My 14th Birthday

02/28/2008 7:50 PM

So today is my 14th birthday. In four years, I'll be the same age as Small. She is at primary school, & I'm over the hill.

A) How old am I?

B) How old is Small?

Given about 12.5 thousand CR4 members, age range (say) 16 - 80, I reckon there must be over 100 other members out there sharing my day (not necessarily my age).

I have a Jamaican friend, 4 years older than me to the day, who has insisted (for the last 16 years) that he will take me to Kingston for a big birthday rave. Would be nice if he got it together for 2012 - reckon I'll need a couple of weeks respite from the Olympics hype/debacle by then.

My second name is David; any other year, I'd've been born on St. David's Day.

Most years I manage to spend the entire duration of my birthday (a bit before, and a bit after, and all the time in between) drinking. This is one of those 1-in-4 more challenging years - I really have to work at it!

Many Happy Returns, all other Leapers,

John.

Firstly, happy bday John!!

A) 14 x 4 = 56

B) 15 - 4 = 11? (quite hard... :S)

Hello JohnDG

29th February 1952 should be when you first "saw the light of day".

A person born on February 29 may be called a "leapling". In common years they usually celebrate their birthdays on 28 February or 1 March.

For those who are puzzled, or cannot remember, look for the explanation and ruleset here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_year

Please add the requisite number of candles to your cake.

Kind Regards....

Hello StandardsGuy

If it is also your birthday on 29th February, I shall order another from the CR4 Bakery, and place it here for you.

Kind Regards....

No, it isn't, but you are tempting me with that luscious cake!

By the way, happy birthday John. Here is more for the party:

At least John, unlike me, doesn't need to have a fire permit to light the candles on his birthday cake.

Hi, SparkY, thanks for the cake. Not sure what to do with these, though.

Edit: They're not Cubist candles are they?

Two possible situations:

1)You have published this puzzle on Feb 28, at 6:50PM. That means that you are 14 year old and, one can say, a presumptuous youngster.

2)You had in mind to publish it on Feb 29, the day you were born. In this case, if today (Feb 29, 2008) you celebrate your 14th birthday, you are born in 1948 and we can say that you are, approximately, 60 year old. Don't tell us that you have had a birthday in 2000!

So, in 2012, when you will celebrate the 15th birthday and your daughter her normal 15th, she is, now, 11 years old.

Something tells me that you miscalculated your birthdays, that you considered the 2000 a leap year and, in this case, this would be your 13th birthday and the age of your daughter would be 10.

Another reason to hate California It is possible that the server for this forum is somewhere in California, and it stamps their time, PST, which is 8 hours behind.

How about your birth year? Was it 1948 or 1952?

Good night, I am going to sleep now.

Nick

Re: My 14th Birthday

It was indeed '52.

2000 was a leap year, being divisible by 400.

CR4 calculates your local time & date. For instance, I'm replying to your post (stamped 8:05am on 29th) at 8:15 GMT ('my' time).

Sleep well, John.

Re: My 14th Birthday

It was February of 2000, at a good university, in the lounge of Physics department, having lunch. Two Physics professors were discussing that this year there will not be a leap year, because of the double 0. I didn't know about that ruling and I was glad that I have learnt something new. Of coarse, I didn't notice the existence of February 29 in that year, but it was buried in my memory the discussion. As it happens, a few days ago I have stated this rule to my step son with, of coarse, a very doct, on three lower octaves, tone.

When you have mentioned that birthday, I jumped the horse.

Now this is my Canossa....

Hi John - happy now and then day.

Over the hill at 60 - No chance, but it is getting steeper especially with a teenage she (11 is manageable).

You are officially allowed by CR4 to choose any other day (Except 1st April)

Happy birthday, John. I envy you having one birthday for every four of mine. But I have started using the hexadecimal system to report my age. My current age is 4A. Will be 4B in May. It will be a while before I am 50.

All the best on this special day.

Re: My 14th Birthday

Well, that's it for another 4 years.

Thanks to all for making it a good day. I awoke at 6:30, and threw up. Got Small up, dressed & fed (well, she did most of it herself!) and got her to school. Came back & spent a while here, then went back to sleep 'til 2:15. Then 2 hrs with accountant (who isn't all bad - at least he's on my side even if it does cost me a couple of limbs).

Managed to force down a couple of pints in the evening (that shows how bad I was!). Didn't eat all day.

I had some nice cards, texts from people I'd forgotten, an answering machine rendering of "happy birthday" from an old folkie I haven't seen for years & a good chat on the phone with my brother in Devon.

Together with the goings-on at CR4, managed a pretty good day out of what could've been a disaster. Thanks again, all.

John.

Only a couple of pints..... My Gawd... you must have been feeling bad....

Mind you if it was only a couple of pints of very strong real ale (7% or more) then two isn't bad going

John
