Dumper Dilemma!

02/13/2009 7:48 PM

Hi all! I have acquired a two tonne site articulated 4WD dumper to use as a powered trailer on my farm (make and model are unknown but is similar to a Thwaits)! My problem is that it has a very low forward/reverse speed. Usually, articulated dumpers have a top forward speed of around 19kph but my one is less than half that.

It is powered by a 16hp Lister Diesel. It has a three speed gear box followed by a dropper box (driver, driven and three intermediate gears) to the two drive shafts for front and rear axles.

I'm looking for a simple way to double the forward speed of the m/c that isn't going to cost me a fortune.

I've looked at the gear box but it doesn't look hopeful that I could swap a gear in there. I've looked at the dropper box. This is probably an area that I could modify. Perhaps remove all gears and convert to chain drive (then I can please myself with the speed ratio's). The axles could be modified (probably at great cost) and lastly, I could double the circumference of the wheels (with all sorts of knock on problems).

Without doing something really expensive like, converting to hydrostatic drive, does anybody have any ideas that I may not have considered?

Thanks in advance!

With only 16 horsepower you will probably have a hard time powering the loaded vehicle any faster than the current gearing allows. You might want to do the math and make sure you can generate the torque necessary to pull the anticipated loads at the speed you desire before you make any permanent modifications to the machine.

I do not know what the dumper you have, but I suspect it could be a similar vehicle to ones that we have used on sites for moving concrete about. On these machines, and the Lister engine seems to be a giveaway as English manufacturer. There should be a small flat plate lever on the RHS of the gearbox down at floor plate level that gets covered with mud & other crap that covers the lever. This lever, if it is the the same as ours, is a 2 to 1 speed changer that effectively doubles the ground travel speed. The dropper box is actually a chain driven gear box where it selects from one pair of driven gears to output gears via a Dog Clutch. Be interested to hear the results, and a photo would help identify the machine.

Hi Tecmate

Oh, I wish my dropper box was chain drive! As I said previously, it has a driver spur, a driven spur and three intermediate gears. As with all odd numbers of gears, the rotation remains the same input to output so, a chain drive would work and solve my problem. Here are some photos:-

Beej50, The dumpy looks like a Barsby from a manufacturer in Sydney. My mate up the road has one similar so I will check with him tomorrow and let you know if his has the same gearbox. The models I used were Rustons and were the same as the Hornsby design which were also manufactured in Sydney under licence to the English design. I believe there should be a change over gear somewhere so don't dispair yet.The gear for high gear ratio in all these old buggies can only be selected with the machine stopped.

Beej50, Your machine is almost surely a model from the late 1960s to 1980s which was manufactured under a few names of 'Barford, Aveling Barford, Aveling' and is now marketed under the Terex name. These machines are hugely successful and widely used on most construction sites, or as my mate uses his for in removing scrap offcuts from his fabrication workshop.I know that it has high and low ranges in the gearbox, but I have not had to drive it. I have a contact that may be able to help you.

Hi Tecmate

Ar Har! Strange it should be an Aveling Barford! Before I emigrated to good old Oz, my home town in the UK was Grantham, the home town of Aveling Barford. I had the miss-fortune to work on a few projects there while masquerading as an hydraulics engineer. I eventually started my own company and bought their chief engineer of R&D. It's a small world. However:-

I think you might be right as I'm sure that there should be a high/low range on the box. The trouble is that I can't see any evidence of one and there are no obvious places that a lever could/might have been!

I will ring Justin Kelly in the morning as see if he knows whats what.

I am extremely grateful for your help and will let you know the outcome!

Hello tecmate,

how are you?

That does look like a Barford to me also. I was driving one in 1980-ish. I did not know about any double gearing though, and we had ours from new.

Just a note to say it is not a good idea to list an email and or phone # on these posts. It will or can cause problems with spam. OK? Hope you do not mind me saying about this. You can and should use 'PM' when sending sensitive info like address' etc. You can still remove it by asking Chris Leonard at admin? Take a look in your PM.........

Take care.

Hi Babybear, You are right, I was unkind to give personal contact details in an open forum, and I am truly sorry. I am a technical person in the mechanical and materials handling field and now I am going to ask a favour. I was tired last night and answering emails for my cliental and colleagues & forgot my protocols. What is PM and how do I use it?

Hello tecmate,

I have seen your replies in this and other threads and know you are helpful and clever.

