.dcm files

02/08/2009 5:49 AM

Does anyone know of a freeware program that can delete all the .dcm files in a folder, rather than going through each one by hand?

I have 150 folders each with about 20 DCM files in

I use ZTREE for that.

You can also go into CMD and delete it in DOS

with DEL *.dcm

NO
DEL *.dcm

The 'star' * is a wildcard meaning any characters...
You'd have to specify the apropriate directory first too.
(I only chipped in here 'cos everyone was shouting DEL...)

Do what I do.

I use the Search utility to display all files with the .dcm extension. I tell it to search for *.dcm in the drive or folder (whichever). After the search has stopped, it will list all the .dcm files no matter where it is. Then I just press Ctrl+A (select all) and press delete.

No need for special software and no need to go to DOS.

regards,

Vulcan

For a little clarity, here's an example:

I searched for all .pdf files in My Documents. I included subfolders, hidden files and system folders (if any).

This is the result. It shows all the pdf files in every folder and subfolder in My Documents. If I had selected C:, I would have gotten every pdf file in my C: drive.

regards,

Vulcan

To do in handronically, open the folder in Windows Explorer, & click at the head of the "Type" column. The .dcm files will all be grouped together - it's then easy to select them all (using shift-click) & delete them.

Admittedly, you'd have to do all 150 folders individually, so a DOS batch type approach would be quicker.

there was a old dos program called sweep.com, I have used it in windows about 10 years ago, and it would go into all the directorys as well. You would add the dos command you would like.

syntac was: sweep del *.dcm

If you don't want to use the windows search dialog, could use the command line and ERASE with the proper semantics.

ERASE [/P] [/F] [/S] [/Q] [/A[[:]attributes]] names

names Specifies a list of one or more files or directories.
Wildcards may be used to delete multiple files. If a
directory is specified, all files within the directory
will be deleted.

/P Prompts for confirmation before deleting each file.
/F Force deleting of read-only files.
/S Delete specified files from all subdirectories.
/Q Quiet mode, do not ask if ok to delete on global wildcard
/A Selects files to delete based on attributes

So if you want to delete some files with a .dcm extension, simply cd.. to the root directory and go

C:\ ERASE *.DCM /S

Still, seems like it would be simpler to use the Search command window, however, if you don't have access to it for some reason and you DO have access to the command line, it can work for you as demonstrated.

For those who are too young to have used DOS... Directories = Folders.

Right?
