DIY Stone Age Chewing Gum, Glue, Weapons and Clothes

08/18/2014 8:49 AM

I watch a special children's program from time to time on German TV with my Grandson, Sunday mornings.

Yesterday there was (to my mind) a particularly brilliant program that explained certain areas of how Stone Age Hunters made their weapons (bow & arrows) and glued them together with a glue that doubled as a chewing gum!!

These programs are in a huge series using the letters of the alphabet S=Steinzeit or Stone Age. This was in fact the fourth in "S", so it is called S4......

They show all the details of manufacture of the chewing gum/glue and the bow and arrow using Stone age tools to do it. I was fascinated.

As a bonus they made Stone age clothing!!!

The bow is really well made and even rain/water proof.....

I know its in German (for kids), but 95% of the film is basically self explanatory when you watch it...

But if anyone needs more detail, tell me the start time of what you want to know and I will do my best to help.....

Enjoy:-

Stone Age Weapons

I wonder if Del would be interested?

Nice bow (Mollegabet style with stif narrow outer limbs) and the slow mo shot was good. You'd have thought he'd have hit the target from there

Looked like those stone tools were removing the wood nicely, mind I suspect it wasn't seasoned.

I use modern tools but not many power tools.
Bandsaw for roughing out, but then it's all hand tools, draw knife, spokeshave, rasps, scrapers etc.
I have made a working bow with just an axe in under an hour!

I saw a similar program here on the discovery network. They followed the development of string, razors clothes from the stone age to the present. One thing that made me curious was; early man used obsidian to shave with, but what caught my attention was the statement that obsidian was 100 times sharper than a barbers razor and the edge could be 1 micron. Could this be so?

Yes. Some scalpels are made of glass for this reason; those used in eye surgery for example.

Wasn't stone age stuff (e.g. chewing gum, glue, weapons, clothing, doorknobs) pretty much all DIY?

Yes. They even made their own games. Here we see an early neolithic game of 'Rock, Paper, Scissors'

prior to the invention of paper and scissors.

Hence the need to invent paper and scissors!

Hey Del, did it break? Could you make a bow from crepe myrtle trunks? I think it might be possible, and I find myself cutting down major trunks on these ornamental plants with not much use for a hard and springy wood. I suspect it might be brittle unless carefully laminated, etc.

I think I've heard of 'em using crepe myrtle on Primitive Archer. Have a look on there (I think you have to sign up to see the pics)

Ausgezeichnet! Aber Ich cann schprich Deutsch gut nicht. Dieser kraft es gesund und klever, ja?

Now having made a complete fool of myself yet again, I revert to English. The bow making lesson will be and should be unforgettable. Does anyone know if bows can be made from crepe myrtle wood?
