I don't know but this would be better for "caption this" than a lot of the postings so far this year.

That may be the symbol for bisexuals who just can't make up their mind. However, for other bisexuals the symbol is comprised of three letters:

YES

Which is the answer to do you prefer sex with men or women?

A line I remember from an old underground comic about a Dancing Cat who might have been from Omaha(1) made a succinct explanation:

"I'm bi. That means both sides think I'm a pervert."

Notes:

1) And that should be enough clues for those who are interested to find it, while staying sufficiently obscure so I'm not 'promoting NSFW content on the forum.'

Not a very useful symbol if nobody knows what it means.

Circle with an X inside is symbol for utility valve?

From the looks of it, I would guess it means the pole is scheduled to be replaced.

A warning would be, you would think, less cryptic in nature.

Underground basketball court below pole.

I suspect this is a deliberately cryptic note that identifies the type of repair service this pole needs. My real WAG would be that the grounding down lead needs to be repaired.

Well the circle with the x in the middle is Hobo code for good place for handouts, and the arrow down means the handouts have gone to hell are trending down.......but that's just a guess....

Could mean the pole is upside down and needs to be corrected. Is there a cross beam visible?

Of course there is no visible crossbeam.

The pole is upside down.

That's why I asked, this happens occasionally with rural single phase one wire systems. By the apparent age of the pole, if there were a cross beam the marks made when it was planted would be long gone.

That the up pole your not to climb down it.

Symbols on upside down. I guess like everything today the utility company trying to get out of liability issues. They it seems over looked educating the public.

Re: Symbol on Utlity Pole

I think this means the center of the pole should be facing down....or possibly that the pole should not be mounted in a valley.......or it could be a target for drive-by shooters.....or it could mean the pole has been sold to a company, and that is their logo....it could mean that you are entering the territory of some pseudo Japanese ninja group, and that's one of their headbands...or it could be a grounding location for the local cable company( )...

I think it means "drill the hole for the replacement pole on this side." But now you have to find out the real meaning and report back to us.

Like all the others, I really don't know, but my WAG is that it indicates a survey marker. That marker could be one of the metal items above the marker, or it could be at the base of the pole.

Yellow pole in Europe implies an underground gas line position. Could it be that the utility pole has a dual use? Not allowed here I believe.....

Could that symbol also mean some sort of gas check valve?

See here:-

http://www.pipemarkers.com/european-pipe-marker-standards.php

Maybe the USA is similar?

Good Answer

So by extrapolation: the symbol in question means "Do not climb down the pole".

"Beware of splinters/falling pole dancers."

Possibly, "Do not crawl under pole: pole is to be replaced."

Or more likely "Do not climb pole. Pole is to be replaced. Worker attaching sign had three too many beers at lunch."

Then again geocaches tend to be inconspicuous, so as not to invite unwarranted tempering. Well, that and many geocaches are on 'public land,' so the placer of the cache does not have any legal recourse to prevent 'malicious acts' by the Random Public At Large, so the caches need to rely on secrecy, subtlety, obscurity and obfuscation for their security.

A high-visibility marker like that would be as subtle as a spaceship in an pseudo-biblical movie set in Judea during the Roman Occupation.

...

That's two Monty Python references in one week, I'd better ease off before a Brigadier hauls me off for being too silly.

Let's see - a circle with an X in it = do not

A symbol that resembles an arrow, or maybe a spear.

Okay - do not throw spears into this pole.
