What Hare-Brained Ideas are Being Explored, and Why?

05/16/2008 5:15 PM

I'm looking for a sampling of some bad science that is being explored(exploited) for profit or glory.

You know the type of items I'm after... The ones that make you roll your eyes back whenever they're mentioned. e.g. Yull Brown's Gas, Zero-Point Energy, the ever popular perpetual motion machine...

Even pseudo-legit technologies like ultra-capacitors, and carbon-fiber flywheels, when applied as inappropriate solutions to inappropriate problems are fair game.

I'm hoping to collect a meaningful list to help to educate investors & lawmakers. By helping them not waste time on bogus proposals I believe good sciance will benefit enormously.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Re: What Hare-Brained Ideas are Being Explored, and Why?

05/19/2008 10:49 AM

My wife sent this to me this AM.

A stranger was seated next to a little 5th grade girl on the airplane when the stranger turned to her and said: "Let's talk. I've heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger!" The little girl, who had just opened her book, closed it slowly and said to the stranger:"What would you like to talk about?"

"Oh, I don't know?", said the stranger. "How about nuclear power?" "OK." She said. "That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first: A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat grass, the same stuff. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?"

The stranger thinks about it and says: "Hmmm, I have no idea." To which the little girl replies: "Do you really feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don't know shit?"

It's certainly one of the funniest as well.

In Parkinson's book about the eponymous 'Parkinson's law', there's a great piece on committee meetings. Two items are on the agendas; a new nuclear reactor and a new coffee machine for the office. The discussion over the later takes ages compared to the first. My own take on this is that it's about collecting lapel badges. If the Coffee machine decision turns out to be wrong, then everyone can distance themself by saying it was no big deal. If the decision turns out to be good, then all can enjoy mentioning the tremendous stance they took that one fine day. There's plenty of mileage in repeatedly mentioning a 'good' choice, even if it's significance was minor. It's a little harder to extricate yourself from a bad vote on a nuclear power plant.

The example I recall was Sir John Harvey-Jones in his book 'Making it Happen' It's the bike rack at the nuclear powerplant... everyone wanted to put in their opinion 'cos they could all understand a 'bike rack'... whereas they just rubberstamped the details of the powerstation 'cos most of 'em had no idea about it.

Not sure if JHJ related a similar one, but Parkinson was ahead of him in terms of publishing date. I'm still hunting for my copy of his book, which is lost somewhere in the house (). Now I'm going to have to do some checking, because I don't recall what became of JHJ. Hopefully it was a better ending than Maxwell, and I wouldn't mind betting he had/has a few more friends about. A bit tragic that Maxwells suck-ups only declared their position after the event, but given that we still have people with the name Archer it's not surprising.

There is no bad science since facts are not good or bad. There is bad use of facts or bad use of technology made from the facts.

Correct me if I am wrong.

I believe "good sciance", will benefit enormously, when a seance is scientific.

If there is a wind turbine manufacturer that wants a chance to bring something incredible to market...

They should contact me.

I believe my design could supplement and even replace many existing designs.

I look at problems and then solve them.

I could eliminate most of the negative issues with just one of my ideas.

lower cost

lower maintenance

fewer parts / far more simple...

investors welcome to come directly to me.

is that ok? www.jedesigngroup.com

don't get all huffy guys.. I don't expect a positive response, but I just had to trow this one out there. the perfect thread for this one...

show me a little intere$t and I'd show you what I have..

Great new designs rarely come from a meeting where the business man says 'we need a great new design'

I have some cred too!

Patents cost a fortune. And have to be defended. Even dyson couldn't afford to defend his patents in the american market about 10 years back. (Another company copied his design, and said "sue me"). He couldn't afford to and ended up "cross licencing" with them. You should be able to state your grand new idea to the world, have it timestamped and get the royaltys when people start making your wigets. Patents slow down implementation of technology because you have all these wild eyed gollums going around looking at you madly and trying to keep their " Precious" a secret as long as they can. How the hell is that going to get stuff done? Some of those nuts might even have good ideas! but we will never know.

Dyson, you mean the cyclonic vacuum cleaners? Check out Consumer Reports on the efficacy of those vacuum cleaners. Guess what? The ol' bag style beats them hands down. OK, they have sexy physics working for them, but ultimately, a paper filter bag traps more and costs waaaaaaaay less than that pricey dyson vacuum cleaner.

