Auto Start Wiring for CAT 3508C (Remote Starting)

12/08/2011 2:43 AM

I have a new CAT 3508 engine. The electronic control panel has an auto start function where the engine can be started remotely. I just got the schematic diagram from the local CAT representative. However, it's difficult for me to interpret the diagram and figure out the connections needed for auto start function.

The purpose is to be able to start and stop the engine from a button located further away from the engine control panel (not genset standby feature).

I have asked local representative but there is no feedback yet.

Appreciate if some kind soul here would be able to give some pointers on how to connect the wiring.

Is there an electrician at the facility?

Unfortunately, we don't have an electrician as most of our equipments are mechanical. We only have mechanics around. Do you need someone to check something?

The facility needs someone to design and install something. The forum now knows that resource is absent, which is a useful piece of information.

Unfortunately, your link gave only a bunch of Web marketing crap, instead of a legitimate schematic of your installation. What you want to do should consist simply of a normally open push button and two wires.

Sorry about the ads. Just ignore it and download the schematic will do. Yea, I know I need a switch and wires. But how do I connect these things?

With all due respect to Solar Eagle, I believe that helping someone connect "two wires and a button" is fraught with danger because of its potentially life threatening result. We have no way of knowing if the button is located in or near a classified area, if the wires are protected from accidental insulation damage leading to a short circuit and an inadvertent start, if there will be any kind of safety/maintenance interlock, etc. It is just too easy to imagine someone bumping into the unshielded button and causing a start when mechanics are working on the engine or the generator and anything connected to its output. I hope the OP Googles on how to do this safely.

The drawing shows emergency stop pushbutton and also Remote start stop rotary switch for customers. See GRID G5.Please connect the emergency push button and the remote control switch as per the circuit shown.

The system will work for remote start/stop and emergency shut down

Yes I agree with ramvinod the remote start is clearly shown at G5 on second page with circuit diagram & It is definatly a must to include the emergency stop as well at the remote start/stop location.

I would even sugest to put a lock out stop as the emergency stop button as a saftey so it will stop machine from being able to be started untill it is reset.

It is not 2 wires required from what I see it will require a minimum of 6 wires to conect it, unless you want to join the wires at the switch as shown in the diagram in that case run 8 wires but I don't think this would be needed.

if you are unable to read the diagrams properly as is indicated by not being able to see that part of the diagram I would advise you get a competant electrician to install the remote start/stop & emergency stop for you as a small mistake often costs a lot of money to fix
