Tread Marks on Sidewalk

03/03/2010 8:06 PM

We are having this sculpture installed where I work. The man lift leaves black marks on the sidewalk and I'll have very little time to get them off the sidewalk before the dignitaries come to make speeches in 36 hours.

Sand/soda blasting is out. Power washer, maybe but does anyone know of a solution that I can use. Maybe something we can roll on and hose off. Never worried about tread marks before, but the boss is a clean fanatic.

BTW it's 25 feet tall and the base weighs 18,000#. Total weight about 24,000#. It came in about 10 pieces on two flat bed trailers. Assembly takes three days.

Thanks!

If you can't get rid of tracks, put green artificial grass or outdoor carpet down to cover it up. Might help to cover/hide wires for lights, PA etc.

Or if you can restrict the man-lift to a certain area, put something down to protect walkway.

Love the display, what's it for?

You're gonna get slammed. Maybe if the pitchfork was more visible, you would recognize a classic Norman Rockwell piece. The picture gets a lot of satire with different faces for the old folks.

The black marks are probably rubber abraded off the tyres. If that's the case, then try a "stiff brush" on a sample. If that works, then run over it with a street sweeper (dry) to remove the evidence.

This piece is by J. Seward Johnson, based on American Gothic by Grant Woods.

It's called "God Bless America".

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,

Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,

Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,

As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer. "

God Bless America, Land that I love.

Stand beside her, and guide her Thru the night with a light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies, To the oceans, white with foam

God bless America, My home sweet home.

What a beautiful song...it always brings a tear to my eye.

I don't know if bleach would work, but it's cheap and probably worth a try, along with a stiff-bristled push-broom and some elbow grease.

Toss a bunch of old clocks all over the sidewalk and tell the dignitaries it's part of a new international collaboration: Hello Dali Wood.

If only the cleanliness fan had specified polyurethane wheels on the scissors lift....

Quick coat of dark gray paint? Better yet, roll out red carpet to cover it up.

"Dali Wood" cracked me up. GA, Sue. (The best painting I have seen by Dali is "The Artist's Eye", but I haven't found it in any books. I own a "Leda Atomica", which was featured in a Gjon Mili Life magazine photo.)

I also admire and love Dali. I have a medallion of Leda and the Swan. As for the melting clocks, which is fairly one of his more familiar works, I was amazed to see it in person noting it is no larger than a coffee table book. My monitor is bigger!

Sounds like you are short of time... right to it:

http://www.essortment.com/home/tiremarkremova_scri.htm

There are several suggestions here. Hope one of them works for you.

The last sentence there is another message: "As with most staining, prevention and a quick response time are crucial in permanent stain removal."

That's what I was looking for.

I'll report tomorrow on what we did and how it worked.

The speach making and unveiling is tomorrow AM and the workers won't be finished till late today.

I missed out on a face to face meeting with Milo because of this monster.

Wow!

Looked online for some info on your project. All of this hubub, and it is going to be moved away in about 4 months!

Pretty cool, though.

Very sad that you missed Milo... perhaps in the future. It would be sad to miss an opportunity to meet any of the CR4 members.

It came on two flatbeds and in about 10 pieces. Took a full day and a 35 ton crane to put the pieces together. Then another day to finish.

The crane assembly crew rented the lift and I didn't see it on the sidewalk till it was too late. That's when we put the luan down.

Thanks to you all. The unveiling went off perfectly. (we covered them with parachutes until the ceremony this morning. Then let the mayor and such pull the cords to pull the chutes off.

sounds to me like you are using future tense for the man lift. I suggestion not leaving the sidewalk exposed.. just throw some sand down before using it, and wash or sweep the sand up when done.

if the rubber marks are already there.. maybe muriatic acid will work. (use gloves and mask) water when done..

That's the silliest question I've ever seen on CR4.

Cover the darn sidewalk before the man lift gets there.

Helllllllllllo?! .....

Re: Tread Marks on Sidewalk

Hi lynlych

If abrasion got it there it can be removed with abrasive methods. Nothing a bit of elbow grease can't help. (In OZ that means the stuff, that, when you move the lower arm around the wrist using the determination and strength of the upper arm and body assisted by the elbow and the will to get it cleaned up what ever happens or will come in your way.)

If not that many elbows are available, I see that you live in a warmer climate so just apply some water soluble paint and remove it after wards. Just hose it off. In case of rain you're home and hosed anyway. You will have other issues which good old Murphy will and can throw at you.

Step 2. would involve some one on one therapy for the dignitaries of town. A little skid mark and they can be irritated? You should be afraid, very afraid!

If you can't repair it, hide it, unless there is safety at stake. 25 feet? I would do it backwards in an hour. Nice way of introducing us to the real subject though.

Great work!! Don't let the little cosmetics stand in the way of achievement. She's good as gold Mate, good as gold, Ky.

about $100 to buy

They should be just over there:-

Don't tell anybody else, but when the assembly crew was finished, they cleaned the sidewalk of the rubber marks.

They used a pressure washer and a little citrus cleaner.

Thanks!

Lay down cheap luan plywood or particle board type sheets (1/4") on the sidewalk. The same stuff they use to protect wood floors in your house when moving large appliances in and out.

This is a good answer, mostly because it is the same thing I was going to say. Utility companies do this all of the time to avoid messing up lawns or sidewalks when they have to drive on them or put the outriggers down. It saves a lot of time and headaches later.

If your boss is a clean fanatic, it is to bad he did not think of covering the area before hand. What one of the other member said apply sand to the side walk while finishing up then swept clear and then acid/water solution and while your down on your knees pray!!!

Will these people be inspecting the concrete or rubbing elbows? I wouldn't worry it myself but perhaps you could use some water base white paint that will eventually fade with the tire marks...

several years ago and I forget exactly how it happened I managed to get shaving cream on my sidewalk. The concrete looked new after it was hosed off. Just let it work for a while first. It will even get oil stains... Coca cola works on linoleum...

Hi Lyn and all,

Know this was a 'time-sensitive issue', but for future reference (and lack of advanced planning i.e. ground covers) try TSP (TriSodiumPhosphate) cleaner at about 50/50 with water. A little wire brush work a minute or two after application wirks wonders. Especially the man-lift or scissor jack type tires, which are a hard rubber/solid construction. This a (SADLY) "been there-Done That!!" comment...

Hope all went well,

GLB

If it is concrete go to one of the Home Centers and get a bottle of concrete cleaner and a stiff nylon bristle brush. The stuff worked to take used motor oil stains out of my driveway, not to mention tire marks. I was really impressed. It should not take you longer than about 15 or 20 minutes
