Project List?!

02/17/2008 5:21 AM

We keep getting the same question.. 'What can I do for my electronic/mecanical blah blah project?'

Maybe there should be an easilly accessible list/section/blog that these can be directed to? We could contribute new ideas.
People working on the various projects could communicate/cooperate with eachother.
Any people with special community projects/ worthy causes etc, could post asking for help...

There's gotta be some potential there for useful projects rather than endless re-invention of the whatever...

What do you guys think?

Del

Hello Del the cat

Jolly good idea.

Whatevers seem to be getting re-invented at regular intervals.

Kind Regards....

Hi, Del,

Ideas of this sort (or vaguely similar) crop up like the re-inventions you're talking about (see e.g. http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/13709/New-Web-Based-Encyclopedia)

Nothing has happened to date.

Maybe your concept of a project list will take off?

John

Hello JohnDG

But will the takeoff be vertical or horizontal?

That's the question.

Kind Regards....

Are these projects related to final year (or whatever year) projects? Those are the ones that I've noticed we've been getting a lot of. Personally, I think we should not encourage these types of questions. Kids nowadays expect things to be handed to them without any effort on their part.

If it's for a community project or worthy cause, then by all means, I'm all for it. I'm not sure what I can contribute but if something comes up, I'll gladly share it.

What about a separate section for Projects instead? The DIY blog has some interesting threads there. Maybe we could do the same?

I certainly take your point Vulc'...

I'm not thinking giving too much help (although we are a very helpful group) more just a list of loose project ideas which may provide inspiration.
Maybe including some specific projects where there is a real need.

Mind, having said that, the internet is a legitimate research tool these days. It's treading that fine line between 'help and information' rather than 'doing it for them'.
I mean we all read manufacturers app' notes?

Yeah, it's so hard to know what they already know, what skills they have, what facilities are available. A forum where they can help one another, guided by OFs, would be great.

There are countless books and such. It really strikes me as sloth. I try and be compassionate but the idea is to generate one own mental faculties. I have no problem with a spur or affirmation of an idea- like the 15 yr old girl recently. But asking for an idea from scratch seems a bit much.

How about some one generate an algorithm for creating new ideas?

That's a real problem and one I think we OFs can't just ignore. I suspect most of us, by the time we were 12 or 15, had blown up several things, set fire to the shop, short-circuited the mains, and disassembled several things we had no chance of ever reassembling. Many students now have no such hands-on experiences to guide them, partly because of the passive (i.e. tv and internet) learning methods and partly because parents now do so many things for/with them, insisting on safety ("No, you can't put a cylinder of propane in the fire!").

Yeah, the young girl really was on the ball. I hope she goes into engineering - she'll be a good one!

BTW, that might make a great thread - what's the dumbest, more informative thing you did as a youngster, but I suspect the statute of limitations may not be up on some of them.

Funny you should say that...I posted this thread a while back.

I agree totally...I bet the kids don't do much wood work/metalwork in school and don't do the fun experiments in physics/chemistry.

No Johnny you can't sharpen your pencil, you havn't got your safety glasses and full body armour on.

In the early 70s, I taught a lab section of a physical science summer course for elementary science teachers, and they had to all do a "show and tell" demonstration. One, who was in the Army Reserves, brought a Huey gunship. I can't imagine anybody being allowed to do anything remotely close to that now.

Interestingly in the US, most of us OFs went to school when they taught shop classes (metalworking, electrical, etc). That is a thing of the past and a big loss to skill-building. My 1st daughter was A-1 in woodworking. They stopped the classes by the time the second daughter went through (3 yrs later).

Re: Project List?!

People working on the various projects could communicate/cooperate with each other.

Great idea Del. There are a few problems though. Confidentiality would be one. At least the projects I am involved with are held close to the chest. The problems or hiccups are that minute, that solving them would require insight to the whole "blah blah project".

So I try and solve end stadium glitches myself and some times CR4 has helped greatly. With out any one knowing what the question was aimed at. Only so much can be given away with out running the danger of giving an IP away.

By the way, the private email communications at CR4 have helped me to get in contact with one of the participants of this site and his assistance in the matter was more than helpful. It did take a full study of the project for him to be able to help but he did so in the most generous way. We have become friends in some way with out having ever met.

By evaluating his replies to questions he could only be a very honest man. Thanks again if you read this Mate.

Another difficulty would be to choose the "blah blah project". Which is the most promising? Regarding any engineering discipline? Would it include managerial advice?

See were this one goes. Good idea. Ky.

I feel this bit would be up to the individuals involved... Much the same as it is with us guys...
If you don't want to give away your IP...don't post it.

The 'projects' as I see it would be just loose ideas, rather than fine detail...
More an 'Ideas for potential projects list'

Hi Del,

I personally feel that it's a good idea may be to pool in our ideas to create a project bank. From my experience, I think an engineering graduate in his final year or when he passes out is quite raw with great ambitions, but no experience. Whatever taught in the classes is generally basic and will realize that what is found in the world outside is much advanced. I guess most of the students and the colleges consider the project work as just a formality for completing the engineering course.

There may be a few students genuinely interested in working on any interesting projects by devoting their precious time, but have no idea what can be a useful project because of lack of experience and exposure. To these students, the project bank may be useful. Ideas can be very simple with/without much details. Let the student use his brains to work further on the idea and while working, he/she can come to the forum for help. Who knows, some of these ideas may lead to new inventions..... If required, the person who has contributed the idea can claim credit or royalty for the same !!!
