The photograph actually shows the device up-side-down.

The thin arm protruding to the right is actually flat on the "bottom" side.

In use, one would grasp the device with thumb and forefinger in the depressions on each side.

It came from an auto parts supply house and it was free.

It's noon where I am, and time for the final clue.

The finger depression on the opposite side contains the name Gates.

Before you rush off to search, it isn't in any catalogs I've looked at.

Nothing is for free! In order to inspect the groove on the belt, it looks like you have to remove the belt from the engine? lay it flat on the bench? There has to be an easier way! It is not easy to remove the belt on some cars! You can hardly stick your hands in there! Just replace the belts as recommended in the Manual! Keeping the belts tight and well tensioned helps to make them last. You can buy belt treatment liquid?

No. The belt can be tested in situ. All you need is room to get the guage on the inside of the belt. No need to remove it.

By the way, what was the prize? You said "Doorman" won the prize! Something free?

I never heard about a belt groove gage. I always went by the looks on the belt and age. I never had a busted belt! Hoses are usually the ones that bust!

Look at it this way.

If they give away some brightly colored trinket that you can use to test your belt and find that the trinket says "time to replace", Gates will sell enough belts to pay for the trinket campaign.

You get the prize. The top is flat and if you can see it above the tops of the v grooves Mr. Gates thinks the belt is due for replacement.

It's an all expense paid tour of the LynDoor™ Factory of the Future, due for completion in 2199.

Who doesn't like a Busman's Holiday!

I am hoping this is a trip for two? I have one of Doorman's Chicks (a likely candidate for a tour companion) checking the belts of the car as I type this out...

Oh, wait... 2199? That isn't anytime soon.

I'm not going to stop her! The checking of the air in the spare tire is worth the price of admission!

That was a tough one... I 've got cars much older, than Serpentine Belt users. I do have a V-Bert Measuring length tool hanging in my garage, with 1/2" dust on it.

On with the game...

Here's a tool that'll work on any style belt.

larger image

Automotive V-belt Tension Gauge (91107)

$31.95

Add to Cart:

  • Model: 7401-0071
  • Shipping Weight: 1lbs

I have one of these. They're cool. It actually clicks when the belts tension is measured. The green thingy sticking up is the indicator hand. There are scales on both sides that indicate pounds/kilowhatevers of tension.

A gauge for measuring if a belt is 'worn out' or not?

My gauge consists of when the rubber and fuzzy stuff starts coming off the belt and it wont carry its load any more then its worn out!
