Time traveller spotted

Time traveller spotted at Chaplin premiere?

Has the first real evidence of time travelling been found? A video on YouTube seems to think so.

On the DVD extras for Charlie Chaplin's 'The Circus', a woman is spotted in the background at the movie's premiere in 1928 and appears to be talking on a mobile phone.
Stunned by what he saw, Irish filmmaker George Clarke consulted experts on his find, and has since posted it on YouTube. He claims that the video has not been tampered with in any way.

The footage does seem to show a lady nattering on a mobile phone, but if you thought your phone reception was bad at normal times, we hate to think what it would have been like in the '20s.

Cynics have scoffed at the footage, asking, if you were a time traveller, would you openly show off the amazing gadget? Others have asked why you would go to a Chaplin premiere if you could go back to any point in time?

Clarke replied, "Who says the person in question went back to see the Chaplin premiere? How about, the person went back to an earlier period and got stuck there or was in town doing something else and just happened to stroll on by."

Here's the link. The interesting part starts at about 2:40.

Time Traveler?

At first glance it did look to me like she's holding a cell phone to her ear, but when I watched the close-ups and hit pause/play/pause repeatedly I could not spot any black cell phone, or any object for that matter, in her hand. Also, her fingers were moving and it looked more like she was scratching her ear or temple.

It did look like she was talking, but I think she was talking to the man in front of her (or maybe just talking to herself). Her pace exactly matched his, and her proximity to him suggested she was following him trying to keep up. Considering her age, she would have been raised in a time when women were subservient to men (i.e., 'the good old days' ) and would have been expected to follow along. If she were walking by herself, her pace would have been slower.

If this is really someone using a cell phone, what tower are they getting their service from?

Time travelers use sub-space communicators, so technically their cell phones don't actually need towers. (No need for batteries either, BTW, since they use Zero Point energy.)

How do I subscribe to this "sub-space communicators" service?

75% of the time, I can't walk or drive while placing a cell call without my POS phone dropping the call.

I can be looking right at or driving right by one of my carriers cell towers and I get a dropped call for cripes sake!

Yes, it couldn't be any ordinary cell phone (link) because there's no tower service. And if we suppose some advanced "sub-space" technology, then surely it wouldn't be some large bulky thing held by hand to your ear. It'd be very advanced and smaller, working without obvious obtrusive means. What's more, a time traveler would not want to be doing strange things in the open to attract attention and invite awkward questions. Moreover, we suppose this old lady (or man, as filmmaker George Clarke imagines) is an exotic time traveler, why not some younger more energetic person to undertake such an unusual trip?

Naaaw, the principle of Occam's razor is useful here: This is just an old lady walking along scratching her ear and talking to herself.

So that's where sue went next week when borrowed the KrisDel™ Time Machine. Del will be very upset and will probably withdraw borrowing privileges for this transgression.

Thanks for pointing it out!

Best place to look for time travelers is in a bank.

Think about it...

I can understand someone needing to ask for the numeric " day of the month " ....is today the 3rd or the 4th ?!?! But when they pause on the YEAR and wait for you to fill in the blank ??? TIME TRAVELER !!

Besides , they are ALWAYS trying that stupid " deposit a dollar and wait a few hundred years " trick.

:D

Why do you call the "deposit a dollar and wait a few hundred years" trick stupid? Sounds rather clever to me.

Although, not quite as clever as popping in and out of time to withdraw your earnings right before a market crash (causing it?) popping in a few months or years later to reinvest while the market is still down.....repeating as necessary over time to maximize the gain.

The problem (as I see it) is not so much going back, but getting home. Think about it - how could you get back to the precise momment you left ? I've had a few momments on the loo when timing has been critical. I can't stand there telling future Kris 'look what you're about to do' - he wouldn't react quick enough. A few microseconds after the event, and I'd have to slap myself.

No, this way lies madness, and I refused to do it.
