"Geaux" forces the pronunciation "zho"; "gaux" is the hard "g." (As in Margaux Hemingway, who was named for the wine.) But then Cajun differs somewhat from the mother tongue. (I just had to work a tongue into this; it's not really a criticism.)

Ah, thank you. But now I'm thinking I should have named my son Grigio (hard 'g', after the wine, of course).

There is a great Website on Cajun jokes, I think out of Lafayette. (Mom grew up around there, and CR4 "netmaker" is from thereabouts or a bit more coastal.)

Now for a bit of Italian? "Grigio" is most closely rendered in English as "greejo" (not "greejio"), I think. In both French and Italian, i or e after c or g dictates the "soft" pronunciation; a, o, or u makes it "hard." Spanish is similar but not quite the same.

You are correct, but most Americans will pronounce it "greejio". As most will pronounce bruschetta with a 'sh' sound instead of the preferred 'sk'.
