Shadow Play

09/11/2013 8:45 AM

Ok guys, I am partially lazy but I have tried at least a tiny bit to find out what it could be called.

As you see in the picture the shadow of a ring in a book forms a heart (Thanks Jon Eastwood).

Is there a particular name for this sort of happening where a known shapes shadow forms another known shape?

What other shadow-shapeshifters is out there that you know of?

Interesting. I Googled and didn't get very far either. There's a game called Shadow Shapes that you can download. It doesn't answer your question but it looks like fun!

It could be referred to as a projection, or perhaps visual dissonance?

.

The following isn't exactly the same....but I like it.

The two triangles are not similar. The smaller one has a left angle of 21.8 deg; The larger one has a left angle of 20.556 degrees. There is an illusion created that the two hypothesises are creating a continuous straight line. When the smaller triangle is first to the left, bcause of its greater slope, it creates the square hole.

'....There is an illusion created that the two hypothesises are creating a continuous straight line.....'

.

An excellent hypotenuse! What type of experiment can we devise to test it out?

Carefully draw out the individual pieces on a grid.

Place a straight edge on the apparent overall hypotenuse and observe that it is not a continuous straight line, but in fact two DIFFERENT slopes.

Wait a minute!

.

You've gone and switched up your original use of 'hypotenuse' and 'hypothesis'!

.

Were you feeling cornered... or just decided to come around and see it from my angle?

My hand-shadows never looked as good as the illustration. Maybe if I drew the projection on the wall (like the artist obviously did)...

One link did bring something up:

http://dspace.mah.se/bitstream/handle/2043/12774/Niedenthal-Shadowplay%20.pdf?sequence=2

o tone:

Despite the fact that there are currently a number of enjoyable digital games in which light plays a key role, we lack a vocabulary with which to discuss simulated illumination in game worlds.

Looks like there is still room for improvement!

Re: Shadow Play

This is mostly what I found when searching for various forms of shadows.

It seems to touch a lot on hypothesizing on the original form from its shadow.

Even more words are spend on the ways of using shadows and light in computer games and its impact on 3D visualisation.

I'll keep looking . . .

Guess it is as difficult as for us to know which part of you is lazy? As long as you are composing the trick, call it an experiment with a book, light and ring. When a picture or painting is made of it, call it Evidence, Art or variation on a theme.

As close as it gets.

Yes it is probably Shadow Art or Junk Art Projection (only the ring is not junk!)

So that has certainly a name? How do you call this???

No, i dont mean the form of the cast - the situation where those casts occur.

Something like "reverse projection with meaning"

There is words that make me think there is a word for this. Know this one "Gnomon"?

I believe the term is "projective ambiguity" because our brains fill in the missing/ambiguous parts:

Hey, it's just a book and a lamp!!! Perverts!

I might have found something:

Here something similar it is called a Stereographic projection

Its a cool site and you find it further down.

This is what wiki has to say!

Is that it? A stereographic projection of a ring?

Very artistic.

The ring shadow a heart, the text focus in the book on love.

No matter what it's called, I'd say post #11 demonstrates that it is all in our brains, as per post #12. The only modern detraction from having images like that "captured" is we all wonder what has been Photoshopped. Cynicism has become more rampant as technology advances.

I think I remember a theory that when a dog tilts its head (check out the 3 Pugs. I really got to laughing when I got to that one) with a puzzling look, its seeing the equivalent to this shadow play. Until we can get inside a dogs head, we'll never know for sure. (As I think about it, are dogs the only animals that do this?)

Not sure this is what I had in mind. Paredolia looks at things from the psychological prospective. I was more thinking geometrical. But since depiction is a heart it might as well fall into Pareidolia. I'll keep looking . . .

Did you have a look at the art link?
