I received this email from a friend:
if you somehow locked your keys in the car and had an extra battery-operated key elsewhere, you could call someone and have them hold the device to their phone and push the button while you hold your phone towards your car...viola. door opened from remote location.
She claims her dad tried it out and it worked.
I'm skeptical, for all the obvious reasons. So I did some googling and found some hits that say it's bogus, and some that say they tried it and it worked.
It seems like it shouldn't work - since phones work off of sound and remote keys work off of RF, and at different frequencies than the phone's RF.
But then, it also seems unlikely that a cell phone could transmit sound through an unpowered speaker - and we've all observed that phenomena.
So, I tried it this morning. It didn't work. But no experiment is valid with only a single data point. So, my challenge to you is to perform this experiment and report back.
Be sure that you are far enough away from the car that the remote can't work on it's own (mine works on the car in the driveway from inside the house).
Also, make a note of your signal strength - mine was weak when I tried it. And the distance to the nearest cell tower, if you know it. And also your brand of cell phone and provider.
Mine is ATT, with an LG phone at the transmitting end and an ATT 8525 PDA at the car end.
