Turbine Animation

03/14/2008 2:26 PM

I am a Hydro Electric Station Operator. I am looking for an animation of a rotating Francis Turbine. The turbine would look like the one pictured below. Is there anyone of you that would know where I might obtain this?

Thank you

Look around your area for an drafting service that does 3D models using Inventor or Solid Works. Then look for someone who does animation.

If you were closer to Tulsa, I'd recommend the outfit I work for, because we can do the both the model and the animation. Check us out at www.startraining.com.

As we both know you can't see the turbine spin up or down because it is submerged in water and the generator is concealed behind metal plates that direct the cooling air.

So if you had a camera in the water passage looking thru the open wicket gates while other personnel rotated the gen-turbine assembly by hand, breakaway is difficult with large rotors, but some of these units also have a high lift lube oil pumping system to lift the thrust bearing and allow one hand rotation. In lieu of going into the water passage to make the video, you may take a camcorder and walk around the runner, or inside the scrollcase with the wicket gates open.

So video of the turbine runner and also video the generator rotor in motion and then take this video and digitize it using a "Pinnacle" "Nero" or "Sony" videomaker software, then take the frames and put them together as desired using "Photo Impression" to modify, label, color parts of the frame, etc. and then put these back into sequence along with explanatory frames. Then use the Pinnacle or Sony or MS Moviemaker software to create a video sequence, add descriptive audio clips, music, turbine or generator sounds, breaker closing, loading the turbine and generator in parallel with the video.

If you want the websites for these softwares:

www.mindworkshop.com has image processing and video making software

www.sony.com/mediasoftware/ has image and audio capture, processing, and moviemaking software

www.nero.com has image capture, processing and moviemaking software

www.pinnaclesys.com has image and audio capture, processing and moviemaking software

MS Moviemaker is bundled in the media software.

There are also small business videographers with high quality cameras, software, and finesse who can make this project for you.

Creating an animation from still images is also a possibility.

Usually your budget determines what can be done.

Thank you for your interest in my dilemma. Our units do not have high lift pumps for the thrust bearing. Disassembly of the rotor is OUT of the question. The unit total rotating weight is about 90 ton. I am still looking. Thanks again.

Below is a picture of our station. We have six units that produce 10.3 MW's each.

We are not huge, but it is Hydro!! Thanks again.

I doubt if there can be a better animation. it actually breaks it apart part by part highlighting all operations.Txs.

The cheap way would be to download a free GIF animator.

You would then further need 3 more photos each advancing 1/4 of a gap turn.

By continues cycling through the 4 photos your rotation will be animated.

Mindworkshop.com has the GIF animators and they are doing constant development to improve the software, I know it works as I have used it for over 5 years, so I recommended it.

Whoops.

Sorry to see that I have just posted a link that was already in the thread. Sorry to all.

What would be nice is someone telling how we can download this clip from YouTube so as to have it always on our hard drives. Anybody know how?

If you are able to download the 3 Gorges video and take it into Moviemaker and insert the descriptive slides and the sounds then you will have something.

You may wish to contact the Bureau of Reclamation and the Tennessee Valley Authority who both operate large hydro's in the US, to see if they have video's that you could get. Both of these have websites and information contacts.

Re: Turbine Animation

I have just managed to download from YouTube. Try this.

A Google search for "youtube download software" brought up loads of hits.

I chose one that took me to here http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/

it was offering version 2.1.6. today 15 March 08

the next download window offered me a choice of 5 servers, I picked option 2 "free downloads".

next download window took me to here http://www.free-downloads.net/downloads/BienneSoft_YouTube_Downloader/

I took the first option listed in a box below the hyperlink, to get it from a BienneSoft European server. The other two options were BienneSoft USA.

The download process after that was as per normal.

After the download I followed the very simple instructions to download the Three Gorges. The file saved as .flv. Nothing on my PC would play it. Not Windows Media Player or Quicktime. I went back to the software and it offered about 8 conversion options. I chose to save it as Windows Media Video file V 7 WMV.

This saved another copy of the Three Gorges into the same directory as the first.

I chose Optimal conversion, could have gone one better if I wanted to.

It works fine, sound as well.

Now I look forward to choking my HD full of YouTube downloads. The wife is ready wanting to get started on all her pop star videos.

Have Fun.

Sorry I took so long in responding. If you are able to create an animation of a turning turbine, please let me know. All I want is the actual turbime seperate from anything else, rotating.

Go to Youtube.com & type " Turbine Animation". You will find a couple. There are 2/3 on Gas Turbine but not on hydro. Anyway, the animation available are really informative.
