Do Veterans Think AntiScience I ought to have been Closed?

04/20/2010 8:15 PM

Long Time Heavy Hitters were grappling with AntiScience Part I, initiated by Roger Pink. The life of the mind is either directing the body, or the body directing the mind.

What does it mean to those of CR4 that this particular thread was closed?

Why was it closed?

At first I was disappointed, but on further consideration I agree with closing Part I. The controversy over whether certain types of comments are degrading, derogatory, and so on, was derailing the discussion.

The topic is not ended and will presumably resume in Part II. There is more than one way it might go, and I look forward to further development.

On further consideration, having viewed a good portion of the discussion, it was probably quashed due to Report!s from liberal, antireligion, ACLU types.

I didn't think it was you - had no idea who it was, but maybe I should stop talking to myself.

Geez, Mikerho, turn on your spell check. I reckon you don't like Pac-10, but you misspelled UCLA.

What if it turns out that God Himself is a liberal, anti-religious, ACLU type? I recommend that you think really hard about this...and be careful of stereotyping.

Or worse, She might turn out to be religious - just none of the ones we practice. Oy vey! Don't stand too near me during the next lightning storm.

Actually, Roger's last post said he would ask admin to close it, so I assume it was at his request. It had gotten pretty far from the original topic, so just as well to close the discussion.

I'm also looking forward to part II.

I think it should have been, it was just getting more derailed.

Initially the tie in between religious aspect and science was done very well by Roger, and of course it was going to go back and forth between the two subjects, both different both related.

When a thread gets the amount of posts it had and the direction of the topic waivers off course which it did, I myself was losing interest in it.

Many a Thread simply dies a natural death. Sometimes the dead come back to life. The life of the mind is what we are here for. Science and Technology have profound effects on the politics that powerful people use to either lead, or squash us. Ethics and morality as to how you employ tools are part of the equation, that ought not be off limits for discussion on a Forum such as this.

Personally I think it is a unique place. It is grounded in the concrete. There are some great minds better educated than most around. To close a thread AH and Milo were weighing in on as known thinkers with much much evidence of contributions over years didn't seem wise, by my lights.

How am I to even view Part II, in light of what happened to Part I?

I was just getting to further study to discuss, but what's the point, if somebody I don't know can just stop it all, cause either they don't like it, or don't understand it?

I like complete people, and complete minds.
