Is it a Palm Tree?

12/06/2010 8:20 PM

The other day I was driving my motorcycle in a suburban area of Buenos Aires and suddenly something caught my attention: a tall palm tree was growing among Eucalyptus trees:

A closer look unveiled a cell phone antenna concealed as a palm tree.

The stem is a regular antenna pole painted in brown, the leaves were made of metal sheets and painted green. As I haven´t seen anything alike before, just wanted to share the images of what I believe is a creative way of preventing visual pollution.

Quality of images is not THAT good cause I took them with my cell phone

It's an exotic plant called cellulus erectus mobilus americanis dollarsgalorus.

Or, cell phone tower ubiquitous.

Phenomenal rate of growth observed. Almost seem to spring up overnight.

OOOPS: wanted to edit an error but was timed-out ... "the leaves were made of metal sheets were painted green"

PLS replace the second "were" of this sentence by "and"

The leaves 'were' made of metal or 'are' made of metal might be a change to consider as well.

The second edit puzzled me, as the past tense of what was seen is perfectly correct and can/should, remain consistent throughout the post.

I.e. no edit required and no additional "corrections" necessary

Hi, thanks for the tip! Besides English is not my mother tongue, I also speak and write 5 more languages and every now and then I make these kind of mistakes. Greetings from Patagonia!

Old news but let them be, at least it is green. (in colour / color)

The idea came from this birds nest (bird apartment erection / construction)

Actually the wisdom behind the presence of this very tall palm tree among the other short trees is to be good guide for man, animals, and birds to mark a specific location as guide and not to get lost in the large forest.

Wisdom, isn't ?

There is a lot of these trees here in California, hundreds, and I don't know how many in the whole USA. These fake palm trees are telecomunication amplifiers. There are countless palm trees here in Southern Cal. They plant this fake trees among them, but you can tell right away the fakes from the real ones. Enjoy your new palm tree!

So you believe this to be "a creative way of preventing visual pollution"? I think it is neither creative nor preventing visual pollution, but I DO believe you must be fooling yourself: if it actually were preventing visual pollution it wouldn't "have caught your attention". Personally I think this is just another example of the worst possible kind of art-abuse.

Thanks for sharing it anyway.

I think it is neither creative nor preventing visual pollution, but I DO believe you must be fooling yourself: if it actually were preventing visual pollution it wouldn't "have caught your attention". Well, I respect but do not share your opinion. What caught my attention from a distance of 500 meters was that the "palm tree" was much taller than the rest of the trees that surrounded it. NOT the palm itself. We probably should find out if the human being REALLY needs to be connected by cell phone, bluetooth, wi-fi, etc 24 / 7 no matter where he is. As this seems to be what everyone wants (or at least a wast amount of people), until new technologies appear, telephone carriers will continue installing antennas. If you ask me, I prefer the "artistic" version of the antenna rather than the bare pole with all the crap on top of it. Another good question could be why cars are painted in so many colors instead of being black (as H. Ford once made them) if it just a means of transportation? Shirts? No need to use colors or patterns, just make them olive green, as used for decades in China? Just a question: are Andy Warhol´s paintings of Campbell soup cans also art-abuse to you? Thanks for sharing your opinion anyhow!

I do not think that the phone conpanies thought about this poles as work of art. They just tried to camouflash these antennas so they would not be so obviuos. Maybe the people that made these things, in their minds they were doing something artistic. Who knows! As long as they serve a purpose, who cares what they look like? as long as they are not planted in my front yard!

Re: Is it a Palm Tree?

OK, I won't be tempted into a discussion on what is or is not art. On second glance I may have overreacted slightly, sorry for that, I was not trying to be rude. I just hate the half-heartedness of such cheap attempts to disguise the ugly consequences of our apparent social ~and commercial~ needs. And I stick to my opinion that this palm tree does not prevent visual pollution, it rather emphasizes it. (Of course that too is a possible 'function' of art, but in that case the leaves would probably have been flashing fluorescent pink...) Wether art or not, I feel this arty "solution" is just too obvious, too easily found, too risk-averse. But I agree that this may just be a matter of taste. And then again: there is no telling good art from bad if the latter would not exist...

Hi, no bad feelings.... just wanted to share something I had not sen before. If you ask me if I prefer an antenna disguised as a pine or palm tree instead of a bare pole with all the crap on top. Some people drink Coke, while other prefer beer. Who is wrong: no one, i guess! Just a matter of taste!

The motivation for art is not the defining characteristic.

What defines art, and makes it relevant, are both subject and technique.

Typical - blame me.

Someone says "good art and bad art" and it's all my fault?

Alright; I'll be "technical";

But it is a fairly crap choice of tower for an ersatz palm. They should use a 'taper line pole', but maybe it's a preexisting sewer breather.

And I don't think "metal leaves" is clever in a high wind area.

So there, and I'm putting this "on topic"!

I think that multifunction artificial trees could be both beautiful, and functional... adding to the grid, pumping water, providing shade, and perhaps comms towers. I think that they can be a form of vertical axis wind turbine. Perhaps they can even be made from recycled components and materials. (ie car alternators, recycled wood, fibers, plastics, etc.) and wire forms for the 'leaves' with membranous materials as skins. (recycled coroplast political signage)

and in an effort to stimulate green growth, perhaps we can spread recycled politicians on the soil. we will have to test for efficacy.. don't want to poison the ground.

Its a higher calling.... or set of priorities that make coordination less important, provided it has the "look and feel" of victorian age tech.

Of course it is Chris. Not unlike wildebeests culling out harems, or Goth where said harem is conned into being unattractive to competing males.

BTW have you been here?

Looping back to Roman courtyards are we?

"translucent"? that's an opaque Chinese silk underskirt (or would've been back then). But yes - a nicely turned ankle was rather racy (back then).

Did you ever catch my link to the this guys work?

I think he's saying; some say being "functional" is justification for being ugly.

i.e. the barbarians that aren't talented enough to see the aesthetic choices in functional engineering.

I presume it's just ruminating on the original in contrast to your efforts.

But I could be wrong.
