How Much Does Your Fuel Cost?

06/24/2010 2:42 PM

Pump prices to hit £1.30 a litre in the UK
Motorists are looking at pump prices of 130ppl by the end of the year, according to RMI Petrol. The organisation's chairman Brian Madderson warned that, while Chancellor George Osborne did not announce any increase in fuel duty in the Emergency Budget on Tuesday, the decision to raise VAT to 20% on January ...

YIKES! $2.85/Gallon.

Well, somebody pumps your gas! That must be worth a buck and a quarter, eh? Self-Serve is almost all you find in these parts. Last time I was in Oregon, the entire state was Gas-Jockey pumps. Is that still true?

But, cheeze whiz, $1.25 a gallon extra?

And somebody is bound to offer up that "Doorman, you are closer to a refinery" baloney. Nonsense. I lived in a town with TWO refineries, and another was located fifteen miles down the freeway. Gasoline was ALWAYS $.40 to $.50 higher there than another metropolitan area 350 miles away, in the same state, which was 350 miles away from a refinery!

Doorman,

The gasoline cannot be sold directly from the refinery, it has to be "aged" first and then "invigorated". There is currently only one operational Invignotron and it is in Joliet Illinois, thus the added expense.

If this is not done, it will stick to your valves and make a mess.

If you don't believe me, ask Blackie Carbon or the Hastings Piston Rings guy.

Now wait.. Are you telling us that if you buy gasoline ANYWHERE in continental USA, that fuel spent some time in Joliet, IL?

post script: great, now I have folks changing their vacation plans to get the cheap gas I advertised. What a dumb mistake. Sorry Usbport.

Well that just frosts my shorts, I tell ya'. Boy oh boy, and there I wuz thinking I could justify a trip to see that stature somewhere near there of Paul Bunyan. Well, maybe I'll just come anyway and find someplace on the way that sells some good ludefisk.

Bemidji, Minnesota. One of their claims to fame is, indeed, Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.

Lutefisk? Do you put that stuff in your mouth?

Here is one generally accepted method to lutefisk consumption:

To understand the relationship between aquavit and lutefisk, here's an experiment you can do at home. In addition to aquavit, you will need a slice of lemon, a cracker, a dishtowel, ketchup, a piece of lettuce, some caviar, and a Kit-Kat candy bar.

  1. Take a shot aquavit.
  2. Take two. (They're small.)
  3. Put a bit of caviar on a bit of lettuce.
  4. Put the lettuce on a cracker.
  5. Squeeze some lemon juice on the caviar.
  6. Pour some ketchup on the Kit-Kat bar.
  7. Tie the dishtowel around your eyes.

If you can taste the difference between caviar on a cracker and ketchup on a Kit-Kat while blindfolded, you have not had enough aquavit to be ready for lutefisk. Return to step one.

This method compliments of lutefiskchef.info

Hello peter. I was thinking of a thread like this.

Regular Unleaded Gasoline (self serve) is USD $1.55/US gallon today in Fargo ND USA.

If my conversions are correct, £1.30/liter works out to USD $7.36/US Gallon.

Yikes! Is that right?

If my conversions are correct, USD $1.55/US gallon works out to 27 pee/liter.

Yikes! Is that right?

Well, yeah, but the only two places up there that actually have any at that price are Slippery Art's Tattoo Shop and Biker's Bar in Dodge and Wall Drugs in half-pint bottles.

He's pulling yer leg, dude. The cheapest gas in Fargo is over to the Flying J on 39th - $2.57 a gallon and they don't even give green stamps.

Are you serious? $1.55/gallon? It's $2.85 here and we are self-serve too! That difference seems incredible! I could see $2.55. Maybe I should buy a tanker and start a lucrative retail business (buying the gas for transportation on your end, of course)!

Please attribute this ridiculous comment to a hectic work day!

How about $2.55 per gallon. I even did the math, and commented on farmatt without realizing the error.

I did not believe your Jedi mind tricks would work on me, but I see I was mistaken.

I sent a CR4 internal message to Yoda, seeking advice from the great master. He replied

Resistance to your Jedi mind tricks may be futile, but I will be strong in the future.... (until I say something else dumb, anyway!).

Remembering that there are different "dollars" in use around the world and that a "gallon" is has at least two different meanings, this is an ideal example for confusion to reign supreme. That's without even bringing octane rating and ethanol content into the conversation.

That being understood, our local fuel (self serve) is around $1.25 to $1.30 per liter.

That's Aus dollars (currently trading at $US0.87)

92 Octane rating fuel

10% ethanol mix

I'll leave the conversions up to other readers.

(We did peak around $1.60 back when oil was $US125 per barrel before the GFC.)