You are right about the costs, and the cost to defend, but that's the system we have. If JE has such a great idea (how many new ideas exist under the sun?), then at the very least, get the application in.

To simply say, I have a great idea, pay me money and I'll tell you about it, is going call on the skeptic in me. If it's a great idea, raise the capital and start your own business. That's how stuff gets done.

OH.. I am, and I will... I just think it's fun to put it out there.

I expected this very response... Call me peculiar if you want... I won't deny it

----------------------

If I'm able to pull off what I say I can do?

I can only imagine some guy will get a Charley horse from another guy who said "what do you think of this 'offer'?' to the skeptic.

(unlikely.. yes)

Because of what you say... Just my 'putting it out there' in this manner is a sure fire way to generate scepticism. I have no problem with that.

The history of people looking for investment capital is riddled with lame and crooked attempts.

I'm doing much worse than that. I'm not looking for investment capital at all. I'm asking a qualified company to come to Vegas and put a bet on my table to see if I have something they might want behind door number three.

If they like what I have, they can have comfort in knowing that they have my respect for being a forward thinking company who did their research and blew a little cash.. very Little. Does my table have better odds or is is just better flashy lights? I don't even know myself.

People who are willing to look outside the normal supply chain for ideas.

The magnanimous action would be in account and they would be granted the upper hand where they would get in be granted a time period to research the idea and provide me with a sole contract for negotiation would be magnanimous.

I enjoy the irony that a company will spend hundreds of millions developing this and that 'often junk' and let good ideas pass right under their noses.

Sure I COULD put my money where my mouth is on this one, and one day I'll have that chance. Right now I have several other more simple ideas in the pipe that will get priority over this one due to my methodology.

Soooo.. this is just one of my fun, albeit huge and more costly propositions... not On my to do list today... BUT I can be influenced. I would love to see it engineered into an efficient design. Sooner than later the way things are going, but like I said... Not today.

Pay me more and I'll give a better presentation. That's about it. Hire me based on what I say... Yeah.. that's asking for a lot. I always chase the ideas I like, and if I'm running outside the lines at times... that's just the way i do things. I'm alway a little... or a lot different. But I'm good at what I do.

In all actuality I'd be as surprised as anyone to see any money in my mailbox. It would also require me to do some real work towards this and put my money where my mouth is. that's scary.. even to me... I'm always more comfortable working with my own dough... So That's why i say GIVE. (other stipulations to be discussed)

Don't think I don't run outside the lines with a little bit of caution and apprehension. I've been burned. I still do things my way and I enjoy it.

So please... serious inquiry's only... and none of them with any stress or pressure.

that should keep my mailbox empty .. ok?

Correct - if the idea is complex or subtle - 10 to 15 K for the first and 10 K or so for ancillary.

If you can describe it and draw it, and it is "straightforward" file it yourself for about $1500.

Test - revise - test - build -

Can you down-scale your idea - a house or 3 instead of a village size?

Aid agencies are paying wild money for remote electricity. What scale/cost are you able to deliver ( 10 kw ? )

After nearly fiver years, I just got confirmation of 3 patent numbers I will receive.

I need them too! ,but they are not for this...

I would not grant anything except the opportunity to view and invest in my concept, but I would secure my provisional before making the first major move..

Since that's a way bigger project than my next one/s... I'd be willing to do things just a little bit differently so that I don't have to take on the final engineering specs.

If said company should wish to move forward and secure a licencing agreement, then I would give them some ... concessions for picking up on the idea.

first company to show me 10g plus travel and I'll whip somthing... (a rough provisional, and rough but nice.. semi functioning scale prototype) together. (better than my current functioning prototype)

Then 'they' get to see 'it' first and come up with an offer.

not a bad gamble

..but on paper... screen.. whatever.. it sounds horrible..

....................... Patents are a pain in the arse, and not for every product, but some things MUST have them.

Re: What Hare-Brained Ideas are Being Explored, and Why?

I'd love to know what others feel are the theoretical limits of a flywheel made from traditional materials.

I've been wondering about the potential physical size and capability that a modern flywheel could be built?

I am thinking of a situation where a hydraulic accumulator discharges when full at random intervals and providing a powerful kick to keep a large flywheel generator cruising.

What are the biggest ones that can travel by rail and or truck?

