Left, Right Hand Drive.......??

04/04/2012 3:44 AM

When we say, left hand or right hand drive, what does it mean..? Are we referring to the side of the road we drive, or the side of the vehicle where the steering wheel is located....?? Norm.

Right-hand-drive vehicles are designed to run on the left-hand carriageway of the road, and vice-versa.

Ah but he's in the Southern Hemisphere.
It simply refers to which side of the vehicle the driver sits (assuming he's going to face forward and not be inverted)

What about people with only one arm ? Then there's the handedness issue, and I haven't even got start on people who text and munch a burger while driving.

I've considered and posted here in exactly 5 minutes .

In Americas and Europe [excep UK] is Right Hand drive as the side of the road to keep in driving [say in 2 way drives] Driver sits on the Left while keeps the vehicle on Right. All the Passanger Doors are on the right side.

Driver seats are designed such that driver cannot sit inverted.

The smiley things indicated it was a light hearted joke. No matter, I've no wish to further the issue.

Main reason I popped in was that I was fairly sure you had missed a few countries in your earlier post. Turns out there were more European 'right hand' than I had thought. Can't vouch for anything on the site I checked, but it may have some value to the original question.

I have a few good jokes and comments that I could pass and to use a smiley would still not make them acceptable to some nationalities and be accepted as a light hearted joke.

Never mind , I have dealt with it in an appropriate way.

I have taken appropriate action and you will hear in due course what the outcome is.

I asked because I thought that there might be something to learn about why someone would make a complete a$$ of themselves for no reason apparent to the other 99% of the forum. You have now removed any doubts.

I'm sure it's something about as sensible as the insane hatred that various ethnic groups have for each other, for no presently apparent reason.

It's easy.

Put another rear view mirror above the back window.

Now put the car in first gear turn around like you are going to back up,

only instead of going backwards, drive forward by looking into the new mirror.

There are a few things that do get tricky though. Like going to pull the trans into second gear, and finding out you used the wrong hand, and opened the door. And the pedal closest to the transmission tunnel is now the clutch, not the gas.

And about that "smart" lever for the turn signals, wipers, high beams, washers, horn, cruse control, and whatever else they can think of, lets just say the wipers will be used more often than you planned.

I don't want to think about shift patterns on a big truck.

Re: Left, Right Hand Drive.......??

You can blame the French for this one. It's all because Napoleon was left-handed, so the French marched on the other side of the road to everyone else. They then drove on that side of the road (the right so that their left hands were closest) because they'd got used to riding on that side. Everyone else rode and then drove on the left side of the road, so their sword arms - which most sensible nations insisted for practical reasons was the right hand for everyone - were closest. This meant you could take a swipe at your enemy as he passed.

Originally the driver sat in the middle.

The Yanks followed the French to the right with left hand drives because of the War of Independence when they decided they hated the British and would do anything to be different.

Left hand drive vehicles are the ones you don't want in UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Absolutely, although before the French changed it the Romans formalised "driving" on the Left. Although most societies that evolve a side drive on the Left naturally so, as English Rose mentioned, you keep your weapon arm towards strangers on a road.

I've heard different stories about why Napoleon ordered the change to driving on the Right. As well as the left-habded explanation, it was also one of the very few things you could do to demonstrate a change of government. Napoleon wanted (allegedly) to show everyone he was in charge now so forcing people to drive on the other side was the one thing that affected the most people.

... and as for what he did to Dutch surnames......

Oddly enough, when I lived in Japan I found I could parallel park better than I could in the states. Shifting felt more natural as well.

However, I still flip the wipers when getting ready to turn every now and again...and it's been 12 bloody years!!!

But that depends on the make of car! Most European cars (I drive a Skoda and have access to a Ford) have indicators on the left and wipers on the right. For some reason the Japanese/Korean cars have these reversed. My local garage has a Hyundai as a courtesy car and I fall for it the second time I go for the indicators each time I get in ....

G'day English Rose, as you say a lot of the earliest cars were controlled from the centre with a tiller. I don't know the first right hand drive English car but i did read about Henry Ford's early attempts to make a car. I thought it was in Hemmings but a search couldn't find it.

Basically it said some of Henrys early ( experimental ) models had the gearbox at the front and the controls on the right as per convention. He discarded this idea and turned the motor around but then found that the exhaust pipe interfered with the steering column. Rather than re design the engine with all that that would entail he simply switched the steering column to the other side. As the roads were mostly single lane tracks it didn't matter. By this time he was up to the letter 't' with his experimental cars. He thought he could go into production with this one, the rest you can guess.

But even then they have rules on the roads, though seem to be having no rules.

And more important: It is obligatory to have a prominent Sign on back of the vehicle to show that the vehicle is opposite side driven.

The terminology in India is different. The driving is called "Right hand driving" all right, but cars with the driver on the left (as in USA) are called "Left hand drive" cars. They needed to have caution boards as you have shown at the back, saying "Caution - Left Hand Drive"

Now, of course, these are not allowed to be sold in India.

"...the us post office does use left hand drive vechicals (sic) for delivering mail"

You've got that backwards! In the USA, the standard driver sits on the LEFT side of the vehicle and drives on the RIGHT side of the road. US Post office vehicles (as well as street sweepers and some refuse trucks) commonly have RIGHT hand drive either for reaching into mailboxes or for better visibility.

Go out on the street where you live after making sure that someone puts and "R" on your right hand for you, check again any cars you see, as you obviously cannot tell your left from your right!!

Is there right hand and left hand upholstery for the seats?

What about the rear view mirror, or is that ambidextrous?

Hi Norm

We drive on the left side of the road (the right side) because other wise the bananas would be bent the wrong way while they travel through the roundabouts. It has to do with centrifugal forces a bit like water going down the drain left and not right way around.

We on the Island get it all the time mate. It's shocking how such a simple 'misguidance' can cause such havoc. It's mostly the young dudes that think they can't do wrong and trust their autopilot and suddenly have me in front of them. It's been very close at times but one is prepared for such incidents. Not much space left when you come down to Arcadia.

Must have been a stinker over town today or why do you ask?

Say G'day, Ky.

As majority of people were right-handed they located the gear on the left side of the driver. Then to see clearly the road and avoid accidents from oncoming vehicles they drove on the left in UK. But I don't understand why Americans chose the otherway.

When I saw this I thought it was going to be about conveyors.

Well then on a different note:

When discussing right and or left hand drive of any kind of conveyor. When standing on the end of the conveyor where product is moving away from you, right hand and left hand drive refers to which side the gearmotor is mounted on the conveyor, unless the gearmotor is mounted underneath.

What we need is standardisation like "metrication"(MKS units) to avoid confusion not only in vehicles even in electricity supply voltage, frequency, mobile phone charger, socket outlets(receptacles) including currency.

It is a wonderful idea to have two steering wheels,2 brakes,2horns etc so that if one falls sleep or become incapacitated other can control the vehicle. In trains they have a "dead-man's handle" to stop the train if driver becomes incapacitated or falls sleep.

Get real. Dual controls would do MUCH more harm than good!

Not to mention the unnecessary expense.

I've never driven a backward car. I have driven a backward shift husqvarna motorcycle and it was maddening.

Is the throttle/brake/clutch pedal reversed, too?

Only south of the equator.

I had to cross that out, I was afraid I would offend someone.

Working those indicators and other column mounted switches could be a tad tricky.

Many people consider importing left hand drive cars into the UK because of favourable prices. If you are thinking about importing one yourself but are concerned.
