Do Candles Give Off Light? Or Are They Dark Suckers?

09/05/2013 8:48 AM

Does a lighted candle give off light from the wick? I.E. Does a lighted candle push darkness away from its lighted wick, or alternately, does a lighted candle suck in darkness in the immediate area of the flame, therefore creating a vacuum, where atoms collide freely, in turn, creating a lighted area in space vacuum

And, would this account for the blackness on the wick, below the flame, a storage area for darkness sucked in by the lighted wick. Is a candle in fact a dark sucker rather than a light giver?

The answers to those questions would be quite illuminating.

Is darkness enough of a 'thing' that it could actually be pushed, or pulled, or otherwise acted upon? Darkness is like cold, an absence of light where cold is an absence of heat. When you melt ice, you're not removing cold, you're adding heat. When you light a candle, you're not removing darkness, you're adding light.

The wick is dark as a result of the chemical reaction combustion.

There is a possibility here I see, to this answer. You state that darkness cannot be pushed or pulled! Yet, if I look inside the vacuum cleaner catch bag, it is clear that darkness can be sucked up, hence moved, as it is dark in the bag.

I would go with, 'candles suck in darkness'. Can we come up with an experiment to fully prove this?

Sure, test it: Produce darkness independent from light. Let us know how that works out.

Outer space is a greater presence of darkness, than a presence of light. The light being radiated from the sun, to planets surfaces and being seen as reflections from stars and planets in the night sky.

A dark hole is said to compress light and not release it again, therefore, a black hole consumes light. This statement leading to; by adjusting the very narrow band frequency of visible light, either up or down in frequency, will produce an absence of visible light, i.e. darkness. You cannot see X-ray, nor radio waves, gamma or UV. If a black hole can suppress light, it should be possible to create darkness in the absence of light as it is assumed here, that light frequency can indeed be changed

It gives it off.

The wick is where the wax is gassified (since first ignited) then the combustion of such gas generates heat around the wick, reaching temperatures that produce electromagnetic radiation between infrared and visible lght.

Darknes doesn't exist per se; you can't suck or push it away.

I really guess it is no joke. I started this as a teaser, but consequently, I have actually learned something new. So, maybe it is not a crack pot idea. It is now interesting.

Invisible laser beams can be intersected to produce light. Invisible=absence of light?

Extracted quote: Quantum mechanical framework. In the framework the light beam is composed of particles called photons, with energy E=h*nu (nu is the frequency of the EM wave), which when scattering off an electron may change frequency in the process, transferring energy to the electron or taking energy from the electron. For lower frequency photons, Raman scattering also changes the frequency of the impinging beam with a small probability.

"Invisible=absence of light?"

NO! Invisible=outside the spectrum or below the threshold energy that can activate a sensor cell in the human eye. There is plenty of light that we don't see!

I accept that the answer lies here in DKWarners, and James Stewart statement). If there is an absence of light which the human eye cannot detect, we perceive the non existence of light as 'dark', simply because we cannot 'see' it. Therefore, because humans can only see a defined spectrum band of light, we assume it is dark, therefore believe it is dark: absence of light.

As for a candle being a sucker of darkness or a giver of light, I shall let you decide. But for a 'daft' question, it certainly raised some interesting replies and more than I imagined.

Off the wall? Yes. Crazy, perhaps! Did I learn something new? Yes indeed. And I think 35 other people learned something too! Thanks for the inputs.

If a candle were removing 'dark', then in a closed room the candle would only need to be lit long enough to remove the existing 'dark'. Once the 'dark' has been removed, the candle would no longer be required. Since extinguishing the candle immediately makes the room dark again, then there must be an unexhaustible supply of 'dark' within the room. Where does all this 'dark' come from?

The 'dark' is preception as the human eye may only see a specific frequency of light. A gold fish can see infra red, so to a gold fish it is not dark. There is illumination. To you and I, we cannot see it with our human eyes.

Yet, with enhancing our limited vision perceptors, using night vision equipment, we can see light in darkness, limited it may be, but light emanates from darkness. It can be captured on celluloid film from X-ray, we just don't see the light frequencies.

(Tongue in cheek). As for where it all comes from. I think it comes from vacuum cleaner bags as I just checked the bag and it is still dark in there. It may also be immediately be released from the candle wick when the flame is extinguished. So this would imply that dark multiplies far quicker than light, that dark is far more abundant in the universe than light and dark is easier to replenish than light. And, dark will usually be found in cupboards, corners, and underneath stuff. Dark is powerful energy and very abundant. Dark matter? No not really, I just switch on a light.

