It might be quicker to refer to the user manual for each piece of equipment.

Make connection between your mobile and laptop by means: data cable either wifi or bluetooth. Appropriate drivers should be pre-installed.

Use GPRS for web surfing. You can be informed how to do this after visiting site of your mobile operator.

How "to do free browsing"? Umm.. If you've meant for no pay, I really don't know how to do this as GPRS traffic should be payed/pre-payed. If only your naive friend would lend you recklessly his/her sim card for a time.

Either that or go to where there is free WIFI access, a motorway service area....

Or Wetherspoons pubs, they have free WiFi connections...

Oh where are you? bet you don't have Wetherspoon's pubs do you?

Yes, agreed, WIFI practically the only option to surf inet for free in most of countries.
