The Media Just Doesn't Get Science

05/29/2009 11:20 AM

I'm tired of writers. I'm tired of politicians. I'm tired of hacks. I know this isn't the best way to "start a discussion" but I'm trying to be honest here. I'm simply tired of people who don't know science talking about science. What set me off? The following article found on CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/science/05/29/jetpack/index.html

In it CNN ponders where the technologies that were imagined in the 50s and 60s are? Where are the jetpacks? It then confidently procedes to the convenient conclusion that those ideas weren't practical in real life.

Nonsense.

The real answer is funding. Like anything else, you have to pay for science. If you don't fund the research, it takes longer for these things to develop. Consider the following:

Science Spending as a percent of GDP

Wow, so you mean we stopped paying for science and technological development is disappointing?

Give me something for nothing

Nowadays we want everything and bristle at the thought of paying. I wan't safe roads, I want safe food, I wan't a safe country, I want a jet pack. Wait, what do you mean you need money?!! Be more efficient!!!

Science Spending as a percent of GDP

Take a real hard look at that graph above. Do you see how much science spending has been cut as a percent of GDP? Do we really expect something for nothing?

In Conclusion

Lets stop the BS. Let's stop telling ourselves lies that we can have our cake and eat it too. If we cut spending for science for decades, don't expect technological innovation to maintain a breakneck pace. In the end you get what you pay for.

Historically there has been no greater indication of a country about to decline as a decreased spending on science, just ask the turks, or the persians, or the chinese (who seem to have learned this lesson and are now run by Engineers).

The easiest lies to fall for are the ones we tell ourselves, if we don't step up now and start to aggressively fund science, this country will decline.

I've always suspected that the medias' pandering to the lowest common denominator is in fact due to ulterior motives.

Hey Roger - I agree 90% with your sentiments. I grew up during the rise of the Apollo, SkyLab and early Space Shuttle programs, when science spending in the U.S. was still moving at a good pace, and was motivated to become an engineer as a result. Many of my best classroom competitors for grades at Clarkson and RPI, and best professors, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, were students and student-teachers from China. I have a feeling the West Europeans, Chinese and Japanese have done well for their citizens by investing a larger percentage of their GDP's in hard-science projects like the CERN supercollider. Ultimately, though, since we're a democracy, it's not really the media, it's us, the voters, who choose how to allocate our tax dollars, so I blame myself, for not convincing my fellow citizens to spend more on science, more than I blame the media. Thanks for blogging on this topic. - Larry

You make a good point. The media seems like it's more a symptom of the problem rather than the problem.

Technically, we are a republic. Thus taxation is decided by elected representatives, not directly by voters.

Hi RCE - Agreed - a republican form of democracy - no King or Queen of America, but a democracy still, where the voters have some say - and responsibility - in the formation of tax policy for science. Not perfect, but a better system, in my humble, than what came before in history. Some might argue things in your state, California, are more democratic for the voting public than in other states in our union, including my Empire one, since you have ballot initiatives there. But the outcomes of those initiatives don't please everyone. - Larry

A very bright fellow faced with airports being shut down left and right, hours of operation curtailed, etc stood in front of the NBAA convention (National Business Aircraft Association) and said:

"Whatever your field, whatever your job - if you earn your living from aviation I recommend you move. Move next to an airport. Join the community association. Tell everyone you meet that you earn your living from that airport and it's activities. And when that community decides to vote on the operations or existance of that airport - you vote too."

I failed in my political fight to keep a small local community airport open.

It was really painful for me to lose.

Over 9 years I had things in the papers, was interviewed and quoted, showed up for town council meetings, and said things on the radio.

Locally there is 500 acres of land controlled by NASA, that just sits there.

Would be a good thing for the economy if some R&D was happening there, but they have control of the land really as a mechanism to make sure nothing happens at all there.

The local paper actually was proud of itself for helping to squash the airport.

Looks to me as if the Universities that are publicly or even privately funded, are where the Corporations go for R&D. You gottah ask yourself if it is "The Media", or an "Independent Media", that is the downfall of our common understandings?

P.S. Chris Hudson of the AOPA, -aircraft owners and pilots association, suggested that if you want to make clear what an airport does in the community, have all who care about it, use 2 dollar bills in common transactions in the community.

