The World's Most Complicated Railway Junction

10/04/2008 12:08 AM

Here's a picture of railway lines at Frankfurt, Germany:

Trust you enjoy the picture.

Kind Regards....

Sorta reminiscent of the UP Bailey yard in North Platte, NE, USA except this scene is crammed into a few acres instead of a few miles. I guess real estate is a bit more pricey in Frankfurt than in No. Platte. How'd you like to model that string of double slip turnouts in the lower left of the Frankfurt pic for a nice winter project? ........UP Bailey link:

Hello Ed Weldon

Thanks for that weblink, and that yard is certainly larger than the one in Frankfurt, Germany, but as you say, real estate is cheaper in North Platte.

Just a tip for including a weblink as a Hyperlink in a Post:

Type that weblink into your Text Editor Box, in the usual way.

Highlight that text by left Click, run your mouse over it, then go to the "tiny globe with the chain attached icon", above your Text Editor Box, (5th from left) just to the right of the abc icon, press that and "voila", an advisory window pops up, ensure that the webaddress is correct, click on "Submit" button, and you now have a hyperlink, which should show blue text underlined (or whatever your Internet Browser is set for), and is left clickable to take you there.

I tried to locate a large format picture of the North Platte rail yard, but so far unable to see it in a full photo.

However I have since tried looking at "Bailey Yard" in "Google Earth", and am now able to see that yard and adjacent railway yards, in view from above.

Kind Regards....

Hello sparky,

are you a mind reader? I have been seeing more web links on the posts on CR4 but, not the same name as the actual link. Sometimes it is been the persons name that is the link. I was wondering how they did it?

It can save a lot of space and typing?

cheers...........

Hello babybear

Any text can be turned into a Hyperlink, provided the actual hyperlink is a valid one: http://xxxxxxx.xxx etc or xxxx@xxxx as address.

I'm not a mindreader, and just like to help others.

Hello sparky,

should have asked...........do you mind me shortening your name. Even if theres another 'sparky' they are not the one who sent this picture in?

Quite amazing. You can see where they have even 'made room' and used every little space, by routing rails round tight bends near the 'buffers'.

It is also on several levels as well, giving it the real 3rd degree, well, kinda?

Do not understand 'Train Watchers', but, I can really appreciate trains and their design and, clever Engineering with stations stacked up like cake boxes and like your picture above. Thanks.

There is a searchable database of Railway photos right here: http://www.railpictures.net/ - With more than 225,000 pictures on-line.

The Frankfurt rail Yard at top picture is full-size here: http://bp1.blogger.com/_3ITFWFnGnfE/RnrDWJNdJeI/AAAAAAAAAFY/EENNyuj9ulU/s1600-h/frankfurt_germany.jpg

For some reason that photo does not now show on railpictures.net (At least I cannot locate it amongst the nearly 1/4 million pictures on that railpictures website).

It is far better in the full-size version.

Kind Regards....

I tried to find a pic of Sagami Ohno in Japan, which is another crazy train intersection, but no luck. I imagine there are quite a few that boggle the mind.

You guys who are interested in this -- Go spend an evening playing around on Google Earth. There are some places there, especially in the US, where the resolution is so high that you can measure the distance between rails to within 3-4 inches. One I'm sure of is the New York waterfront on the west side of the Hudson River. But beware, it's a time sponge.

BTW, I use a screen capture shareware called Printkey, to capture images in .jpg format from Google Earth and most anything else. It runs on a PC and is rock solid on my win2000 pro machine.

Try Maps Live instead ( http://maps.live.com/ ). In addition to aerial views, they have birds eye, which is four shots taken of the same area from four different directions. Way cool. And yes, I do use the Printkey function to take shots and paste them into a PowerPoint file.