An amusing description of ancient illumination techniques that reaks of naivity. At the same time I can see this metaphor of light sucking out the darkness being well used in literature to imply a certain mood to a situation. I expect that this analogy has been used by ancient philosophers, probably no recently than the medieval ages. I leave my supposition to those better trained in philosophy than I to correct or verify my guess.

Outside of colorful literature and philosophy, your idea of candle illumination techniques is completely daft.

#1: hot objects emit electromagnetic radiation. Just because you can't see it, does not mean it is absent. (Infrared is just as valid as visible light).

#2: yes the candle wick absorbs light more efficiently than does (white) candle wax, Einstein put this into mathematics way back in the early 20th Century.

#3: read Planck's work on blackbody radiation. The "perfect blackbody" absorber is also the "perfect blackbody" emitter of radiation. Read and please try and understand, and don't short out your obviously enormous brain trying to re-invent the universe. We pretty much already understand how and why it works, and it does not need a re-think in this area.

#4 read all of Faraday's works on the subject of candles, flames, and other works, and get back with us. Otherwise go away and stop yanking peoples chains. Light is more than just visible light, since we humans have advanced enough to "see" from the low radio frequency end of the spectrum all the way to the very high energy gamma ray and cosmic ray ends of the spectrum. There is a whole world of things you must learn and know before you elevate your egocentric self to pontif of science.

If you have a room full of dark, and, by means of a candle, light bulb, or LED, you suck it up, where does it go? Does the density increase dramatically? How about the pressure? Is there intensity, a scalar measure, to darkness, in the sense that a room can be twice as dark as another? Can I later release the sucked up darkness somewhere else? I'm think it would be a neat prank to release darkness in a lighted gathering, like a theatrical production, and watch people's reactions. Is there a velocity of suction? How long does it take the candle to suck up darkness from across the room? Is there a market for darkness? Perhaps Dark Knights or dark horses or hearts of darkness or dark thoughts need refills? It might be useful for burglars to carry darkness with them, to foil surveillance cameras, etc. How can we package and transport the sucked up darkness? There may be real opportunities here for engineer-entrepreneurs.

DEJA MOO! (I've heard this bull before)

See my post from 09/04/2007.

What goes around comes around, I guess.

To wit:Re: The Speed of Darkness
09/04/2007 9:38 AM
Perhaps we have it all backwards: a little humorous and inverted look at things seems to be in order, in keeping with the toungue-in-cheek spirit.
"Light" bulbs, are in fact "Dark Suckers".They suck the darkness out of a room when turned on.If you trace the wires from a ight bulb back to the source, you will find a larg generating plant spewing out darkness, which acculmulates on the other side of the globe. When a light bulb has inhaled all of the darkness that it can hold, it no longer funtions, but if you shake the bulb, you will hear a little bit of solid darkness rattling around inside, and may even see a trace of darkness on the inside of the bulb. This effect is easily observed in flourescent tubes. What happens to the darkness on the other side of the planet, you may ask? When the eath rotates towards our sun(a giant "Dark Sucker") the sun sucks the darkenss from the planet. However, the sun is not immune to burn-out.When it has absorbed it's limit, it collapses into a "dark hole", indicating that darkness has mass..Fortunately, that will be a long time from the present.

I'm staggered that such a ridiculous and juvenile question has yielded 44 responses - and counting. What a waste of human energy.

You do have to admit, in the light of it all, there are some really good laughs amongst these juvenile, ridiculous answers, and that is what engineering is about, being able to forget the serious rubbish and let of steam. The last few posts have had me in stitches and this is a good thing.

As the initiator of this silly question, I am glad I asked it. This is the 'light' side of 'dark matters'. And I am sure you have had a laugh too. A glimmer of fun and the future is bright.

44 People. Good for you all. I hope you all enjoyed it as I have. It has been a nice respite. Thanks for the contributions and laughs.

NB. Congrats to those who really made me laugh. I needed the laughs, Thanks.

esbuck and HiTekRed. You will each be issued the Gold Seal of the 'Iridescent Illuminated Candle'. (Batteries not supplied). I am still laughing at your comments. Thanks.

Well I am very sorry for those who may see it that way, but for me, it was one of the better laughs I have had for a long time. I probably won't get another for a long time. I have used up my quota this decade. Two in one day is overstepping the limits. Have a good day.

Did you notice the smiley icon at the end of the post?

