What Do You Call It?

06/05/2009 1:40 PM

If you were to place an object to dispurse a flow of a liquid, like a dime or ball bearing infront of a pressure washer nozzle what would the term for that object be, and would the term depend on type of fluid / pressure used

Dispersor, deflector, thingamyjig...
The term would depend on the nationality, background and humour of those using or building the equipment.
It could well be named after a body part or bodilly funcion.
The German name for it would doubtless be at least two lines long

Thingamyjig: noun a name given to any part or component (usually broken) from trucker to mechanic -----oops I actually said that ?!

Terminology is for the patent lawyers (little humor at work) wups I did it again!

It is a

"wassereabweisendes sowie wasserlauf beinflussendes objekt, welches seinen namen nicht veraendert waere es verschienen fluessigketen ausgesetzt".

I could have left it in one word but that would not answer the question either now, would it?

You were right it just made two lines, Ky.

I would just call it pointless. Why would you block a pressure washer spray in the first place?

Technically I would refer to it as diffuser. It's diffusing the high pressure high velocity stream into a low pressure low velocity spray.

Placing an object in the flow of water like the water nozzle of a building fire sprinkler head its a deflector.

Placing a ball bearing in front of a pressure washer nozzle- I think the term is 'projectile'

Since it's for a patent lawyers, how about a radial deflector.

Had occasion once to place a object at the nozzle of a furnace burner lance. The diesel was cheap and difficult to ignite, the object assisted atomisation of the fuel, which worked quite well. So I would call it an atomiser.

This is definitely the right answer for one class of designs, depending on the spec. GA

An Eco-gun.

Non Arctic Warfare Dihydrogen Oxide Gunnery System .

(I'd have gone with 'NUMBNUTS', but couldn't find the right words !)

Oddog (what would the item be called) This could be influenced by the purpose of placing said item into the stream. Some thoughts are as follows. Interruptor / Diffusor / Divertor / Atomizor / Restrictor / Baffle / Deterrent / Mister / Oxygenater / Limiter / Constraint / Dispursor / Splitor / Splash Back / Splasher / Pill / Dime / Ball Bearing / Operator Wetter / Inhibiter. Have we tickeled your fancy with anything yet? If not give us more imput such as purpose or intent. The answer to your second question is maybe. Be shur and post your chosen nomenclature. Jerrell

With one ball bearing, I would call it a one ball disperser. Real men would use 2 balls, then it would be a manly disperser.

Device to redirect a coherent fluid stream to produce a 360 degree radial dispersion of said fluid stream so that the resultant flow of said fluid stream is perpendicular to the original direction of said fluid stream flow.

If made of an appropriately low-grade material, 'a consumable' . You'd have to make sure it eroded slowly, rather than suddenly failed. Also, the last little bit of the projectile <thing> could be a problem, but suitably worded disclaimers might cover you.

The term could be varied with fluid/pressure as 'Eco-<thing>', 'Extra Strong <thing>', ' <thing>-Elite', etc etc. I'd suggest prophylactics as a source of inspiration for this aspect.

I thank you all for your comments, insight and humor I am now at the patent pending stage I have been working on a fuel injector for hi pressure direct injection engines my mind works well with mechanical items and thoughts and falters on linguistic challenges as for my patent I am in the midst of computer modeling and giving myself another headache