The only other option I can think of is to use several accumulators in series parallel.. or whatever to drive the 'generator'... so that's where the size, safety and cost considerations come into play...

Would it be better and less costly... to use an accumulator to drive a large flywheel generator, or just have several accumulators that might just get full anyway in prime operation?

what's the combo?

Just assume I'm filling those accumulators with a lot of pressure in a random but very powerful manner. The off periods where the random power is not working in in our favor would rely on stored energy.

I'm torn...

Perhaps ... yes.?..

In the same way a WT can need to shut down for safety in high wind, is there a similar issue with loading a flywheel with to much energy at once for an extended period? That's why I'm think of using both the flywheel AND an accumulator with more on line to store a little bonus energy should the flywheel read critical speed or whatever...

unlikely yes? I don't know either..

...cost effective theoretical limits?

If I need more capacity at any given location, I want to know at what size i would start banking them, or what type of flywheels?

I like the idea that a flywheel generator will keep the power smooth... with simple parts.

thoughts?

___________________________

I was just reading my copy of wind today that came in todays mail (i study all of my interests), and all it talks about is how many new projects are being developed. I've also learned that most seem to succumb to similar long term issues that make me question their validitity.

I've also looked at them and said they look nice enough, but I wouldn't want them next door ...or down the street... for the noise alone...

___________

There is never? any mention that I can think of as to how these projects are going to provide or are are successful in providing a lower cost electricity than previous installations, just larger MW units that are costly units with enormous installation and maintenance issues., but it can be done more greenly.?.

I'm less interested in the feel the good green aspect of natural power sources... especially when they end up costing more than they are worth? I'm more interested in economical products that preform. We don't need more waste spending.

OK... that's random as all..

ps ..all units can be installed below grade for safety and silence of operation.

While not related to flywheels, the accumulator idea sounds very similar to what I have read of the operation of the Pelamis Wave Energy Generator currently in operation in Scotland. You may find some ideas in their literature...

I am not sure it is hare-brained, it is what you do when you perceive the possibility that your ass may be on the line for something. The statement that it is to determine the cause is just a cover story, because no one would believe the findings if they came out up front and said they were hiring an attorney to protect their ass against possible claims of liability.

But what chance does this have of preventing future colapses??? And, obviously, when one hires lawyers, one is more interested in blaming than in determining the root cause...

Obviously it would not prevent any future problem. It is just a means of investigating liability and assigning blame to the best option for fall guy, publically, and protecting the attorneys clients from having their own liabilities brought to public attention. Attorneys do not make determinations about root causes, they argue in favor of their clients to protect them against liability.

Yull Brown - copied Dr Rhodes device ( Water Welder - now available in China for $400 and in the us for $3500 -) Dr Rhodes is still annoyed -

http://www.pureenergysystems.com/academy/papers/Common_Duct_Electrolytic_OxyHydrogen/index.html

This paper ( mostly Dr. Rhodes timeline and explanation ) is useful for understanding the REAL science, technology, AND controversy around hydroxy. 1961 research/patent

and documentation from Dr Rhodes in 2004

By the way - he was NOT the first - that is a longer discussion -

for now - recent history will do

Stanley Meyer ran a VW dune buggy on water ( hydroxy generated on board ) 1994

has been reproduced

Bessler's Wheel still to be reproduced /

Pop Garrett GARRETT, Henry : Electrolytic Carburetor ~ Garrett built & drove a water-fueled car in 1935. US Patent # 2,006,676

Has been reproduced

Almost anything on Peswiki ( links from above link ) will raise the level of many discussions here.

Many inventions are left behind because of politics, short term costs, time ( lack of )

and HORRID business decisions by the inventor or developer -

By January, I intend to demo MY hybrid engine - sure to be a fun topic :)

For those interested in the Political and Economic problems ( and personal ) facing inventors of "Novel" devices and procedures, the Bessler wheel could lead to a very interesting discussion.

The level of Scientists and Politicians who saw it and tested it make it unlikely it was a fraud.

Here is a link to a group of gravity devices - two current working devices in Europe.

http://peswiki.com/index.php/Directory:Gravity_Motors

Oopps - almost forgot the CURRENT news - Japanese water powered GENERATOR

http://www.peswiki.com/index.php/Directory:Genepax_Co_Ltd#Official_Website

Enough rabble rousing for tonight -

</soapbox>
