Life on Mars????

06/23/2007 6:29 PM

OK, here's next from the ashman....So in a few decades we will be exploring Mars, don't think so myself but for the sake of the question.... You are one of the first team of astro/cosmo,'naughts that went to Mars. Your crew's mission was to explore, return to earth and report. There are 5 of you, you can be anyone of them. The specialties are, Geo, Bio, Chem, Priest and Mission Specialist ( and commander ). You can return back to earth safely and report. BUT! only one of you! Who goes? The rest will die. All are single and have no family. PS: Two of them are female! And the ship flys itself. OK, let's get the thoughts a think'in! Ashman 3 week thread only please.

Obviously, one of the females... They secretly promise to have sex with each guy when they get rescued from Mars.

They must all read their signed contracts and read their copy of space law and follow the premeditated instructions.

If they have to choose!!

My first thought was that one of the woman should leave to avoid conflict but 3 men around 1 woman will be just as bad.

The Priest must return only after he has married the remaining couples. Everybody will live 'happily' ever after for the rest of their lives.

A priest is traditionally:

1 A man.

2 Not supposed not to have wives.

3 The theological facts on Mars is different from Earth. (No Adam, Moses . . . )

4 Cannot provide for much of the needs.

5 Geo, Bio, Chem And the Specialist (Engineer) will be essential to develop a space station.

Bio and Chem are the woman.

I would not pair Chem with Geo because she will dissolve Geo.

Me!

Or maybe, if one of the females wants to get pregnant by me, she can go and at least I'll have some offspring.

(The priest can just whistle for it...dunno why he's there anyhow...was he going to 'convert' the natives?)

Re: Life on Mars????

Given your parameters, and the fact that I am not considering mars, space and the ship to be metaphor's, I would say that the crews findings would be transmitted back to earth by radio (that's the mission objective taken care of). As to the rest of the crew, how about drawing straws. I mean really, there is no right answer. Do you want to die on Mars or do you send someone home in your place? Of course I would send someone else home in my place (but that is the sort of person I am). Why the hell is a priest on the ship? What possible use could there be for a priest to be required on a deep space mission? This is not realistic.

As a side note from someone who ACTUALLY WORKED on one of the many Mars Rover projects (the self-roving one that required no input from earth to do its job of wandering around Mars collecting samples and looking for water, and which project was cancelled due to NASA budget cuts before it was finished). DAMB. I really wanted part of me to go to Mars. DAMB, DAMB, DAMB. Killed before I even left earth (metaphorically speaking).

On a boat you could at least use a priest as ballast (or an anchor), but I can't think of any reason you'd have him/her in a spacecraft. Jeff

If there was a lack of fuel and in need of a one-last-chance maneuver to save everyone, the priest could selflessly jump into space, pushing the spacecraft in the opposite direction.

...this is starting to sound like a cheezy sci-fi movie so I'm going to sign off...

Only the carrier--the one who infected all the others but was auto-immune. Now, what hat (or other accoutrement) would that person wear?

'the one who infected all the others but was auto-immune.'

What's all this about...???

I can find no reference to 'infected' or 'auto-imune' in the question.

The Q says the rest will die...yeah...so?...we all die..eventually!

Who ever returns will doubtless get taxed on their wages too!

(Actually the govt' will doubtless manage to tax those who stay too...but what do they care?)

Re: Life on Mars????

Good point! I was just thinking that they would die of something--and in the manner of "professionals." But you're saying that the deaths are preordained? By being marooned? How cruel for decedants and survivors both. But that scenario presents a problem.

Geo would be off by self, looking at ground, examining rocks... Wouldn't even notice as the boat pulled away.

Chem (he's an associate prof) would be pondering still, and grieving, why his experiment demos never worked in front of the class...

Priest, the least ego-centric by training, would be ministering to despondent Chem...He's the first one Houston selected for sacrifice...to give last rites

Commander would be duty bound to go down with the ship, in an upward kind of way, and inclined to kill anyone who stands in the way, except priest (who wouldn't stand in the way). And he knows how to steer the boat.

So Commander would be it. All the specialties having done their jobs, they are no longer required.

The problem? If Commander can't get away without executing, and reveals his homicide actions during debrief, he might wind up dead-man-walking at Huntsville. No survivors instead of just one.

I would propose the other male quy (neither me nor priest) to go back to earth...

So, the two women, priest and me will remain on Mars... And the priest is not allowed to have sex with any of the two women.....he, he..... ;).....

The priest finds evidence that goes against his belief's in god. Kills the others and returns to insure a cover up.

This weekend I heard on the news that the European Space Agency is seeking volunteers to be isolated for up to 17 months in the effort to study the long term effects of confinement on a voyage to Mars. Thousands of people volunteered in the first week.

Any of you game?

The priest bores the other four to death, administers last rites, and rockets off home.

Nah! You're all wrong!

The two guys and two gals jump the priest and bung him into the spaceship and send him off. Now they can get down to business without someone saying, "but it's a sin!"

Obviously the mission plan was for all to return safely to Earth. Who's fault is it that we can't all go? I say exclude him/her and the rest draw straws.( except me since I already have a plan for the afterlife and have no problem with the fact of my own mortality..... I'm not so sure about the priest.)

Re: Life on Mars????

When you get to Mars you find out that men really do come from Mars and women from Venus and that everything the priest has been preaching is a total load of garbage. The crew then conspire to fake their own deaths and send the priest back to earth by himself with the belief that the rest of the crew were lost.

The crew, who in reality are perfectly healthy, then get together with all the men that are on Mars and build a giant space ship that they use to transport themselves to Venus where all the women are.

The end result is the biggest party the solar system has ever seen and a priest that is none the wiser and thinks he is the sole survivor of a failed mission to Mars.

I'm not sure how much building of the big ship would actually take place. Two women on a planet of men?!?? They'd better just take pictures (then go hide) and put up billboards saying "This awaits you on Venus!" and hope it's enough that everyone stays motivated.

"and build a giant space ship that they use to transport themselves to Venus where all the women are. "

That was the original plan, but the women on venus didn't want the men messing up their planet. They compromised and met somewhere in between. I think they called it Earth.

That, and of Freud's mind-structure falling apart.

When the collective-identity no longer functions for common-effort of survival, it tends to rely on individual effort to keep it alive, instead of the other way around.

Hence, poverty, pollution, and other crap from wars to dreams of colonising far planets, the after-life, and artificial intelligence.
