DVD Finalizing Not on the Original Recording Device

05/05/2008 9:20 AM

Have a problem with my DVD/VHS recorder (Go Video) in that the DVD part is no longer operable. It does not sense the DVD (it has been professionally cleaned to no avail). Add to that I have a ton of recorded disks, but did not finalize them and they will not work on other units. Is there any way to finalize a DVD after it has been recorded on one instrument and have it work on another? Please help & thanks.

Could this be a problem with different regions???

As I haven't a DVD player I'm possibly the last person to be able to offer any information on them!!!

John.

No, I don't believe it is a matter of regions, but more of a reason of systems that generated the recording. The DVD that have been recorded but not finalized are not "readable" or acknowledged of an existance without them being finalized. I just have to believe that there is something out there (software or ?) that would allow someone to finalize (and make acceptable to other units). I just don't know what that is. Thanks.

Hello rpciok@verizon.net

Your Read laser has probably failed. This is quite a common problem with certain brands of CD and DVD players, because they save a few cents using cheaper lasers, then over-driving the laser to achieve the reading, thus early read laser failure is a result, generally soon after the original Warranty expires.

There are certain brands of Stereo CD/DVD Players which I would refuse to purchase now.

I presently know of no easy way to play those "open" disks, unless you get a second machine of same Make/Model, and finalize or "close-off" each disk so it may be read by other makes/Models of player.

It may be possible to extract the data using a Computer, and if I actually had one of your disks here, I could attempt it, but if I could read the disk and extract the data to a file, the best I could do would be to write in AVI mode or similar on new DVD's.

If you do not wish to try using another Same Make/Model of Recorder to close the disks, and have Computer access locally, it may be worthwhile to try the computer method.

Kind Regards....

It may have more to do with the track positioning parts in the new drive vs the old one. As in he laser head gets positioned in a little bit different spot then on the other machine.

Try to find another (same model) machine that has about the same usage and wear patterns as the one you made them with. Then try and close the sessions and see what happens.

Hello North of 60

Tracking in a CD or DVD reader drive, does not rely on pre-aligned positioning by mechanical means, (like the earlier vinyl record).

CD and DVD Recordings start at the inner circle start ring, and spiral outwards, the opposite of vinyl or shellac record discs, which spiral inwards.

The read head (if it is able to read the disk), advises the mechanism to move until the inner ring is found, then the outward spiral of pits or burns is located, then auto-adjusts the mechanism to locate the spiral to read the information at the closing end of the spiral, which is summary of contents etc at the "finalization".

If the disk is "finalized", the system now has the full information on what the disk contains, where to look for song or scene changes and so on (Address and Information Details) - and if playing is done, reads the outward spiral and auto-adjusts the mechanism to follow, so that the data may be read on a continuing basis.

If the disk is "uncompleted = not finalized", the reader is unable to read the disk summary, thus it has no instructions for how to actually read the disk, and starts the read process once more, often recycling in that way, until it decides that it is "unable to read disk".

The above explanation is quite simplified, there are also feedback and control loops and other processes involved.

Kind Regards....

My hard drive DVD player states that unless the disc is finalized it is not possible to play it on any other DVD player. When a disc is not finalized it is possible to keep adding to them with the same player which allows you to fill a disc before it is finalized.

I believe there was an early Roxio product that addressed this but I don't recall the name.

Don't give up it can be done, the finalization is more gimmick than end of trial.

Any PC with a DVD Burner can do this hardware wise and you also need software to drive the action, something like Nero or WinOnCD for example.

If you have a friend with a DVD recorder (especially a recent model from Sony for example) there is usually a menu that allows you to finalize the DVD. The new Sony that I have, has it as a seperate menu item....

DVDs (and CDs) which have not been finalized, will only allow reading of the data in a "Burner".....but once finalised, all DVD players and DVD ROMs can then "see" the data/film....

I also had one of these Go Video DVD recorder and VCR combinations. After about a year of use, it stopped recognizing any DVD disc, it would play a CD, but not a DVD. So, I replaced it with another one from Sony. I do not remember how I finalized the DVDs, I think, I went on the DVD icon on the left side and then a pop up screen appeared that showed the finalizing option. Because it is quite a few years that I had it, I may not be correct, but you hve to try and also go to the Owner's manual, that may have some infor on this.

I have all those DVD's that I recorded on this one and they all work on my computer. I remember that some of the DVDs I burnt were not finalized but I could go back insert the DVD and finalize them later also

Dear Andy, I have a Sharp DV-RW 340 that quit transfering Video Tape to DVDs after I watched a Porno movie on it. After it quit doing what I bought it for I sort of just gave up. It was easy to use, sort of, but I did come to see that it was a transitional sort of device.

I felt punished for watching a porno.

It did seem from my research that your operating procedures were the mature technology for handing these things, and that it would be a waste of money to try and get the original machine repaired.

My TEAC CD burner that will take analog tapes and digitize them has been stable and keeps on working if I do want to either copy a CD I made or push in from tapes I made when I carried a tape recorder around like it was a camera.
