Complaining About the Weather

07/09/2010 8:32 PM

NO! This is not about global climate change. This is about growing old in New England. Here we complain about the weather. In the winter , we complain about the cold and snow. In the summer we complain about the heat and humidity. On the one or two days with perfect weather we complain because we don't have anything to complain about.

Is it because I am growing old, or is it about the technology we have today to control the personal climate we live in? Right now, we are going through a typical New England July heat wave, hot and humid. As I write this, the sweat is dripping from my face, yet the AC is running full time in my house and smoke is coming off the bearings of my electric meter. I just returned from work, The factory where I work is air conditioned and maintained at less than 75 degrees F. not for our comfort, but because our processes are temperature sensitive. After work I jumped into my air conditioned car (the first one I have ever owned with a working AC, but that is another story)

All my life I have, until now, lived without air conditioning. Not in my home, not in my car, not in the factories where I worked, including 10 years in a die-casting foundry. Hot weather never bothered me. Now it does. Why?

Is it just because I am growing old and my body can't adjust as well to temperature changes, or is it because I have become spoiled by living in controlled climates.

No, it's because you are growing old and grouchy. OK, spoiled, too.

Acclimation or acclimatization is to blame. You've gotten used to the soft life.

If you, God forbid, were to ever go back to your old sweaty ways completely, you'd get used to it. Like it? Nope.

Grouchy, yes. But are we as a people prepared to live without the comforts of today's technology?

My neighbor and I were just talking about this the other night, over a drink. He was raised in Fla., I was raised in Conn., neither of us with air conditioning, we were of course out on the porch, sweating like pigs. Both of us remembering the sweltering summers as kids. It didn't really bother us because we didn't have a point of reference. As a kid, there was nothing better than going down to the hardware store during the summer and standing in front of the giant fan they had down there, boy that was living! At some point they invented shopping malls and my mom would take us there on really hot summer days, talk about the good life! Technology has certainly made our lives more comfortable, but better, I don't think so. I'm sounding like my Dad, but I have to say, kids these days don't know how good they have it, why, when I was a boy..............................

My body thermostat doesn't work as well as it used to. This may be age-related; I'm 61. This is less a problem where I now live.

Heh heh. i live in a place close to heaven i am sure. Never too hot, never too cold. Despite mindless growth, Bangalore has enough greenery to enchant one on a morning walk. When the hot parts of India are sweltering at >40°C(104F to you all) i have to wear a sweater during my morning walk . And the girls are getting younger and prettier. What a life !

So i meet other old coots on my walk, later at my club for a beer. We have to complain about something. So...no weather .. what next? Traffic (takes an hour to go 4 miles in a car, 45 minutes to walk), degeneration of the young people today (extravagance, cellphones, free love...)

Complaining is in human nature. Age has something to do with it, but not much. Just think...did we not complain against parental control in our teens ?

GA from me.

This is what I wanted to say. You said it.

Here at my place, in summer it reaches to 42 deg C, with some days very very moist, sweating. I am certainly uncomfortable, but not really complaining. I do not have AC at my home. I have AC for my office desk area, but no AC in workplace.

The complaining people, always say that "This year it is too hot". I say to them, "Every year we complain same sentence"

On the other hand last October I was in Netherlands for some 8 days. I never used any jacket or warm cloths at all.

Last 30th June... just 10 days back, I was at Khardung La, a point of highest motor able road of the world at 18380 ft for about an hour. I was wearing nothing more than a simple T shirt. (I will post the photograph tomorrow)

I am happy you have become young again ... And the girls are getting younger and prettier

Thanks for the GA. Well, it is all relative, whether one sees the cloud or the silver lining. i am an eternal optimist, so it helps. i am quite often in the company of young engineers, and not being their boss, can be very free and open with them.i insist that they do not addess me as 'sir'. It helps both to forget my age, and makes me feel young.

Re: Complaining About the Weather

After about 10 days of high-80s to mid-90s we were to get a short break today- only 82. My wife hates A/C because homes don't have as good of air circulation as offices, so she wanted to shut the A/C off and open windows with the fans on. It actually got to 85, but she was fine downstairs with a fan and 81 in the living room.

I was upstairs with a heavy-duty circulator fan and window fan in another room drawing some outside air in, but it was 89 up here. NO party here but had to be on the computer for some serious number crunching- lots of water used. Finally, my wife decided to turn on the A/C so the bedrooms would be cool by late evening. After an hour, it is down to 80 now and feels like 72.

Tornado- I am 60 so I know what your mean- we for get what it was like- back in the "good old days" when every day that it was hot and humid, all you had were fans and evening showers.

I think it's really a matter of being spoiled. We didn't complain back in the days before A/C, but today with A/C everywhere, we have gotten accustomed to it and our body mechanism has adjusted to it. Also being young, we had more options available, like going to the beach or lake for a dip. As long as work wasn't involved, heat could be better tolerated. In So. Ms. it is hot and humid and I complain. If I'm helping my son pour a concrete slab or I'm mowing the grass, I sweat and the heat doesn't concern me too much. A cold beer helps. I know I'm going to get dirty and sweaty, but thats what showers are for. When I'm in my woodworking shop, that's a different story. Tools, machines and wood get wet with sweat. You stick to everything and sawdust sticks to you. I then go inside and fool around on the computer, like right now. BTW, I was born and raised in New York City. The weather can be pretty miserable there in summer.

I lived in Nashua, NH for 11 years, having moved up there from the mid-Atlantic. Summers were wonderful, winters dreadful and way too long(until we found out that my wife was allergic to every tree in New England and we had to install air conditioning. The tree pollen was unreal.).

Nowadays, since I passed 60 years old, my comfort level is somewhere around 78°F. +/- 2° F., and the tolerance band is getting narrower by the day.

5 straight days of ~100° F last week was brutal here in the Shenandoah Valley.

"The Eskimo was quite happy and content to live in his igloo. One day the American marketing might came to improve his lot. They sold him the Heated House!. His meat started getting spoiled, so they sold him the refrigerator. Then his butter became hard in the fridge, so they sold him the butter-warmer....." .... ask Old Sitting Bull. Whether he had any climate problems...

Very nice. Really true.

The story you narrated must be sort of saying.

But here is real story: An NGO from India thought that the Adivasi's (tribes) from Andaman are suffering from cold. With good intention they distributed Sweaters to the tribe people. The people were very delighted, and started wearing it continuously, even during going to sea, going in the rains. Shortly they became victims of Pneumonia!

I've never been a fan of AC, a tremendous waste of energy in my opinion. Being from eastern Canada I am used to both extremes of weather and I hate the cold. Therfore I will never complain that it is too hot. Mankind has survived quite well without AC for long enough. Computers however don't get along very well when the thermometer creeps towards 100. In our new condo my wife and I have designated the smallest bedroom as the computer room/office and with two big gaming machines running in there the stressed out video cards may well dictate that we AC at least that room for the sake of our Hobbits. That or take July and August off from playing and actually go outside and see the world.

Otherwise don't complain when its getting to 40(C) because before you know it the temperature is -40 and you will be wishing for more heat.

This may sound wierd but if you eat alot of fruit (melon, peach, grapes, grapefruit) and less meat, cheese, eggs, milk during the hot months you will not feel the heat much at all. I'm 65 and this works for me very well. Come winter start the denser foods again and stay warm.

In Canada, a rather large country. There are two national sports: one is Hockey and the other is complaining about the weather. Go anywhere and ask about either and you will get many opinions. Very few will make sense, as there is no real answer.
