Stonehenge to be Moved?

04/01/2008 6:01 AM

This post about the excavation at Stonehenge is just the precursor to it possibly being moved to a safer location.

There are countless accidents on the nearby A303 caused by drivers taking their eyes off the road to view the spectacular monument.
There have been many schemes to move the roads or divert them through a tunnel.

Current thinking is that it will be cheaper and better to preserve the Henge by moving it to a better location.
Cardiff, London and Leeds are believed to be bidding for the prestigious project.

Ya, why not right in the middle of Leicester Sq. Or even better, move it to Arizona, set it up next to London Bridge.

Oh, wait a minute, I have a thought forming in my head....how about put up some fences along the A303 so that it can't be seen.

Naw, that would be to easy, and cost no where near enough.

Arizona, set it up next to London Bridge.

Yeh..the guy who bought London Bridge bought a right Pup...he thought he was buying Tower Bridge...the pretty one. He'd get his money's worth with Stone Henge it is pretty cool, but it is one hell of a distraction as you drive past it.

I remember driving down the highway in Arizona and seeing the sign for the London Bridge...buying a bridge...a bit of a hairbrained idea but we debated it for miles and miles, wondering if it really was the 'London' bridge (we were also confused with the tower bridge) or if it was just a last effort to get you to exit the highway and get lost in a tourist destination.

And dedicated lighting to replicate the movements of the sun THE REASON FOR WHICH IT WAS ASSEMBLED IN ITS PRESENT LOCATION AND ORIENTATION. Stonehenge isn't just the rocks, it's the ground it sets on. What's to stop "them" from moving graveyards (or Gettysburg) because they interfere with traffic and housing development.

Re: Stonehenge to be moved?

I saw this on the early evening news yesterday. They had prissy bit's of foam taped to the smaller blue-stones, to protect them as the bigger ones were tackled. Apart from grey foam not being adequate to protect them, they didn't even spray them high-visibility orange. What really annoys me is that they've done this without a proper public consultation. I tell you, it's the last time I give a cheery wave to one of those Eddy Stobart bast drivers. None of the potential relocation sites are suitable ; The welsh will complain, the Northeners will swear they have something bigger, and Banksi would put graffiti on them if in London. They should go to the White Cliffs of Dover. If tilted slightly, which they undoubtedly will be, it would look like 2-fingered waving at the French. The sea breeze would keep them nice and clean as well. Seriously though, how many times are we going to allow our national heritage to be destroyed like this ? It's a bloody disgrace.

"They should go to the White Cliffs of Dover."

For a certain vanishing generation, the most popular song after God Save the Queen is now to have new lyrics:

"There'll be blue stones over

the White Cliffs of Dover"

Sounds to me that they just want to dig them up. Good idea, destroy them so we know what they mean. Move them? Are you kidding me? What, it's too far for the tour busses to drive? Why don't you make a replica out of Styrofoam and put in Kew Gardens.

The A303 thing sounds like a lame excuse. Plant some trees and put up a fence. That will end all the rubbernecking right off. Of course, much cheaper than a diversion, or a tunnel, so it will never happen.

Re: Stonehenge to be Moved?

Did anybody see the 2005 documentary Stonehenge: The Ultimate Experiment Live?

It was produced by Darlow Smithson Productions and covered the construction, transportation, installation and initial use of a full scale replica of Stonehenge. The replica was constructed off site using low density foam polymers and then coated with high density reinforced polymers that protected the structure and reproduced the finish of the real structure. The individual elements were constricted in a large warehouse the location of which escapees me and then transported primarily by rail to the final site not too far from the real structure. The final structure was then aligned so that it would replicate the celestial alignment of the real structure back when it was built.

A very interesting program indeed and it covered the project in detail all the way from the initial concept right up to the archeologists using it to unravel some of the mysteries of the real Stonehenge. However, the transportation of the finished components became suspicious mainly due to the way it was not covered in the program.

The finished components didn't have anything like the mass of the real rock and stone elements but the size was the same as the real structure and turned into somewhat of a nightmare for the people building the reproduction. Ultimate the armed forces were involved with the transportation and they utilized and old rail spur line that ran from the warehouse they were using to construct the replica.

Nobody thought much about this seeming oversight by the documentary makers but there were noises that the armed forces being involved was a critical part of the project and the armed forces being involved was more important that was being let on. Not much was said but there was an undercurrent that the real reason for constructing the replica was a dry run to look at the problems that would be involved in dismantling the real Stonehenge and either storing it in a safe location or reconstructing in somewhere more suitable.

It certainly makes one think that there is more going on than the powers to be are admitting.

What you may not have noticed, masu, is that this fiasco is being conducted as part of the BBC's policy of promoting 'popular arachaeology'. That's all very well, but they go in and do these televised digs, paying scant regard to the fact that full time professionals could do it better. Getting some TV 'Celeb' to front such a programme is an insult to the professionals. Yet again, the need for instant gratification on TV overides common sense. The damage done will be irrepreable, and yet again it's being done with our money. I'll be very surprised if they can manage to move the stones without damage.

