DIY HDMI Cables and Connectors

02/18/2014 8:43 AM

I have searched diligently for cable and connectors that I can use to assemble my own custom length HDMI cables.Either crimp or solder pin connectors will suit me.

Keep hitting dead ends.Only find PC board mount,or pre-assembled cables with connectors attached.

The problem with pre -assembled is the size of the connector when you have to penetrate a wall or floor or ceiling.

Anyone have any leads on where to order these items?

Have you tried DigiKey? Seems like they carry just about anything electronic you can imagine.

Yup! Tried them. They only sell pre-made cables with the ends attached.I could just fan out the connectors on a terminal strip, and go into a short cable from there, but a connector is neater and less trouble, and less susceptible to noise, and that just adds another loss to signal.

Would cut-and-splice be an option ? In a protected location. allows for custom lengths.

I never looked for them but you might look for HDMI translators. HDMI probably has a rather short maximum length but translating to fiber or Ethernet might make cable easier to run and might make the maximum distance almost infinite.

I don't know how far you are running but I suspect HDMI won't want to see significant differences in ground voltage. This is especially true in tall buildings when elevator motors kick on, lighting strikes the roof top tower, etc.

Re: DIY HDMI Cables and Connectors

Just in case anyone wants another solution, I have in the past bought two cables, cut off one end from each (after checking the colour coding is exactly the same) and then rejoined them after passing one through the hole.

I cut the individual cables at different lengths (staggered) so that none of the new connectors fill the hole at the same time.....this allows the hole size to be as small as possible, often as small as the cross section of the cable.

For permanent installations, I slip pieces of shrink sleeving over each soldered joint and a bigger one for the whole join plus several inches to make sure that a) it is well secured and b) no moisture can enter the cable.....I like a piece that is longer than the wall is thick!!!

Use a hot air gun sparingly (you don't want to melt the solder!) to shrink the sleeving.

For less permanent installs, I use screw connectors. But I don't really like them.....

Cables are so cheap nowadays, using two of them to get a clean install is far cheaper than buying the correct tools to do a "normal" job.....

Another way, that I have used in the past for certain cables (maybe not HDMI!), is to make two socket boxes, one on each side of the wall, connected to each other correctly and plug standard cables in on each side.....
