Just upgrade Gandhi's spinning wheel, and you'll be right in business.

The vertical position of submarine cable is measured in depth. On the other hand ship wiring cables are measured in freeboard.

It is not a simple matter just asking your question. You have to know how cables are made which requires working in the field of manufacturing electrical cables. The machines used were developed by the cable companies at great cost. They are not about to give away for free their secrets. You are asking for the impossible.

AT&T used to operate a marine cable amplifier manufacturing plant on Terminal Ave, Clark, NJ. They didn't make the cables there but the electronics that acted as amplifiers within the underwater cables. They are no longer at that location but contacting AT&T might be a good place to start. I don't know where they relocated to or even if they still manufacture them but AT&T might be able to help you some. Caution though, getting the right person can be a very frustrating task for you but try and use patience.

Also, if you are getting into the marine cable business shouldn't you know what equipment you are going to use for its manufacture before you get into the market. That's sort of like selling milk before you own a cow and know how to milk it.

Good Luck, Old Salt

I just realized that we tend to classify the guys who ask what seem to be the dumbest questions as.....well.....silly. Yes, some are.

But think back to the people years ago who came to North America to begin a new life. Lots of businesses were started in garages, basements and other places we wouldn't dream of starting a business now. And what they set out to make. I'm sure if we were around at the time of some kid who was online at CR4 asking questions about building a computer he called an "apple" in his garage we would have laughed him off the site.

This guy is making wire. Not sure, but it might be copper wire. I first thought it might be steel wire and he wanted to make steel wire rope for applications in a marine environment.

Anyway, so he wants to figure out how to make wire that will survive underwater. Not such a big deal; its been done for a hundred years. But if you're in a backwater like Sri Lanka it might behoove you to ask in the mainstream if anyone can help shortcut your learning curve...He might even be looking on Globalspec.

I also find it interesting that a majority of these kind of questions come here from the area of the world that I would generalize as East Indian. Is it that their culture(s) foster the idea of "if you don't know, ask"? Is the entrepreneurial spirit alive and well there? Is it stupid question central?

But I'm sure a lot of businesses in North America started out the same way...

Jon.

I thought back and my ancestors would ask what the heck is a garage or a basement. Carriage house or cellar they knew about.

I admire you readiness to extend the benefit of the doubt. That is the right thing to do.

.

However, I'm not sure it is even helpful to take someone seriously after they confirm they have done very little in the way of reading about the basics.

.

Check out comment #3. Hanging on to the delightfully absurd idea that 'submarine cable' is essentially the 'ships electrical wiring' specific to a submarine vessel, would be pretty difficult if even a cursory review of basic material had been undertake. Wouldn't you agree?

CR4 readers do not usually disclose commercially sensitive information!

To what are you referring?

Anchor cable - comprising special chain links, or

Hawser cable - comprising steel wire rope

Undersea electrical cable

Cable for marine applications are very numerous

etc., etc,. etc.,

Be more specific, please.

So this marine walks into a bar....

A minute later the Western Union girl runs in, yells, "Hey Marine buddy, you've got a cable-gram". Hence the first marine cable.

On a more serious note: (1) If you have to ask, then wow, you really are lost.

(2) To find your way out of the woods, try to shed some light on your path.

Are we talking multistrand cable to use with cranes? fishing boat cable? Electrical wiring? We do not release sensitive information about submarines here, you could be working for a smuggling operation.
