When you switch on the television and nothing comes on the screen but the red light on the switch is on. What is the problem?

the magic smoke has escaped your TV set. You need to find it, capture it and put it back inside.

Re: Red Light on Television/ majic smoke

Your television has, as i say, "flipped a chip". My tv did this but the only problem is when you turn off the tv, even at the switch, you have to use the 5 buttons on the front of the tv to reset it to the correct settings every time you turn it on, or look at a blank screen.

I have a piece of paper taped to the top ; power/menu/menu/+/menu. This is the code i figured out (after about half an hour of trial and effort) to bring the television back to the right setting to show an image. My televisions brand name is KONKA, go figure.

ofcourse i did not buy this tv. It was roadkill/obtainium or freegan, whichever you call it.

the majic smoke is contained in nearly every electrical device.

It is rumored to make these things work.

It is a well known fact that after you SEE or SMELL the majic smoke come out of an electrical device it will no longer work in most cases.

Snarkiness aside, I have this problem with my old 40" Toshiba CRT projection TV.

My solution is to unplug the TV for a few seconds and then plug it back in again. You'll hear some internal relays clanking about at first but then the TV will work fine. It happens pretty frequently and is not uncommon.

Re: Red Light on Television

My brother in law had this problem. After about a month of unplugging and retrying, he gave up and got a new TV. He gave me the old one.

I opened it up and looked over the circuit board. On inspection, I noticed that there were many cold solder joints and some oxidation and corrosion on some of the solder joints. These were at their worst near the incoming power. I went over the board and touched up all of the questionable solder connections and the TV worked.

My guess was that my brother in law's TV room, being in the basement of his house, was rather damp. This took its toll on the solder joints over the years that he'd had the unit down there and manifested itself in the intermittent power on behavior.

No, the problem was it was manufactured with lead free solder which has a higher melting point, does not wet as well, and tends to be very difficult to solder without generating cold solder joints. It also has a tendency to grow tin whiskers and short stuff out over time.

Nah, this was in the days before lead free solder. Thermal cycling, humid atmosphere and probably poor quality joints to begin with.

I will acknowledge that lead free solder is a pain, especially if your assembly house doesn't do it right.

Red = stop, Green = go. Is it that one make there? It is almost for sure, If you follow that light and see where it is located, that in the box inside is something wrong.

Probably under the glass window.

But do not open it !!!!! Take it from behind.

Your best option is to take the pilot (working red light) and replace the rest of the components around it.

I once did repair my TV but I had a draft training manual for technicians available. (the repairs lasted for about a year - and the price of all the components was higher than a new set - but i am DEY)

The only advice I can remember was about the high voltages inside the box.

What i really mean is that, When i switch the television on normally there is something to watch well, there is no picture on the screen but there is a red light just beside the start button. Do you think it has somthing to do with the fuse or another component?

Tell us what TV you have. Make, serial number e.g.. Some TV's have solder issues, others blow fuses, others have High Voltage issues. You can go to specific TV repair forums and will see that many same model televisions have the same kind of defects. Too much to continue with so little info. Most of the answers are not serious just because of the lack of information. My previous one too, sorry. Example: I bought, found, or.... a Nipkov Television with Image tube, LED, LCD ..in 1938. At least we can give it a better try. Thanks.

It is a Panasomic. I wasn't able to get the serial number but i will send it as soon as i gt it. I switched it on and the red light came on, pressed the channel button and the green light came on and a white light appears vertically across the screen and then goes off and the green light turns to red.

Well... it looks to me like it is time for the repair shop. Gone are the days when I could say "Looks like the horizontal oscillator tube to me". Hunting for a remote control for one of our sets, I came across a site which sells PC boards for various TVs. These boards had names like "Unobtainium Register Board" or "YouDon'tNeedToKnow Amplifier" etc.

I walked into class and handed in my homework. The teacher exclaimed "Billy!! You handed your homework in on time!! And it is all perfect!! What happened??" I replied "The dog ate my remote control."

It can't be the fuse, as the red light is on. If it were the fuse, the red light would be a black light.

Re: Red Light on Television

The problem seems to be either:

  1. Failure to read the instruction manual that came with the television, or
  2. Failure to understand the contents of the instruction manual that came with the television, or
  3. Failure to follow the instructions contained in the instruction manual that came with the television, or,
  4. Failure to fit batteries in the television's remote control unit, or
  5. Failure to renew spent batteries in the television's remote control unit, or
  6. Failure to point the television's remote control unit at the television's remote control sensor input, or
  7. Failure to keep the remote control unit's transmitter bezel and/or the television's input sensor sufficiently unobstructed or clean, or
  8. Some internal fault within either or both of the television and its remote control unit.

Sounds normal to get the red light when you switch on, it's in standby. Use the remote to switch on, if you lost it though, pressing the channel select or volume button might turn it on too (depending on the brand...)

The make and model are not available because the original poster is a doofus and likes to be the brunt of TV jokes! Even after pleas for more info the o.p. posted again with little to go on.

There's probably enough material here for "open mic" comedy night.

You probably have a bad power supply. I would suggest you google your problem, you will be amazed of number probable solutions.

I had the same problem with my LCD TV and fixed by replacing several capacitors in the power supply. Look at this website …..

mark sure your TV doesn't have a Standby mode... many new TV's, especially of the low profile variety (LCD, Plasma etc...) have a main power switch (usually a hard switch), and a standby/on switch (usually a soft switch)... you may have turned on the main power without actually turning on the TV.

Otherwise I'd say your next stop is the TV repair shop... where you will likely find out it costs as much as a new TV to replace the $.30 part that failed (I'm guessing)

Re: Red Light on Television

Basic possibilities include:

- Switchmode power supply won't start.

If it is a CRT screen, there will be static electricity on the screen, which tells you the power supply is running, but the TV signal is not coming thru.

- The childproof interlock on the controller has been accidentally set to stop switch-on.

After these, it gets more complicated.

Hmmm One of our TVs has a red light which goes "ON" when you turn the set off... and "OFF" when you turn the set on. Always has since it was new. Ours reads "MAXENT" on it. I wonder what the OPs television reads? Or maybe both TVs have psychological problems.