Which grade of crude is it? That makes a difference, too.

e >> Investment >> World Industries >> Oil >> Crude Oil

Crude Oil, Crude Oil Grades, Varieties of Crude Oil

Crude oil has withstood the test of time, with its oldest oil bearing rocks dating back to over 600 million years. Its chemical composition and usage are varied.

Its main characteristics are:

    • It is highly inflammable dark, dense fluid that consists of hydrocarbon molecules.
    • It has been found in natural underground reservoirs.
    • It produces petroleum products and accounts for nearly 40% of the world's primary energy consumption.
    • When processed, it yields natural gas and chemical residue, which are also fuels.
    • It is classified on the basis of viscosity and the extent of impurities (like sulfur) present in it. Classification of Crude Oil: Viscosity Viscosity of crude oil is the internal friction of a liquid. Its evaluation involves assessing the thickness of the substance. Based on its viscosity, crude oil is classified as:
      • Light crude oil: It has low wax content.
      • Heavy crude oil: This type of crude oil has higher wax ratio as compared to light crude oil. Due to high density, it does not flow as freely as the light crude oil.
The density of crude oil is very important, which is why the oil industry uses the API (American Petrochemical Institute) gravity as its measurement.

Oil Grades

Here are various grades of crude oil, based on API gravity measurements:
      • Light crude oil: It has API gravity more than 31.1. °
      • Medium crude oil: It has API gravity between 22.3° and 31.1.°
      • Heavy crude oil: It has API gravity lower than 22.3.°

Classification of Crude Oil: Sulfur Content

Based on its sulfur content, crude oil is classified as follows:

Sweet crude oil

      :
      • It has very little sulfur content (less than 0.5%) with diminutive amounts of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide.
      • Due to low percentage of wax, it has low viscosity which facilitates easy pumping and transportation of oil.
      • It reduces the chances of oil clogging while processing.
      • It can be used to process gasoline, kerosene and high quality diesel.
      • Light sweet crude oil demands the highest price in the market.

Sour crude oil

      :
      • It has a high percentage of sulfur impurities (more than 0.5%).
      • Refining is highly necessary so that it can be processed into gasoline or kerosene.
      • It is usually processed into fuel oil and diesel instead of gasoline.
Crude oil varieties are in great demand and highly priced. To stay updated about

crude oil prices

, follow the prices of benchmark varieties such as the OPEC basket price, Brent and Dubai crude.

Australia's primary reported measures are "TAPAS" crude which seems to be traded on Singapore marked and "Light(or maybe sweet) Texas crude".

The local oil companies claim to "benchmark" against those prices so that we pay "world parity" prices.

Looooooong ago, the local price was determined by competition between a couple of suppliers. Government decided that society was being greedy and introduced the world parity idea.

It was never really made clear where the difference in sell price went. I suspect that a little has gone to Gvt and the rest to the multinationals who run the rigs/refineries.

Either way, everyone here knows that the price is higher than the actual cost of production and there are no acceptable "home brew" options yet available.

Did try a little "biodiesel" and even some straight veg oil in my old tractor. Mixed results, but no scientific method used. As mythbusters might determine "feasible, but not yet practical." It's still cheaper (when costing my time and effort to collect and prepare alternatives) to buy from the bowser.

"the rest to the multinationals who run the rigs/refineries"

If you want to get poor very quickly then get yourself into the Refining business. (Rigs - crude etc are a different matter). Most of the "multinationals" are getting out of refining due to poor returns on investment.

This breakdown of prices in South Africa may be of interest. Products are price controlled by government - refineries (multinationals) do not set prices.

Petrol £1.20/litre, though it varies according to where one buys.

Derv £1.18/litre, similarly variable.

Kerosine for home heating £0.42/litre. Gas-oil about the same.

Electricity £0.115/kWh, depending on tariff.

Good here, innit?

I am in Ontario Canada and we use a consumer network to find the lowest prices (CDN$/L) reported through the network of drivers. Posting to the site is random by various drivers who take the time to post. If you want an approximate in US$/USgal just multiply by 3.5 (our $ is getting too strong). I would use the pricing network when I was in business and would let the drivers know where the cheapest gas was located. This thread is kinda like the consumer network only more international. Good idea Peter and a network sometimes can keep local stations honest.

Regular gas runs about $3.49 a gallon here. We usually run about a dollar a gallon more than US prices. There is a refinery on the next island, but the whole thing is a racket of offshore deals and markups. Capitalism at it's best.

Welcome to the tropics.

Just paid Euro 1.63 per liter, or about US$ 7.56 per Gallon, in The Netherlands. PLUS... an ongoing road tax of about US$50 per month.