Anyway, to use PM click on a user name on the left beside the post. That will take you to the profile of that person and near the right side of the screen is a message "Send 'their name' a message". It will bring a writing area which is Private Mail. Went sent it can be seen only by you and the sender. If you get into serious conversation arranging details with another poster, it is often better and quicker, you can use any info' like works address' etc.

Hope this helps.

I see Chris Leonard has also dropped you a line about using the "REPORT" to get in touch with admin also. Probably the best way........(thanks Chris)

Take care..............

Actually the best way to make such a request would be to click the "Report!" button in the comment, and explain what should be removed or to send an email to cr4admin@globalspec.com. Either method will alert the entire CR4 team - I'm not always available.

Not having a picture or technical exploded drawing of the dropper box I can only suggest.

Got calculator?

You'll need change the ratio ie, increase the number of gear teeth on the driver or reduce those of the driven.

The "dropper" box, we call a transfer case here in the States; (we Yanks are such rebels,LOL), are the boxes coupled directly or are they "divorced", with a short drive shaft between, could you add another gear box to get a step up ratio, or taller tires, it doesn't sound like you have a lot of room, I'm curious what this machine looks like, can you post a pic, good luck, Mike. Double sized wheels appear to be the quick and cheap option.

As long as you do not have any hills that need to be driven up fully loaded with only 16 BHP.

Hi, Andy Germany!

I was hoping somebody would give a lead-in for a wisecrack in this post. Thanks.

You wrote, "As long as you do not have any hills that need to be driven up fully loaded with only 16 BHP". And I think you have just found the perfect solution!

Employ the machine while going downhill only, in neutral. On the way down, spread the load. Then, drive it back uphill empty! If you triple the downhill speed, and drive up in gear, you'll be doubling the overall speed! [This may require finding a farm on a mountainside.]

(At this point, I should be writing "Voila!". But I so loved it the other day when a poster wrote it another way, I may switch over permanently.)

Walla!

Mark

Hello Beej50,

This is just a thought but, best you should consider it.

How much weight are you likely to be towing?

If it is a big weight it may 'catch up with you' going down hill and possibly tip you over? In a tractor, it will be heavier and the seat a lot higher. If the hitch fails coming down a slope it could easily 'nerf' you out of your seat and you could well be in hospital............if you are lucky!

Just a thought as I say.

Hi Babybear

Thanks for your considerations mate but, although it is only a two ton capacity dumper, if I put ten tons in, I don't think it would turn over.

I'm beginning to wonder from yours and other replys, if the pictures of the m/c that I posted earlyer cannot be seen by some comentators.

Oh, and dare I ask what 'nerf (ing)' is ? I'd like to know just in case I'm doing it with blatant disregards to PC! I'd hate it if I was !

Hello Beej50,

Hope you get things sorted.

'nerf' or nerfed, nerfing, is a slang term meaning shove, shoved, shoving, push, pushed, pushing.......

OK?

Hi Babybear

Ooh! Thanks for that! It sounds quite nasty! If my little dumper gets out of hand, I will keep an eye out for her propensity to nerf me!

I think I might actually be familiar with this term under a different name! It's what the wife does to me when Coronation Street comes on UKTV !

Have a good 'un cobber!

Hello Beej50,

BTW, it will be the trailer that will be 'nerfing' you, as it tries to over-take you going down a slope. But you know that if it is what 'her indoors' does to you! Joking of course!

You sound very happy and I appreciate your best wishes. Mine are sent to you also, OK my good man'?.........Tried to slip a little English UK in there but it just sounds silly. Much sooner have your "cobber"!

Take care.

Hi Babybear

I still think that you haven't seen the pictures of the dumper. There is NO trailer. The load is at the front of the dumper.

Someone has suggested to me that the gearbox has a po-go stick gear shift and I need to push the gear lever down to select hi-range. I have tried this with no success but, I think the idea may have some merit as this function may have been disabled inside the box so that site employees don't speed in a factory environment. I think that a little more physical investigation may be in order!

Thanks for your best wishes, me ol china !

Hello Beej50,

I was driving one exactly the same for two years, so I sort of know what a dumper looks like

I have read your OP and I got the impression (wrongly) that you were going to tow a trailer. But you actually say, "to use as a powered trailer", which is not the same as towing a trailer is it? Sorry for the misunderstanding! They are good machines. However, I never had any upper or lower set of gears on the one I used. I am guessing at the top speed empty, was 15 mph? 24 kph.

Take care............and good luck !
