Computers and Conspiracy Theories

03/15/2007 11:21 PM

I lost my computer to a live in boyfriend who took it over. My ex- bought me a Mac book for xmas & my Sister purchased a wireless airport for me. Problem: I live with a paranoid boyfriend and he insists that it is emitting harmful deadly rays(EMR) and that he can't be in the same room as the machine, I say he is full of it and paranoid. He goes on chapter and verse "government does'nt give you the truth - Nobel peace prize "Becker" etc. etc.etc.blah blah blah. Could you please enlighten me and let me know if there is any truth to this, and to what extent. If Im wrong I will take back every nasty thing I said to him. Please help me out here as he is making my life hell. I appreciate any feedback. Thank you for letting me vent. Pamela

One option is to upgrade to Boyfriend 2.0 with some new hardware, as the existing software seems to be corrupted.

It is true that a computer emits some RF. A printer some ozone, etc

But i have been living next to a computer for 35 years with no effect, beep, no effect, beep, no effect. beeeeeeep.

Hi Pamela,

The only Nobel Prize winner named Becker was an economist named Gary Becker. I doubt that he had anything to do with EMR research or computers.

my Sister purchased a wireless airport for me

I'd be interested to see that one .

(I lost my computer to a live in boyfriend), (I live with a paranoid boyfriend), (he is making my life hell)

Make life easier on yourself and sell him. Next time, take time to check the merchandise before you purchase your next boyfriend.

(Could you please enlighten me and let me know if there is any truth to this, and to what extent)

Don't worry about it. Most equipment nowadays are well shielded and, in any case, the levels aren't lethal. You'd get more harm being exposed to the sun than to a computer.

Does your boyfriend use a cellphone? or do you have a microwave? a radio? If he uses these things, tell him that he's being exposed to dangerous levels of radiation and maybe he'll leave you and your "deadly" equipment. Then you could go and find someone better.

Please can you enlighten me about this "Wireless airport" your sister bought for you.

Is your sister very rich? (I hope the name you used is a fake you never know who is about on the net). NSA, CIA, FBI, MI5, MI6, KGB, just name avery few. Then there are all the crooks.

Back to your boy friend, computers are safe so long as you follow the rules.

1) Keep all metal shielding in place (No plastic cases).

2) Use a flat screen monitor, tv type monitors used up close are a danger. Even more so if the are fairly old. Oh and it should be EMC. not EMR.

The faster a computer the more care needs to be taken, with how it is used. Like all electronics it will radiate a small amount of energy into the human body. Normaly this is not a major problem, but there have been documented cases where people have become sick from using electronic equipment. The main area of concern is the mobile phone, if it is used all day and particularly if used in a poor reception area it can cause harm, after so years of regular use. The reason that the reception conditions matter is that the phone automaticaly adjusts its power to compensate for the conditions. That is the power goes up if the recption is poor. Never use a phone in your car, even if a passenger. Unless it is a proper carphone with an external arial.

Micro wave ovens should be another cause to pause for thought if it is over five years old. Why? because the seals loose their intergrity with time. If in doubt get it checkled out. In short your boy friend has every right to be paranoid if he wants to be. Electrical engineers live to a lesser age than most others. Cancer rates are higher. People working on high voltage systems do get more diseases incuding heart related problems than most others. Be afraid very, very afraid. Part of why this may be is because highly charged particals may well be attracted to the high voltages. A cathode ray tube is a form of particle accelerater, it fires electron at the phospors. This produces photons (The light we see). So far no one has proverbly died of watching tv due to this factor. There can always be a first of course. Any blue tooth equipment should be trated with a truly hostile reaction. I mean fancy taking a part of the micro wave spectrum that is used for cooking food, and allowing it to be used for mass market goods the deliberately radiate into the human body. It is all about accummulated dose, not any single exposure. the power might be very low but the longer you live with it the more harm it will surely do. I hope this explains some of the facts as they are today.

One of my jobs in the Navy was RADHAZ (Radio Hazard) safety officer where I monitored the emissions of transmitters for safety reasons

All Electronics radiate some Radio Frequency Hazard.

The dangerous frequencies are in the HF band width and the Microwave bandwidth. At these frequencies, Cellular damage is possible depending on the power and distance from the transmitter. The HF frequencies are extra dangerous in that they cause other ungrounded objects to retransmitt the frequency and add power.

Power dissipates exponentially with distance from the transmitter.

Fortunately the digital revolution has reduced the power requirements of transmitters.

Some TV radio (station) transmitters require 100 meters safe distance (hundreds of Kilowatts) so they are fenced for safety.

Old CB Radios typically transmitted 25 Watts of power. The safe distance for a 25 Watt transmitter (depending on the frequency) was typically 1 meter (yard)

The first analog car phones were about 5 watts, and technology quickly progressed to cell phones at about 1 watt. Reception was good for 25 miles (safe distance was 1 foot for 8 hrs per day)

Digital technology typically uses 1/10 watt power. Again depending on the frequency a safe distance would be 1/200 of a foot for 8 hours, so unless you are using the antenna as a popsicle and you have illegally modified the frequency to the HF bandwidth, the transmitters in your home are safe.

(Because some heart monitor electronics are sensitive to RF transmissions you may not want to have someone with a Heart pacer in the room with your wireless transmitter)

Digital may reduce some power requirements, but and here is the rub the sharp pulses with very fast rise times actualy make the situation far worse. Also the pulse repetition frequecies used also have an impact. I used to work on aircraft radio systems including transponders and DME systems these both use micro wave frequencies and digital encoding with peak powers up to 1Kw for 20ms bursts. When doing ground based testing we had to keep above the aerial (antenna) inside the aircraft to avoid any health issues. I also worked on CB radios linear amps and many other electronic devices including tv's. I have also noted that using a mobile phone can cause localized heating of my ear. There are some dangers with all electrical equipment, some very minor others life threatening. X-rays from big tv's can be a problem (ok on older sets over 32 inch) EHT 25kv or more. Hard x-rays emit readilly from 40Kv or more. Hospital x-ray machines use 75Kv for good measure.

I am still alive, well hanging on by my finger nails, with several related health issues.

Solder flux fumes are a greater danger that people do not take as seriously enough. Lead free produts require stronger fluxes to work at all. I hate the useless stuff.

Nothing new is better, it just costs more and breaks one day out of guarantee.

That's it for now.
