A desert cooler is a cloth bag for holding water. The cloth is pretty tight, but a small amount of water leaks through to the outside surface, where it evaporates and thereby cools the whole bag.

Deserts are pretty dry, and thus the wet-bulb temperature can be considerably cooler than the dry-bulb tempersature; such as 20°C vs. 40°C. The desert cooler scheme will cool the whole bag of water to near the wet-bulb (lower) temperature.

(Hey, Google--send people over here!)
(I wonder how long it will take them to find this thread....)

People have tried to help, now it's time you looked yourself.

If you want to learn you have to do the work yourself otherwise the information doesn't sink in.

Go Google it!!!!!!!! This isn't the reference library.

Try swamp cooler, although Tornado's description would be the original desert cooler.

A desert cooler, also called a swamp cooler, evaporative cooler and other nom de plumes, is a device that cools the air thru, you guessed it, evaporation....

Singh - you living in Punjab and India and I am surprised you do not know what is a desert cooler. Please go to your market selling Fridges/Air conditioners/Cookers/Micro waves/ TVs/VCRs/DVD players and you will find HUNDREDS of Desert Coolers on sale.

It only works in hot punjab areas of Pakistan/India/Afganistan/Iran/Iraq where the air in hot summer days are dry. It is a box with shit-of-leaves bonded together . I do not know the english word for this material but in local it is called "Khaus ki tatti". You should know what "khaus" is. Water is trickled down with perforated 1/2" pipe , damping/wetting the khus material and the Blower blows the hot outside air via this khus-blanket to the room cooling the room and making you feel like you have an air conditioner in operation at low temperature setting.

This Desert cooler cannot work in areas near the Ocean because of high humidity.

Now please go , buy one, dismantle it and copy it for your HOME WORK!!!

The English word for "Khus ki tatti" is VETIVER ROOTS. They make a mat out of this and put this inside the cooler with a Fan behind.

Dear Mr.Yatendra Singh,

Your question what I understand is " WHAT IS A DESERT COOLER.? HOW IT IS WORKING.? "

If so the DESERT COOLER is to blow UN-SATURATED, OUT SIDE HOT AIR with Low RELATIVE HUMIDITY (while the wet bulb Temp. is low) in to a room through a highly porous wet cloth or a thin felt like thing and in this process the blown hot air is cooled and simultaneously picks up moisture and this moisture will be invisible to human eyes and thus the room becomes cooler than out side temp and will be COMFORTABLE inside the room.

The principle involved is EVAPORATIVE COOLING and during HOT and RAINY DAYS this desert coolers WILL NOT BE EFFECTIVE as the out side air is highly saturated before blowing and increases the uncomfortable nature.

When the blown air picks up moisture from the wet surface - it will remove 540 K.Calories of heat/Kg. of water (Latent Heat of Evaporation of water at atmospheric pressure) from the hot air entering the room.
