Sensor = Can detect wood, steel or movement

10/11/2011 9:50 AM

Does anyone know of a Sensor that can detect, steel, wood, or Aluminum?

In other words if I mounted this sensor in the frame of a door, could it detect the distance the sensor is from the door, the type of wood or metal it is & if the door opens or someone slides something in between the sensor detects this & sends a signal? If so, where can I find the technology, or what technology would this be called. Thanks

There's stuff like this.

I know of no sensors that will identify types of wood. Metal, sure.

Hi Santa800,

Look at Inductive Proximity Switches they might do what you want. With reference to "sliding something between sensor this might be a function of how far you "gap" the sensor.

Best regards,

John

You are trying to marry several technologies. The distance a sensor physically is from a material is either a sonar type pulse or other reflective wave technology. The "type of wood or metal it is" or better stated, the "density of a material" is a different technology. Sliding something between the sensor and the door frame or the door opening are pretty standard magnetic proximity switch schtuff. I do not believe a sensor exists that has all of these capabilities. Check LynDoor Industries.

Hai Goodday

A Passive Infrared sensor (PIR sensor) is an electronic device that measures infrared (IR) light radiating from objects in its field of view. PIR sensors are often used in the construction of PIR-based motion detectors.

PIR sensors allow you to sense motion, almost always used to detect whether a human has moved in or out of the sensors range. They are small, inexpensive, low-power, easy to use and don't wear out. For that reason they are commonly found in appliances and gadgets used in homes or businesses. They are often referred to as PIR, "Passive Infrared", "Pyroelectric", or "IR motion" sensors.

Some of this would be difficult to do even if the items to be detected were on a conveyor, with the materials of similar sizes so that the distance from sensor to material does not vary much. Discriminating between aluminum and steel is easy via a magnetic sensor (combined with a contact-free object sensor, like IR). But discriminating between maple and oak (one dense wood and another dense wood) is quite difficult. There is no single sensor that comes close to dong this, even for use on a conveyor belt. Vision systems can discriminate wood grains, sometimes. But none of this will work well with a human carrying out a pieces of variable sizes through a doorway.

Wood grain discrimination.

The above is one of many Google results for "vision system for wood grain discrimination"

LynDoor Systems New Paradigm Technologies Group, LLC can probably come up with something for you. This thread just hints at their capabilities.