Something to consider-NASA may not be doing anything because while not formally discussing the fact, small airports are notorious for highly contaminated surface soils (they have horribly nasty stuff), and if NASA tries to transfer, sell, or otherwise utilize the land, the contamination will be come apparent during discovery processes. If they do not know for a fact how bad the contamination is and do nothing that will force discovery, they can avoid incurring relatively immediate investigation, planning, monitoring, clean up and remediation costs. I have worked with a few small Cities that wished they had never tried to modify, expand, or close their small airport because of the metals, fuels and pesticides contamination they found during discovery processes. Once you discover the contamination you are legally required to report it, and at that point the State and Federal Environmental Protection Agencies get involved, clean then becomes imminent in the near future, and a expenditure must be incurred.

Dear RCE, I am constantly trying to find ways to not do anything. Thanks for the help.

Please send me some money so I can become saintly, and make no attempts to do anything at all, except maybe complain about others ambitions.

Actually I am lying.

Truthfully I think it is okay to pay people to clean up.

Most of the time I try and figure out how to get things done.

Wouldn't saintly be more along the lines of trying to fix and clean up everything without any practical consideration of costs. Though it does sound like you would be willing to pay for the investigations of such facilities and the remediation. Rough estimate I would guess something like $ 5000 for the initial Ph I ESA, another $50,000 to $150,000 for the Ph II ESA, Then there is the PS&E, NEPA and permitting for about $1,000,000, and finally the Clean Closure for about $5,000,000 to $20,000,000. So out of pocket you'd only need to come up with something on the order of $6,500,000 to maybe $21,500,000, which i guess you won't mind paying for to have some one clean something up. However, I suspect NASA, much like many agencies, has a limited budget and throwing a extra 20 million is expensive and maybe doesn't promote NASA's main objectives. I know just from working with the State and municipalities, even if you are dumping raw sewage in the local lake people think cleaning things up is great until they have to pay the local taxes for the clean up efforts (even if they currently pay far less than the national or even county-wide average).

Totally agree. In fact, other than Mr. Wizard, Bill Nye, Neil Tyson, LeVar Burton, TED and Mythbusters I can't think of any TV celebrity that both understood and promoted science.

Sad really, especially for the masses who form their perception of the world around what's on TV.

The good thing is MSM is dying and the internet is fast becoming the medium of choice. Where one actually has a choice.

Re: The Media Just Doesn't Get Science

ROGER PINK,

The topic you have brought in is of critical importance as regard to the status and accountability of R & D investments say whether federal or private. Your opinion discloses the declining rate of fundings to science and technologies which could lead to worsened future, if not taken care of. The other major cause propagating this trend is the lack of effectiveness of value generated out of massive research fundings. I tried my postings twice , but the sudden power failures faced, erased my typed stuff. Today I perseverantly got myself set for the marathon reply.

FACTORS FOR INEFFECTIVE OUTCOMES:

  • Science & technology and life styles are all improving, but the human race is yet to behave as total superior beings- we have not given up our racial comparisons, taken any firm steps to solve perennial global issues, mutual uplift, international understandings. Developed countries are so for very generous in equipping the under developed countries, there seems to be many lost links in accomplishing this.
  • When so many issues on the planet like population, environmental degradation, resources sharing, energy and fuel related issues, meeting of basic needs and employments etc, the insecurity problems, race for global supremacy, huge military and defence expenses are major fund eaters without a positive outcome.
  • The responsible positive diversion and themes of research focus in my humble and genuine opinion could be in the following areas for which result oriented outcomes, technologies and global implementations are due. Balanced water distribution, artificial rain water storages, land allocations and reformations wrto to priority for agriculture and industrialization and restrictions to urbanization, restoration of nature, all land, air, water and major pollution issues and abatement strategies, Sustainable development in all walks of activities and judicial use of resources on the planet, balanced resources sharings, stronger and effective international regulations and practices, green energy resources, carbon abatement and a life of discipline and values. Research in all dimensions like appropriate science and technologies, policies by way of international co operation and contribution and involvement got to be triggered on.Well it could be a greedy dream , but a positive focus could be worth considering.
  • The lethargic average human tendencies. Many humans find a settled and assured means of life and carry on with the happy life and materialistic life styles with least concern to contribute. Blaming is the best defence, humans find shelter in case of questions on accountability and responsibility. Many countries do have mind sets that, let somebody else develop , we then will timely adapt it and no risk of R& D. In fact a country with people of efforts, responsibility and generosity and originality of intellectuality, motivated by noble and sharp leadership could thrive well and contribute in this direction.
  • Incompatibilities between policy makers and scientists and lack of empathy and fund allocations for appropriate ventures.
  • Well having collectively taken up research tasks, the other major blockade is the ineffectiveness of the researchers/ the teams. Any thing by government lacks the seriousness and ends up mere prolonging report and data submissions and not of any concrete outputs. This is some thing connected to the human teams including strategic leaders, who should demand and inspire contributions and results oriented performance –" PLAY WELL OR QUIT THE GAME" policies. The private sector is reasonably much better performer in this aspect, since it is the game of survival for them.
  • Another major set back leading to fund digestion is the OVER expenditure and mega investment in infrastructure build up. High cost research activities can be diverted to low cost simulation researches based on performance studies so as to proceed on a clear cut fashion. Involvement and choice of human based on merit and capability is the major delivery factor. A panel of external critics and strategic guidance could improve line of direction.
  • Strangely, the commitment, determination, and a sense of responsibility and total risk is concerned- the INDIVIDUAL factor had been historically proven to be more productive than groups. Good leaders as individuals had developed countries. The self motivated scientists and inventors [EDISON, CURIE,BENJOMEN FRANKLIN and many more by whose dedication we stand today ] have contributed more-The fact being - INDEPENDENT RESEARCH GIVES TOTAL FREEDOM AS WELL AS RESPONSIBILITY. The conducive and harmonious group and collective brain work is a major result yielding factor. Mind is much powerful than money.
  • The citizen factor is not an external entity as mere spectator and commentator-in fact should volunteer for good causes and render contributions
  • The fast phase of changes, long term vision are to kept in mind .
  • SCIENCE AND TECHNOLGY IS NOT A ONE DAY'S DELIVERY-it is the hard earned experience and inheritance of our responsible elders who meant goodwill for the next generations and no doubt the present generation got to follow the same line of magnanimity of vision and thought and not problems to future generations.
  • If this goodwill and reformation is not part our culture faculty ,we may be responsible to get blamed .
  • Every humans irrespective of country, race ,religion should harness this ideal , education and all societies should groom this global brotherhood, a happy and serene earth-a life of meaningfulness, due for all beings.

Thank you for your persistence in getting your reply posted.

I agree with some of what you said, and disagree with other things. I agree with your assessment of human beings and how they like to feel "settled". I agree also that it is a small percentage of people who propel the race forward while others are along for the ride (the 80-20 rule).

I disagree with your belief that there is a lack of effectiveness generated by massive research funding. I think this is a misconception. In my opinion, the output of science is knowledge, not products. It's for the engineers to take that knowledge and use it. People keep mentioning Edison. Edison was a great engineer, but he took ideas from other people and made them work (which I actually think is the trademark of a great engineer).

Science is not for the short sited (I was going to fix that misspelling, but I like the double-entendre, so I'm leaving it - RP). It's hard to explain to someone why knowing the electrical properties of DNA in a carbon nanotube is important. But 30 years from now when a disease is cured by targeted gene therapy, no one will question the value then.

My point is that you can't go from A to B without hitting everything in between. Unfortunately everything between A and B is boring and looks the same, so the progress isn't obvious until you hit B. If you stop walking halfway, or slow down because you haven't instantly made it to B, it will take that much longer to get there.

Anyway, thanks for your contribution, I really think it's great that you thought so much of the discussion that you persevered through two power failures.

Best Regards,

Roger

Thank you Roger Pink for starting such an interesting and obviously controversial topic for discussion. The resulting comments were very surprising and showed how much fear, phobias, prejudice, miss-trust, miss-informed and conspiracy theorists are out there. It is amazing that we as a species have survived this long.

I know that becoming an inventor/engineer was the right thing for me. I still believe that one person can make a difference. It takes all kinds to make the world go round but I know I could definitely not work with people. We are our own worst enemies. Give me an idea, laboratory and some gadgets any time.

I myself make a distinction between working with people, and working for people.

Most of us really are three people.

-adult parent and child, in one. Anyway, what we do on CR4 is a participatory media, similar to SW radio nets.

So right here right now there is evidence that some Media, "get science".

Your quote strikes at the conundrum that demands you believe in more than the facts.
