Turnbuckle should be very challenging involving both left and right hand threads.

V-belts ?

There are specifications for belts , pulleys , determining the pitch etc

Get the specs, make some assumptions and calculations and take it from there.

Also visit a shop or outlet selling drives and obtain some ideas about shaft sizes , key-ways etc.

Good luck!

I made a ball peen hammer with a nice cross hatched pattern on the handle back in high school shop class..............all steel. It was ball peen on one side of the head, and flat head on the other. The handle threaded into the bottom of the head. That was a fun project.

For fun ok. If to use for real application, the threaded joint between handle and head would be dangerous, right?

That depends on what you want to use it for, but for a project using a lathe, making a ball peen hammer as kramarat suggested covers quit a few functions of the lathe, simple, quick and can be useful, depending on what you want to use it for.

I think it should be mandatory for anyone that designs products should be familiar with all the equipment involved in producing the product, it wold save a lot of headaches in the production shop, at least that's my own opinion. DJ

Mechanical engineers don't operate lathes or other machine tools in the real world. I am guessing the school wants you to demonstrate the different operations that can be accomplished on a lathe. A mechanical engineer needs to take into account that something can be made on a lathe before he can design it. You can demonstrate different types of operations, such as straight turning, taper turning, threading, facing, boring and drilling. These are all basic operations done on a lathe.

I would hope that every mechanical engineer has actually operated a lathe and a mill, at least during his/her training. Having actually made a few things makes a huge difference in the understanding of the design of machine parts... I suppose that successfully programming a turning center and a CNC mill for a few parts would qualify...

Make a spinning top , aim for highest moment of inertia with lowest mass, make it very aerodynamic, Make it high precision with very smooth pointed tip. make provision for launching with wound string, make a Guinness world record of longest spinning top.

An interesting subject is the high finishing you could get in lathe with modern tools.-

Is not my fault if i was kicked out everytime i got close to the lathe.Anyway, i read works about what smooth surface you could expect using cutting tools, better if you can buy those and make some experiments differents speeds, differents cutting depth,..to get differents roughness, down to 2μ.Perhaps students don't find this so challenging..OK,what about this:http://www.metalurgicasciacca.com/proceso.htm.-

Which poses a question; since you got "kicked out everytime i got close to the lathe.", have you used one?

Make a small scale model of a quick to assemble structure frame model of a multistory building. Fast buildable assembly house.

How about an instrument knob. 0.375" OD x 2.25" long, knurled for 1/2" on one end, 5-40UNF x 1/2" deep female threads on the other end, 6061 aluminum, black anodize or paint finish.

Build a machinist vice...that was a freshman course requirement where I went to school.

You get to use a lot more than just a lathe which you will probably need to do to make any kind of a useful project. If you don't want it to be useful then just turn make the egg as someone suggested...that's a challenge! (oh yeah, make the egg out of cast iron just to be sure you know how to handle that stuff)

Oh, I forgot. The egg rattles and guess why? Yep, it can be screwed apart and there is the next one.One opens with a left twist, the next with a right twist. And yes, it has to be done in over time not during working hours.

Some could have so much fun or at least the time to do so.

How about making a Towers of Hanoi puzzle? Discs of various sizes, each drilled with a hole in the centre to slip over the posts. The cylindrical posts are threaded at one end to fit into threaded holes on the base. The base is milled flat with a fly cutter.
