Transportation Songs

06/26/2008 10:49 PM

Well, it's summer and all the threads are really heavy and significant. So, for some fun....

What are the best songs about transportation? Use your imagination and good taste (that rules out Leader of the Pack)

Here's some of mine to start:

Motorcycle: 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, Richard Thompson

Trains: Rock Island Line, Leadbelly

Trucks: Convoy, CJ McCall

Pedestrian: Walking to New Orleans, Fats Domino

The best list wins 14000 points.

I guess 100 bottles of beer on the wall wouldn't cut the mustard!

Re: Transportation songs

Some rail-orientated ones:

  • 'Rock Island Line' was also the title of a skiffle song by Lonnie Donegan.
  • 'Chatanooga choo-choo'?
  • 'Take the A train'? Oh no, that one didn't have any words.
  • 'Steam' by Peter Gabriel?
  • 'Locomotion' (various covers)

Rather than the points, one of Hendrik's GOOZ cards would be nice.

Wow, I had forgotten Lonnie Donegan. He goes back a way.

OK, in addition to the points, I'm offering a coupon AND free shipping.

Little Eva (IMHO) did the best Locomotion.

Re: Transportation songs

06/27/2008 8:26 AM

..Ok ..not Transportation as such...but...

The backing sound track to 'Summer in the City'.
I remember seeing a documentary about when they made it...they got this old sound guy in with a big collection of sounds on vinly and he found just the sort of traffic noise and pneumatic drill sounds they wanted and an old VW Beetle horn...(About 1min 15 secs in ...and of course I just love the line 'Cool Cat lookin' lookin' for a Kitty)

All very evoctive.... S'pose I should mark it as 'Off Topic' but I shalln't...<ha ha exit left cackling wildly>

I was there a couple of months ago for my son's graduation and we took the T quite a bit. ... The Daily or weekly pass worked out well for 'frequent' on/off for us.

You do know that some people actually move about in their cars rather than just sit by the lake and watch the submarine races, don't you?

Watching submarines go by is quite unlikely. Especially in muddy water. Pirogues however seem quite likely, that is if they don't have holes in them.

Sun roof open.....

All the windows rolled down....wind whipping thru my hair...

Shades precariously perched on my nose....53 year old geezer...

Pedal to the metal traveling up the nearest mountain....

with AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" blaring at 6 speaker Full Volume with me screaming out the words!!!!

Does that count???...LOL

Who is Jeff Lang. I find the song much harsher than Richard Thompson's, but probably more like "young James". What else has Lang done?

Who is Jeff Lang?

http://www.jefflang.com.au/

TVP45

I prefer the version from his "Disturbed Folk Vol1" CD and you are right it does sound from young James' perspective. There is also a version on his "Disturbed Folk Vol 2" which is in a similar vain to Richard Thompson's original. I think that this can be attributed to a mellowing of Jeff's style between releases. He tours the US regularly so keep an eye on his tour dates and catch him live.

Regards Henry

Del

This is a photo of an impeller from a Warman 6/4 pump that supplies mineral (ilmenite, rutile and zircon) slurry to a set of spiral separators. Due to the abrasive nature of this slurry the pump impellers are lined with polyurethane and are replaced on a 24 week cycle.

This particular impeller was not showing the typical ware at its 24 weekly wet end service and The RE (me), the maintenance controller and the senior fitter decided to put the impeller back for another 8 weeks, our shut interval.

This impeller was removed from the pump 3 days prior to its next 24 week wet end service. The root cause of this failure was a lack of communication between the RE, the maintenance controller, the senior fitter, the maintenance planner/scheduler and the CMMS. The result was 2.5 hours downtime, 3 very red faces and a procedure for when we tinker with the maintenance plans.

The lesson learned is that the computer system needs to be included in the communication matrix and told of changes that you make, also that the planner/scheduler's need to be told in writing.

Re: Transportation Songs

Transportation is a pretty wide field to cover. It involves a means or mode of transportation, something or someone to transport, the path of transport, or the reason for the transport.

The means of transportation could range from feet, to horses, to boats, to aircraft, to spacecraft.

With that said, let's not forget These Boots Are Made For Walking by Nancy Sinatra.
