New CR4 code release

01/18/2008 4:59 PM

Hi Folks

I just did a release of the latest CR4 code and here are the highlights:

  • Comments that have been some votes for "good answer", but not enough to "officially" be marked as a good answer are now easier to find. I call these "almost good answers", and hopefully by exposing them in this way the truly good answers will get voted on sufficiently to give the original poster credit.
  • The email notifications that are sent whenever a new Private Mail Message is sent can now be controlled so that fewer are sent (just like we did for the "subscribed discussion" alerts a few months ago). You'll find the controls for this at the bottom of your Edit Profile page.
  • You can now send a Private Mail Message to the owners of a blog. This makes it easier to contact "someone" when you have a question or idea. The new button is on the Blog and Blog entry pages.
  • The CR4 Admins can now disable the Private Mail Message system for any given user. Anyone who attempts to send such a user a PM will be notified that this recipient is not valid. We admins may do this to users who are removed from the site, but we can also do this by request for people who do not want to receive PMs from other CR4 users.
  • The editor that is used to create posts (so, the editor I am typing in right now) has changed a bit... there is now a custom "right-click" menu that allows images already in the post to be manipulated quickly. No new functionality was added though.

So, nothing earth-shattering, but it has been a while since I did a release and I hate sitting on changes for too long.

Thanks
- Mark

Nope, I went back and voted it a bad answer and his good answer score went from 6 to 5... Then I came back and it was 3??

Just keep coming mate. Chisel away. I am so used to being the victim of erroneous maths that this experiment will not make a big difference. I believe your president was elected in a very similar way. In the end the Truth will set me free. Maybe us all.

By the way Steve, "Clavi" was declared dead on arrival. Meltdown kind of stuff. Insurance will do some nit picking and reduce my hard earned points as well. So just keep coming. Pain? On a scale from 1-10? 1/2. I feel nussing at all. Ky.

You see, now I am a guest for not doing the right thing. And I noticed that a guest can't edit their replies. I wonder what would happen if you would try to gave me a good answer point for my reply. Would a guest have a first good answer? You could always take it away in the end. Ky.

I don't know what difference it made, nor precisely what the outcome was, but I have rated Guest posts as good answers...

Oversight on my side. Only follow the ratings since I found that I had one answer just not good enough. My second name is "jumpingtoconclusions" and is a bad and some times embarrassing part of my personality. Hope the under rated (they are occasionally picked on) Guests have mercy with us and are not stalled or hindered in their hunt for supremacy. But then, would they really care? Ky.

Ah, KY, your middle name is the same as my favorite sport - if it ever becomes an Olympic event, I hope to medal (meddle?) in it! Actually, that's about all the exercise I get these days...

Re: New CR4 code release

....Not at all. I even did this myself to myself ! I had a nice thumbs up, and then demoted myself for a giggle (even funnier it was a thread about guest postings, and I was posting as 'Kris'). Not sure if this makes me an ego-maniac, or just obnoxiously smug. Maybe I'm just twisted/demented/<insert as desired>/ etc . I have a thumbs up as 'Guest' somewhere but anybody reading that thread will know it's me and the reasons why ( It's too embarrassing to repeat.)

Is there a box to check for "all of the above"?

The only problem with highlighting almost good answers, is that it is now obvious that I have a whole bunch of almost good answers, sitting out there all lonely and orphaned, just waiting for some friendly person to come by an mercifully promote them to fully good answers... I think right now I have about six such orphaned almost good answers in threads no one is reading anymore....

Yeah, well I've got about 570 answers that aren't even almost good, they're just mediocre, I guess. So your complaint would be...? Oh, oh, here's where a reply from Joe Pesci's "Leo" in the Lethal Weapon movies would be just SO good!

Yeah, yeah, I've got a fat lip, somebody stole my wallet, and I'm standing up to my knees in pig crap, and YOU'VE got a effing problem! I got yer problem, right here!

Sometimes I even crack myself up...!

Re: New CR4 code release

01/21/2008 1:53 PM

...it was the lonely posts with only one "Good Answer" vote that made me want to try out this "almost good answer" idea. All I can say is that I think that being an "almost good answer" will make it more likely that other people will read your comment, and that's better than if they didn't. I do think that more people reading a good comment will lead to more people voting for it, but getting the "good answer" credit you deserve isn't the primary goal of the GA system anyway... the main goal is to highlight the good stuff.

Thanks
- Mark

But competative people don't see it that way! (I agree that it does give it visibility, I was kidding above).

OK, here's one that just struck me. I often get around to the "New Stories" alert way late due to the fact that I do work. Way down at the bottom, there's a message that reads:

Interested in this discussion?
You can "subscribe" to this discussion to be notified of new comments.

Click on the Subscribe menu at the top of the page. Why can't there be a duplicate (or even the only) 'subscribe' button at the bottom of the page where I have read down to by then, instead of having to go all the way (yeah, I know, what a chore, right?!?) back up to the top? Just a thought, thanks.

Using that 'Back to the top' button is a real bummer.

What?!? There's a back to the top button? Who knew... Sheesh, it's not like me to fail to observe these things, guess I never did scroll ALL the way down to the bottom, then.

Earlier vermin pointed out an error(?) in the CR4 logo (service mark). When I read your post I took a look at it and it appears that Mark has corrected it. Shame. We need little things like that to keep us on our toes.

Hey Mark, how bout another hidden treasure for us ordinary folk, unlike those such as the furry one, to search for?

Yeah, right ! On the few occasions I read fiction, I can never resist reading the last few pages first. Now look what you made me do - I'd said I wasn't going to do any more off topics on Marks thread.

Somewhere, Mark detailed keyboard shortcuts to hop around CR4 ( hopefully that may get me out of the mire).

I had thought the "Custom Menu" Problem was caused by an update of Firefox Browser.
