Italian Geologists' Sentences Overturned

Of the seven Italian geologists convicted of manslaughter in 2012, six have had their sentences overturned. They have now been acquitted and released. One of the scientists remains in prison.

The seven geologists were convicted of manslaughter for failing to predict an earthquake that killed 309 people and left another 1500 injured. Their convictions triggered outrage from scientists from around the world.

Excellent. I was stunned that they convicted them because I thought the whole case was kind of shaky anyways.

This is good news but I wonder why the seventh geologist is still being held?

There is an interesting twist in this story in this Atlantic article. The seven geologists were convicted by a court that was ... "Seething, the courts accused the scientists of falsely reassuring the community, which left many unprepared for the earthquake, Reuters reported."

However, as the article points out it was the head of the committee, a politician, that announced that everything was perfectly safe. The scientist's paper stated otherwise but the announcement was a misunderstanding of the report. None of the other members of the committee were apparently even charged with a crime.

Oh, that explains it. I had heard that they had told the public that another earthquake would not happen, and that sounded irresponsible. Having a politician involved makes it a lot more understandable.

Reminds me of "Jaws." Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the office building . . . "
