Connecting Capacitor Bank to 3-Phase (440 volt) Motor

03/04/2008 4:24 AM

Hello sir

We have some 75 HP capacity motors. we have decided to connect capacitor bank to motor. so i ask to friend how make connection some friends say that connect three phase capacitor bank in delta contactor some friends say connect in main contactor so i am confused so please guide me.

we are also installed automatic power factor controller unit.

thank you

"we have decided to connect capacitor bank to motor" - Why?

The principle behind the capacitor bank is power factor correction.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_factor_correction

If an automatic power factor controller has been installed then its accompanying information should give details of the connections to be made to the capacitors and the sizing of the banks. Follow the original equipment manufacturer's instructions!

Hello Nishant

Your message is not clear as to what you are intending.

I am thinking that:

  1. You have several 75HP 3 phase motors.
  2. you have purchased a capacitor Bank.
  3. You have installed an automatic Power Factor Unit.
  4. You want to know how to connect the item (2) and (3) to your existing electrical system.

If the above translation of your Post is correct, please advise.

Could you reply here, and advise exactly what you intend, with

Kind Regards....

Hello sir,

just we decided to reduce power factor so we goes for installed capacitor bank. so how connect capacitor bank in motor connection.

Thank you

Hi

Do u have generator set installed at your plant, whenever thr DG set is running you cant make on the capacitor bank ON because it may damage the alternator of DG set.

While connecting the capacitor bank take care that whenever u make o DG set you capacitor bank grt tripped.

I am going to install capacitor bank across 50, 40, 30 HP motor. I think , Best way is to take a contactor (3Ph) which is connected to the 3 Ph capacitor bank, in such a way that whenever your motor get on your capacitor bank get ON.

We have already connected capacitor bank of 50KVA.

initially you must assign the power factor of the motor ,

the KVA drawn from your motor which is = 75*0.746 divided on the power factor ( say 0.8 ) = 70 KVA

then what is the needed KVAR = KVA*(1-cos f + = 70*(1-0.8) = 140 KVAR

you want now 140 KVAR then your choic to the voltage much be high than 440 volt , =480 volt

so you have 2 option :

1- to buy some units each of them is 3 phase ( R S T ) and there are internal and to be connected directly in parallel with the 3 phases source ( rated voltage will be 480 volt )

2- there are some capcitors single phase is to be connected with the source delta or star according to its rated voltage , if its rated voltage more than 440 volt to be connected delta , if its rated voltage is lower than 440 volt to be connected star

in each time the KVAR is to calculated by different formula

Regards

becouse balance power factor & reduce of power losses .

do not connect capacitor bank motor connection side other wise connect capacitor bank SFU out put side after than connect cable motor contactor input side.

If you already have bulk automatic PF control in the plant, I highly suggest that you DO NOT connect additional at-load PFC capacitors! You set yourself up for severe risk of capacitor resonance and damage to the caps as well as voltage spikes that could damage other equipment in the plant.

Dear Mr. NISHANT,

Connect the capacitor in such a way that when motor comes to DELTA after startinfg, the capacitor will be in parallel to the motor and when the motor trips, the capacitor should be automatically disconnected.
