Air Volume Tank

09/17/2011 7:27 AM

WE ARE FACING A PROBLEM WITH ONE OF OUR CONTROL VALVE ITS OPENING TO SLOWLY AND WE INSTALLED VOLUME BOOSTER RELAY ON THIS VALVE STILL ITS TOO LATE TO OPEN, WE ARE HAVING A LOGIC SAYS THE VALVE SHOULD OPEN IN 2 SECS , SO PLEASE HELP ME OUT WITH THIS PROBLEM , WILL THE AIR VOLUME TANK WILL HELP TO OPEN THE VALVE FASTER, THE GAUGE ON THE VOLUME BOOSTER SHOW PRESSURE DROPS WHEN THE VALVE TEND TO OPEN

Do this first:

1. Check to see that the ALL CAPS button on our keyboard is unlocked. If so, you should get lower case font instead of UPPER CASE font when you type.

2. Once you are sure that ALL CAPS is unlocked, pry off the Caps Lock button on your keyboard.

3. Throw away the Caps Lock button.

Plz do mention the type of valve:

Solenoid operated Ball Valve

Diaphragm Operated Ball Valve

Pneumatic Actuated Globe Valve etc.

Now check for the valve response time as the electronics response time will always be in milliseconds. It's only the electromechanical devices line valves which respond little slower for many reasons which include design consideration to avoid chatter.

If nothing helps you then pls contact valve supplier to suggest a better option. One thing you mentioned is that "OUR CONTROL VALVE", so can I presume it to be linearized valve with positioner????

In today's economy there are many pneumatic engineers and technicians looking for work. You or your boss should hire one of them to your company. This could just be a contracted repair job, consultancy or maybe even a new position in your firm. They should be able to identify all of the critical parts in your pneumatic system by inspection. They can then determine if your valve is getting the correct voltages and/or pneumatic pressure to operate in a timely manner. If these controlling energies are inadequate they can then trace back to identify why insufficient controlling signals are happening. If the controlling energies are adequate they will then investigate why the valve is operating too slowly.

This is how a qualified person solves any technical problem.

Make sure that the pneumatic control tubing is no smaller than the port sizes. If there is a pressure regulator, you may be able to set it higher, so long as you don't exceed the actuator rating.

How large is the valve and what type? What type of actuator?

Imartin,

Is this control valve used by a anti-surge compressor system?

is there any positioner installed in the control valve?

Can you show us some drawing with the pneumatic scheme?

Regards

JP

Assuming that the valve actuator is being controlled by the output of a PID loop, check the tuning parameters to ensure you have the fastest response to a change in the process variable.

There is also the issue of "stiction"; resistance of the valve's plunger through the valve packing. Did the volume booster relay help with the response time? If so, a stiction problem it may be. If such is the case, physically inspect the valve you should.

If you could send a photograph of this valve with all the tubing shown, it might help us to diagnose your problem. A booster tank should help any air-to-open valve open faster, but all the air pathways (this includes boosters and other in-line devices as well as tubes) flow freely enough for your application.

It appears to be pneumatic control valve. Check whether you use dry air of at least -30 degC due point. Check air pressure, whether it can be improved by changing to higher size supply piping. Check for air leaks at all connections.

What type of actuator it is? Cylinder piston, diaphragm or rack & pinion? Check whether it is designed for available air pressure for the size of valve. Check whether differential pressure across the valve is higher than design.
