Where is the CR4 help facility?

04/09/2007 1:22 PM

The FAQ list does not answer all of the questions that users of this unique facility might have but there does not appear to be a place that a person can go to ask questions about CR4 itself.

In my case I have become convinced that a login will get cancelled after a certain period of time even if a person is actively composing a post or other wise involved with the site.

It also appears to me that if one attempts to post a message as a guest there is a limit to the size of the message.

Also why does the <> sequence often appear at the begining of a paragraph?

I the above statements true? If so, what are the exact parameters of these restrictions/phenomena.

<>

<>If there is a help facility please point me to it and if I have missed something obvious please try to minimize my embarassement.

<>

<>
Thanx for helping me out on this.

Hi

Our FAQ (and probably most of them out there) are not as complete as we would like, but your question is probably best explored like this, as a dialog. So on to your question...

First, some questions:

  1. What browser (and OS) you are using?
  2. Are you using the "editor" which has a "toolbar" like this:
  3. Are you pasting in pre-written text from another application?

I've personally tested the editor pretty well under different browsers, but only on Windows platforms and only using later versions of IE and Firefox. Some people have reported problems with one browser that were cleared up by using the other browser. On non-Windows platforms I recommend Firefox; we know that works well on Macs, for instance.

If you are using the editor then what you describe with the <>'s is pretty strange.

Also, there may be a limit to the size of posts, but it is pretty big and I don't think anyone has hit it yet. (Please folks, don't try to find the limit by posting bigger and bigger messages...) There may be practical size limits for things like spellcheck, and if you are located far from our servers in Texas then bandwidth may start to play a role.

Let me know more about your situation and we'll see if we can find a solution.

Thanks
- Mark

Thanx for the prompt reply.

  1. I am using netscape 7.2 under Windows XP
  2. I am using the editor with the tool bar you have included in your reply
  3. I only started pasting from another application when I starting copying my posts to NOTEPAD in case my post gets rejected. Which seems to happen when I somehow seem to get logged off during the middle of my session and without my knowledge. In that case I login again, reply to the same message and then copy my original post to the editor. Sometimes I am able to just do a ctrl-V without copying from the NOTEPAD.
  4. I am located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. 1,100 miles straight north of Salt Lake City. I have the highest speed cable connection that our cable company offers.

Thanx for taking the time to answwer my questions.

We have not had the best luck with Netscape. Most things with the editor work ok but it was not as solid as Firefox. If you have the ability to try that, please do. IE would also be good to try.

As for the logging off part, we use login cookies that should keep you logged in pretty much forever, so that is also a bit weird. (There is a time limit for making a single post, but it is something on the order of 8 hours or so, which I assume is not what you are seeing.)

Thanks
- Mark

I have a curiosity my self while writing a reply to a post the whole thing just up and deleted its self. I was just going to click on the button when nearly an hours work vanished. It was very frustrating. I never bothered re writing it. I use IE7 rev 2. with WIN XP SP2. I had just spell checked it all and woosh gone.

When I think I'll be typing a long answer (which is rare), I type everything up in MS Word. Then I log in to CR4, open the editor and paste. I'm out in less than a minute.

When have to think my answer through before actually typing, I copy the thread into Word and log out of CR4. I work on my answer and paste when I log in again.

It's not that much of a hassle since, as I said, I don't do it very often. But if you like giving long answers or posts, this would be the way to do it.

I've never experienced being logged out though.
