Nominate an Engineering Hero

05/12/2007 8:36 AM

Books are fantastic , but I'd like to know who CR4 contributors think worthy of a place in an Engineering Hall of Fame. It will be interesting to see who is suggested from all the different people on CR4.

I'm not going to explain my nomination , since anyone reading my link can judge for themselves and look further if interested by the taster. This is my Hero. Think of this as a quick 'straw-poll' . A reference link would be preferred for additions anyone cares to make.

You're so crafty Yuval. I could rattle on here , but I just glimpsed a modern one I like. Marc whatevers bubbling bass is cool (I prefer more late 60s type stuff generally - John Martyn excepted). Anyway , you enable me to mention rhythm and little things that please my mind.

Ah , the penny drops .Some Goblins are more pretty than others.

A Tea Steamer... Nice... This must be a nineteen-fifties paraphernalia. I love such stuff. It reminds me of the childhood I never had.

Aww.

Goblin Tea maid's were the butt of many jokes when I was a kid - unrepeatable word play on the name.. The hight of fashion in their time though. Now a bit like the flared trousers I keep quiet about.

Wouldn't it be interesting to know what everybody played with as a child. My favourites were the simplest , you can let the imagination take you anywhere with them. One of my early favourites (as you will have seen in a pic I posted ) was domino's which I used to stack up/ sort into different patterns and so on. Anything that could be used for a purpose other than intended really. Strange how young children always like the boxes. My wife is still speechless when I give her an empty box every year. Bless .

Relax HydroScot , I know where you're coming from. And yup , you do have some brilliant bridges and light-houses.I also know that Scottish engineers have more claim than most to having built the world. Where is that brilliant canal lift (the rotating one) ? - I honestly can't remember. It's got to be worth a picture or link.

It's a perfection of balance , and it looks really cool as well . Apparently the 'eye' in London can be pulled round by 2 blokes and a rope . I give the Falkirk lift better marks for appearance and function though.

I got reminded of this guy last night -Trevor Baylis. Using 'garden shed 'skills he gave the world a great device . So much was achieved by simply applying a bit of knowledge and ingenuity.

Quite a guy, I saw him interviewed a while ago. The interview was at his home & his workshop and garden were full of part finished projects including a car he was building from scratch.

The web site you linked to is fascinating, it seems to be aimed at school children but has a mass of great links.

.... that's precisely why he's 'great' and worthy of mention. Glad you liked.
