What kind of junk mail do you get?

01/27/2008 6:51 PM

Just wondering whether my distribution is normal ! (figures are very approximate).

80% get a bigger penis *

15% get fake watches etc.

3% phishing

2% other random junk

* has someone noticed, and is really trying to help?

I gotta say I'm envious. Most of my junk mail is from the bookstore, the pet supply co., and AARP. Would you believe boring? Well, would you believe pathetic? How do I get my name on one of those enlargement lists? Although as long as I'm only daydreaming, wouldn't it be great to get spam saying "The ladies in your town have complained about your size and want you to try this new reducing drug."

Nigerian scams, join gay/lesbian/bisexual/infidelity websites, ads for Xanax/Viagra/other what-have-you meds, counterfeit printer ink, junk bonds, the usual crap. I don't even know what percentage of what I actually get because I simply delete them all away unopened, well, except maybe for the join lesbian sites. Like most straight men, I find there's something very appealing about two gorgeous girls making out with each other. Maybe that's why I ended going over to the Dark Side.

Hey, I'm not getting any of that lot! As it's a company laptop, it may be something to do with firewall settings.

Trouble is, I haven't got todays CR4 stories either and it's nearly tomorrow!

I get about that number John.... plus maybe 10% stock broker tips - i.e. they want you to create interest in some stock so the price rises and they can sell at a profit...

Ohh plus all the Viagra, larger size, surprise your wife, etc...

As for the phishing attempts, they really are laughable most of them, I mean do I have an account with Citi-bank or bank of America etc...

Mind you there are some really good attempts for ebay and Paypal etc...

John.

It depends upon whether personal messages from Del the Cat, Kris, vermin, masu and so-on fall into that category....

If less than 20 come in each day, then there's something wrong!

I think that your junk mail reflects on how you spend your time surfing the WEB.

80% I hope your not that insecure?

I spend about 80% of my 'web-time' right here at CR4 - so what does that say ?

Maybe there legions of web-bots trawling through all our posts, looking for who they could best sucker for a fake Gucci handbag, a pair of genuine alligator lederhosen, (or even, in my diminutive case, a bigger knob ).

Then again, maybe not web-bots. maybe it's YOU! I know about you guys. I've read all about this double-bluff stuff in Books, and things.

I use MailwasherPro first to ensure unwanted emails never get downloaded to my system.

I use Pegasus Email as an email Client.

Both the above were developed right here, in New Zealand.

That way I minimise my exposure to unwanted emails.

Kind Regards....

I use Outlook with BT/Yahoo at the front end. About 1 in 200 junk mails get through to my inbox, and 1 in 500 of genuine mails are mis-identified as junk. It only ever happens once from any sender - I allow or bar messages from the sender when I spot the error.

I clear the junk folder at least once a day (sometimes 4 or 5 times), just to make sure I haven't missed anything important.
