Could you perhaps elaborate a little on the question as it is unclear and open to interpretation (is it about left or right handed people?)

Not if you don't wear any, I had steel toes installed to comply with factory safety requirements.

I remember a short novel about a guy having his vacation in a remote place. He met another solitaire guy, and they have had a few hours together, playing chess (or whatever). The first guy was wearing a glorious beard. Before they went, each on his way, to bed, the second guy asked the first one how is he sleeping. Facing up replies the first one. The second asks again: how you keep your beard - under the blanket or over the blanket?

Well, that question put the first one in difficulty, he couldn't answer it, on the spot. In fact, all night long he couldn't answer that simple question: how is he keeping the beard, on or under the blanket.

True, it is a very old joke, but it is also a very good one. I posted it because so many posters didn't understand the OP, which meant, they wouldn't have come across the joke. Some still don't understand, even after more than 120 responses.

But I gave some conscious thought about this on a plane trip to Atlanta early last year.

I realized I was a right hand dresser, the right sock, right shoe, and right sleeve buttons came first always. (anywhere there was a choice).

So being the tinker I am, I wondered what it would be like to reverse the process.

And then, I forced myself to dress left, but the minute I didn't think about it, even after several months of conscious effort, I reverted back to right.

Did I come up with any findings?

Yes, I did, i was just thinking like a doddering old tinker.

Damned if I know - never paid attention. I do, however. always put my underpants on before the pants, my undershirt before the shirt (in the winter - no undershirt in the summer), and I always put my socks on before my shoes. I don't believe I've ever missed in those orders...

This really got me lookin' at myself, I'm right handed but: I "dress" my watch left, right sock always first. Shorts, either right or left depending on which way I lean or in which hand I'm holding my shorts that morning. If I open the cupboard with my left or right this also makes a difference as to the hand I'll use to grab my clothes. it goes on but I can't seem to really identify whether I dress left or right, except for the watch & sock & they are left and right so does that make me !!! BIPOLAR ???.

Right leg or arm in first to all clothing articles. When dressed, everything is symmetrical, apart from my left hip which is lower than my right due to uneven leg lengths.

To answer Del's questions, I don't know, I haven't spent time on developing an accurate method to measure such a difference...

Unfortunately, it's so automatic that I don't think about it. If I do think about it beforehand, then I won't know what I would have done if I hadn't been thinking about it. It's like asking a bowler what he does with his other hand - it's sure to throw him off his game.

My mother was a seamstress for theater costumes so at least I understand the question. Left.

For me, it varies from day to day. There are many variables that change each day of the week and on weekends. Some are which hand I grab my socks off of the table, am I holding anything else. Do I grab my coat and gloves first that morning? Do I put my shoes on my left side or my right side? Are the dogs in the way? Am I sitting on my bed or standing when I put my pants on (sitting it is both legs at same time)? And the variables list goes on.

Today, it was right arm for shirt, left leg for pants, left sock and right shoe. Yesterday, it was right leg for pants, left arm for shirt, right sock and right shoe. I am right handed and watch is on my left wrist.

Boy I took this a whole different way- I thought you meant Conservative, liberal or independent!!! LOL

Buttons to the right; buttonholes to the left would be traditional for a gentleman's shirt. A lady's blouse goes the other way.

The reason?

Gentlemen used to dress themselves while ladies used to have a maid help them. The arrangement described makes it easier for right-handed persons, which are more numerous than left-handed ones, to do the buttons up.

It has become a standard based upon tradition.

Which means modern women must be more dexterous than men...or we have a ready made (pun intended) reason for taking longer to get dressed.....

...and I (stupid male of course) always thought that the buttons went the other way was to make it easier for us men to "help" our Ladies divest themselves of their clothes quicker, the buutons were then easier for RH males.......how silly of me!

ANDY has it right. When trousers were tailored, the question "do you dress right or left?" would be asked by the tailor so he could add a little more room on that leg of the trousers.
