly a discerning chap.

I've a feeling Mark might be the one to fear if we keep going off-topic on his thread. I'm doing a runner before it occurs. We be turning his serious and informative thread into one of the jokey ones. Catch ya laters !

Have you fixed any of the "Bugs" that are in the posting editor? For example, when a line has a "Smiley" in it and you do a CR LF, a line is inserted above the line with the Smiley.....very strange.

Sometimes the cursor becomes invisible too....

This is peculiar as I also noticed it but only after I converted to Mozilla Firefox.

You don't happen to use Firefox do you?

It was ok before that with that stupid IE7, maybe we are all wrong and windows is the best thing since sliced bread.......nahhh, can't be

Do you mean that CR4 is not Firefox compatible? I would hate to have to use IE again, perhaps you can recommend something else that works instead of FF or IE?

Re: New CR4 code release

firefox is the best by far and the problem only sometimes happens, don't know why.

I put a smiley on and after a return the cursor disappeared but returned as soon as I started typing again.

Strange

And again here! Oh, just noticed it put an extra empty line in above, you see that? And it also has a large stationairy cursor?????? Which has gone now?????????

Mum, I am scared.

I think it has to do with the firefox spell checker myself. I will have a go and see if I can switch that off.

Hi Andy,

"Sometimes the cursor becomes invisible too...."

I've noticed that too, but only when using Mozilla Firefox (as Case has pointed out).

If I'm just reading posts, I'll usually use Firefox (because it's faster than IE7), but if I want to post a reply I'll switch over to IE7 to do it.

Check your operating, mouse, and/or browser settings. If you speak of cursor and not pointer, that default is usually for the location cursor to remain unseen when not in motion. This increases visibility of text. This happen when the cursor is in a "read" box. If in a posting (edit) box the cursor will usually remain visible, and flashing when not in motion.

That's the problem Guest! The cursor disappears when editing text (usually after inserting an emoticon). Who would want the cursor visible in a "read" box anyway? As stated earlier this seems to be a Firefox problem. I've never seen it happen with IE7.

Thanks for the clarification. Since I don't have Firefox and can't see what you see with it, consider my mouth closed, except... When you refer to cursor, is there any chance you mean the pointer? Just curious...because I noticed that in IE, the pointer will reappear in the text entry (evidently it "runs" again) after a wait period in which cursor is not moved and no text is keyed. I also noticed that the cursor can be (or at least seem) more unstable when running in a Web window or when multiple Web windows are open; I considered this a minor nuisance that one must learn to overlook. Again, thanks.

Ok I tried switching the spell checker and the auto scrolling off and restarted firefox. this is just a test, don't be alarmed.

But unfortunately the cursor just dissapeared again only to return when I started typing.

Shame.

Now it doubled up on my return command and kept showing the cursor, I also noticed that the double line feed in the previous post was not visible in the preview or the real posting, only in my editor window.

Somebody mucked up our CR4, if we find him he will pay for it.

I've found that when the cursor disappears (w/ Firefox) after inserting an emoticon, if I go to "preview comment" then go back to "edit comment", the cursor is back to normal. Most aggravating!

Just type something and it will come back too, this is faster than previewing.

Either way it is rotten as you have no clue where it is unless you have kept a close eye on what you were up to. Sometimes you come back from the doorbel or the phone and you have no idea what you were doing just then. It is at those moments I need to restrain myself from putting a brick through the monitor.

Ok it is all over now, calm down and have another beer. Aahhhh , that's beter.

Doesn't matter as it is not the problem. The cursor anomalies still work their little evil in either setup.

LMAO - I just skimmed over it, then posted because it seemed relevant. I agree, you'd have to spend ages to be 'hacker proof' and even then you ain't gonna be 100% certain. Easier just to pay for some good protection. Even having to occasionally defrag pisses me off. Hours must get wasted by us all doing none-useful stuff on computers. On top of that annoyance, I only use 1% of the software features I am compelled to buy from microshite.

It's a good point, but I'd still loose sleep. It annoys me that the damn thing has to defrag at all ! Computers are like naughty kids who won't put one toy back in it's right place before picking up the next.

All the lousy weather is putting me in a bad mood, so I'm going to take it out on computers ! What's the saying..."Can't live with them, can't live without them".

Yes AG I have noticed this too. I will insert a <space> after the 'smiley' before keying <enter> and this works. I have more frustration with the italics though.

I would like to see that when I post a comment to a thread I am subscribed by default.

I would also like to see the 'no more comments' prompt double function as 'mark all comments as read' or something to that effect as I find it a bit more cumbersome than pleasurable to mark all as read once finished.

I would also like a Big Wheel, the StarWars Lego DeathStar, a puppy named Floppy, and an Official Red Rider BB gun.

Can I can I can I pleeeez can I!

cr3

PS; Andy, Case I too am a firefox user and this certainly seems to be a Mozilla issue. It is one I will tolerate as opposed to using IE7!

Both IE and Firefox exhibit their own flavors of weirdness. Most of the behavior of the editor is controlled directly by the browser itself, and I can try to fix/fight it, but in some cases that way lies madness. So, if you feel strongly about a particular issue the I suggest to you (and everyone else posting bugs to this thread) to post a separate thread for each issue to the CR4 Feedback forum. (A smart person would post only the most serious problems first... the squeaky wheel does not always get what it would like.)

Thanks

Hi

I was able to reproduce both of these bugs in FF and I have something that should address them. I'll release it (quietly) later today.

Thanks
- Mark

Here is my real bugbear.

When you have replied to a post but you know there are other posts you need to read as well, you can only submit the reply first and go through the preview and all that before you can reselect the thread and read the other posts.

What about 2 submit buttons, one that puts you to your lists of subscribed threads and one that offers to put you back to the last post you were reading?

Now that would be a big thumbs up from me if you did that. It would also make the forementioned problem of "mark all comments as read" a thing of the past as you could now do this before going back to your list.

Mark,

I still think you need a way to counter the "good answer" ratings when it is believed to be a bad answer instead.

If you do not like a "good answer" then rate it and say you disagree... that will decrease the "score" and if enough people do it then the "good answer" rating will go away.

Thanks
- Mark

Cool, I tried that on KY's post above and it worked. How come it reduced his score from 5 to 3 instead of from 5 to 4? Are not good answer votes weighted higher than good answer votes?

"Are not good answer votes weighted higher than good answer votes?"

Choice #1 - There's a typo in the fuel supply here.

Choice #2 - Height has a weight and/or weight has a height, neither of which had I been made aware of.

Choice #3 - Boy, did I miss the point! (NOT an impossibility...)

Maybe somebodyelse had done the same, at the same time as you ? It was a bit tight of you doing that Steve ! (Kinda funny though )

I can't see any reason for weighting answers. All opinion should have equal merit/value. With the large membership CR4 has, things should eventually reflect majority opinion.

Come now Kris,

My friend KY had 5 votes, so I didn't think it would hurt anything, and I wanted to try it out somewhere....

I was the first to give him a good answer vote. It may be that when I voted it a bad answer that the program recinded my original good answer, and then took another.

Wonder what would happen if you tried to give it back?

Tee hee, just joshing with y'all. I often experiment to find out how features work. It's a laugh to see the responce if you try and give yourself a 'good' rating. I haven't yet tried the repeatedly changing my mind thing. Just for laughs, I've even given myself a 'bad' rating in places !

I'm sure Ky saw the funny side, and trying things out is the best way to figure how they work.

I gave it back to him and the message said my previous vote was replaced with this one, so Ky is back to 5!