Re: Stonehenge to be Moved?

If moved then it no longer is a historical site but a museum piece. Here is some thing that has stood the test of time about 5000 years at its present location. Can we be insured that what would be provided at the new location would endure as well. Not being a citizen of your country I can not tell you how to safe guard your national treasures.

To reduce the traffic problems I due feel that they have made a mountain out of a mole hill. Have made extravagant plans that no one wants to fund.

Move the road 100 feet away from the site and plant some trees to obstruct the drivers view.

Of course, the English, over the centuries, riped up many sacred sites, all over the world, and you can see them today at the British Museum. Looks different when it hits home, eh?

English Rose is curiously absent so advice is lacking, but we may be able to get a Yul Bryner from Madam Tussuad's. Adding a 'Wicker Man' would make it a sure fire winner - a different politician every week.

Like the mayor of New York or anywhere else, they think they're fireproof, but the oiliness will get 'em in the end. Failing to voluntarily publish their own expenses says a lot about our politicians. Claiming security concern is one of the biggest loads of BS ever tried. The charade of parliamentary prayers must be a hoot at Mark 8:36. A vacant plinth at Trafalgar Square should have a statue of Robert Maxwell.

HBBS is involved with lots of activities including the marbles, parades, fireworks, wassailing, the Jack-in-the-green celebration & others, strangely they all seem to involve drinking large quantities of real ale.

Wot's so strange about drinking large quantities of real ale? Over here, we do it all the time - although oftentimes we substitute lager or pilsner for the ale - just for the sake of variety, mind you. After all, there's nothing quite like...

IT seems to me that planting a simple hedge between Stonehenge and the road, blocking the drivers view, would solve a lot of problems. It is definitely more environmental friendly. It is probably a much cheaper fix to the driver viewing problem than moving it. Plus it won't piss off the aliens when they return.

It reminds me of the Blackadder episode where they're grouped around a 'model' of the advance that has been made in the war. After a few moments, it emerges that it's the actual ground taken that they're looking at. A possibly far-fetched history exists about an old church on the Romney Marsh: The tower is positioned adjacent, and separate to, the main building. Local lore has it that the builders didn't understand the plans, in which the tower intended for the top of the building was drawn to one side for clarity. Oops.

OK, got the joke, but this is an extract from an article in the Guardian:

1915 Cecil Chubb bought Stonehenge at an auction in Salisbury for £6,600, and three years later presented it to the nation - receiving a knighthood in return, despite the suggestion in War Office records that the stones should be dismantled as a hazard to aviation.

Maybe they should all be fitted with red flashing lights?

Dear Sir or Madam,

If Stonehenge would really disturb traffic, would not it be less expensive to put up a wall at the road to hinder "viewing" by car ?

If ever this is no joke, Stonehenge was created exactly on that spot for some reasons that manhood would like to unravel ever since - why not move London Tower instead ?

Kind regards

Good idea, I've never understood why they built the tower so close to the railway & docks.

And here's one that couldn't disturb traffic (even in the UK) on it's worst day. It's a scale model in stents of Stonehenge. Stenthenge was created with pieces of scrap Nitinol self expanding vascular stents embedded in cured Sylgard 184 elastomer. It is a nearly perfect reproduction of the layout of the famous stone circle in England in a compact package just about the perfect size for a paper weight.

Want lots of them. Sounds just about right for chucking at noisy cats .

Then how about encasing the whole thing in cured Sylgard 184 elastomer (to protect & preserve it), and painting the surface of the encapsulation with camouflage colours (Salisbury Plain - green, brown & rapeseed yellow) so's not to distract the drivers.

Folks could see a real-time holographic reproduction (lasers & detectors being mounted at strategic points on the surface, masked off before painting. Or even using X-ray laser holography (if there is such a thing)).

Just an idea ...

But I've got to wait nearly 8 months for x-mas.

Now I'm starting to wonder if anyone does them in glass domes. You know, the one with pretty snow flurries. I like the illumination on your pic, mine looks a bit 'rustic', though I think they're the same. People really would by that, especially if it had a base part with LED's, I ain't joking. I like it as shown in your post, though whether I'd buy it depends on weight/feel. I'd also want real rock in it.

A thought that comes to mind is what the Chinese did with their porcelain warriors. They built a humongous building around them, so they are now climatically controlled... with no more wind errosion. It would no longer be visible from the highway, and people would have to park to see it. Also if you charged admission, it would help defray the cost of the building and maintenance.

The thought of moving the whole thing seems a bit blasphemous. How do they propose to move the holes which once had wooden posts in them? If one of the cities want a stonhenge, let them build a copy.
