Why the patterns?

07/01/2007 3:37 PM

The 35 year old florescent fitting were giving trouble and i took it down. after opening I saw the inside was coloured a grayish black on both sides of both chokes. it seems to be carbon like and it could be wiped of partially. Suppose it is heat related.

But what caught my attention was the similar patterns.

What is the cause of this patterns?

I've seen these but never bothered with them. Now that you've brought it up, I've thought about it. Sometimes, it takes someone to point out a mystery that should be obvious.

My thoughts.

They don't seem to be made by smoke from the ballast. If they were, the ballast would be black as well. They do, however, seem to be caused by the heat from the ballast. Dust particles settle on the fixture, get heated by the ballast and eventually dry up and turn black. The pattern is just the heat radiation pattern from the ballast.

GOOD HEAVENS......35 YEARS OLD FIXTURE......

"Tis probably totally illegal now...illegal to throw away in most states....balast has baddies in it....here illegal to throw away burned our lamps too.

It is a heat/dust thingy........CAUSED BY ELECTRO MAGNETIC FIELD POLARIZATION.