This means a joke or sarcasm was intended.

Did you notice the date that I posted the "Speed of darkness?"

Don't you feel a little embarrassed warming up someone else's plate, and serving it up as fresh?

Probably not, but that's ok.There is no such thing as an original thought anyway.

Well, I am in a different time zone and the speed of light is odd where I am. I have been in Saturday for quite a while now. But, I still had a great laugh with your answer and that was worth the question. Enjoy your weekend. Now I know how it works, I have the hang of this, I think, Cheers.

Some rather astute scientists of the 18th Century used to believe in phlogiston, also. Do you wish to bring that back, or can we just have the opposite (oxygen), to provide the necessary condition to support a flame? Of course in the case of silanes, no oxygen is strictly needed, in fact, silanes in nitrogen with a continous electric arc for an ignition source will make Si3N4 and H2, abundantly. Is that combustion?

If oxygen and nitrogen are both present, then you get the nitride and water, no arc needed, other than inital spark.

You guys are on to something here. I was heating up some Salmon I had cooked the other day. I put it in the microwave oven and turned it on for 30 seconds, then a second 30 seconds. All of a sudden, the power went out and the microwave oven stopped.

So, did the Salmon absorb the microwaves and suck the power out of the tube? And the tube sucked the power from the power supply. And the power supply sucked the electrons from the 120V house source. Which in turn sucked the electrons out of the transformer. And after all was said and done, we had a brown out, due to a thirsty piece of Salmon.

I rest my case!

Clearly your salmon was too rich in omega-3 fatty acids. The intensity of the vibrational stretching mode of the C=C double bonds was too great for your microwave source (sauce?) causing the magnetron to go into overdrive, thus dragging down the entire system. In future you should consider boiling up your salmon in a suitable solvent to lower the concentration of the offending fatty acids, before microwaving. Easy, really.

What do you think would happen if I blackened the salmon? I'd have a Black Brown out, right? Or would the Blackened Salmon absorb all the Black energy leaving my electricity working fine?

By the way, if I use the same logic with my car, then I should be able to produce gasoline from smog ...

This has to be the goofiest thing I have ever seen posted here!

Just a note... I'm thinking the blackness of the wick is caused by it being burnt.. much like the brain cells of people who use drugs or sniff loctite #495.

See post No 43, It is clear that flourescent tubes do trap the darkness in them therefore it is logically clear that the wick and tubes and bulbs suck darkness. HiTekRedNek has proved the theory. No doubt about it, I too have seen the light and the darkness in tubes. Not so goofy after all!

You want to see the ORIGINAL usage of the term "DARK SUCKER?"

Way back in 2007?

Check out my post #125 on the title"Speed of Darkness" by Jorrie.,2007

Seems like IQ is a philospophunculist, with NPD.

No, IQ is OK actually. He has been medically cleared of any NPD virus and and his last bout of philospophunculist was 15 years ago. The medication was a success.

He was not a member of this forum at the date stated.

But if you bring a candle with you into the dark side won't it absorb it thus setting free the federation of planets and ending that miserable saga of Hollywood butchery?

Re: Do Candles Give Off Light? Or Are They Dark Suckers?

A professor once made a statement that he did not believe in Evil,

and gave the various reasons.

A student asked the professor if he believed in darkness.

"Darkness is simply the absence of light." replied the prof.

"Then Evil could be defined as the absence of God." replied the student.

Re: Do Candles Give Off Light? Or Are They Dark Suckers?

How about this "Schrödinger's Candle" thought experiment:

  • Light a candle
  • Put it in a cardboard box
  • Put the lid on the box

Now, is there light in the box even though there isn't anyone inside the box to see it? How would one know, other than by the lid catching fire from the heat from the candle or opening the lid, leaking all the light out? Or would the oxygen in the air be used up before the box caught fire and there be no light in the box at all? How would one know without opening the lid, thereby destroying the darkness within?

Answers on a postcard, please.

Well if we are doing "Schrodingers candle" then the answer is the candle is both lit and producing light and exstiguished and producing darkness at the same time.

Ah, but then again, only Del would know for sure!

Latest BBC news, Schrödinger's Candle Factory burned down yesterday. In light of the recent fire, the fire investigators are in the dark as to the cause of the fire. It is suspected that someone did in fact place a lid on a box. Unfortunately last night the small village of Schrödingersburg was in the dark.

You had to see that one coming!

For a pretty dumb question this topic has had some great answers and even better humour.
