CR4 Good Answer (GA) Convertible to Cash

12/21/2014 12:39 PM

If IHS Global Spec would credit GA for $20 each, who would you think will be better off at the top 10 list this Christmas?

Aside from a few immature children that use GAs and OTs as sticks and stones, they still pretty much work as intended.

If a search is done on a specific engineering topic here, if it shows up, the best answer is always on the short list of GAs, saving a person a lot of reading through meaningless fluff.

The number of GAs that any particular member has, is more indicative of the time spent on here rather than a measure of intelligence.

I think that the time spent here point is the most pertinent one you make. But you have to admit that even in serious posts, there can still be a lot of "fluff" if you read every post.

I spend a few minutes each day looking at posts that interest me, or ones I think I can shed some meaningful light on or give a little pertinent advice . As for GA's, they really have no meaning to me, I use the site as a place to learn something or possibly help someone else along their way.

Well, considering that it's primarily a glorified, but interesting, endless BS session...you can call me "fluffy".

We draw on each others' expertise on questions that pretty much all seem obvious to those in the particular field, and most could simply be googled...the rest is filler.

...and it's the filler that's fun.

As long as GAs have the intended use on the tech questions, the ones passed out on silly or irrelevent threads don't matter one way or the other.

Amen.

But I spend a lot more than a few minutes on them, and I read EVERYTHING that interests me. And I don't pay much attention to either GAs OR OTs, since there are gems to be found everywhere. And often, the Good Answers are included in humorous OT comments (at least some of the ones I'd have GAed, are!).

But I seldom fail to learn something new, no matter where I read in CR4. And sometimes I offer some info. Good? I don't know. Someone else has to decide that!

If you post a crap comment, and get some mates to mark it as good, you can be pretty sure that more discerning members will negate those votes. It's true that some crap gets through as "A Good Answer With Two Votes (or more)", but not much. As soon as a comment gets marked GA, it draws more attention, and peeps who disagree will rapidly reverse the standing.

GAs have become more of a popularity contest amongst the Good Ol' Boys as well as being a measure of GroupThink and are therefore completely worthless as reliable indicators of Good Answers.

AP #2 said the system is crap and I wholeheartedly agree. I'd give a GA for that reply but, as this is CR4, on this forum that would be slap in the face.

Giving a GA to an anonomous poster is pi$$ing in the wind even more than giving one to a named member.

On political topics that can be very true, such as global warming, but the percentage of that behavior is not as high as you might think.

However, on technical topics I have found that GAs tend to be awarded to those who provide the best answer to the question, particularly if it is well articulated or presented with data to back up the answer.

I have also seen GAs issued for good comic relief and I have awarded more than a few on those merits myself.

Personally, I think that anyone that complains about the system just takes it much too seriously and should read more comic relief.

Not on this forum they aren't. Not with the hostility posters are met with here. Looking over some the questions posted here by non-anonymous posters, I marvel at how many begin with a preamble along the lines of "don't flame me for this." They've read many of responses on this forum and know to expect it.

I'm all for Anonymous Posters; the hostility peeps meet with here makes it desirable. They didn't poison this pot; we did. I can't blame peeps for posting anonymously and, the fact that they do with such frequency tells more about the forum and its atmosphere than it does about them.

If we want peeps to post non-anonymously maybe we outta stop being assholes. Anonymous Posters aren't the disease, they're a symptom of a deeper problem: us.

This post is a good example of the quality of anonymous posts and posters.

There is no question posed. No problem articulated. Not even an interesting topic from another source.

There is only one intent here, and that is to troll the forum and start the typical whine: "If IHS Global Spec would credit GA for $20 each, who would you think will be better off at the top 10 list this Christmas?"

Response" GA system of CR4 is totally crap."

Finally, "popularity contest amongst the Good Ol' Boys as well as being a measure of GroupThink and are therefore completely worthless as reliable indicators of Good Answers".

Encourage them all you want. We all have opinions.

It's worth enough to read and reply twice, yes? Can't be that bad, especially when one can read the title without opening the thread. If you could tell it was troll's post from just the title why did you stop in?

Is someone making you read these posts?

The opening post wasn't so inflammatory.

It went downhill when the other two fed on the first one.

Looked like a contrived set-up to me. Maybe just a minor feeding frenzy.

You?

I'll sell my GAs for anything over a penny apiece.

Interested parties can PM me for payment info.

I also challenge anyone to find a thread about a serious technical subject, that doesn't have the answer covered, along with other pertinent information, in the GA list at the top.

Global Spec does get some value from us since they get paid for advertisements on this site. But, most of us can be summarized as getting something for free.

When I am giving someone something for free and they cop an attitude and demand more I usually turn my back and walk away. I guess it is good that I am not in charge.

I find that the GA is a lot like local car shows - if all you want is to garner a GA, then you find your niche and stick to it. (fortunately I don't think anyone does this)This is just like making the rounds of local car shows - I knew which show would reward my Ford higher than the other makes, and I made sure to make those shows. Similarly, there are certain subjects that are most certain you get you a GA. So, to answer this, since one can not ascertain ahead of time which subject is most likely to be posted in the next year, one would have to ask the question with qualifications. Who would top the list on pressure instrumentation? Who would top the list on VFD questions? Who would top the list on concerns about fracking? And so on and so on... This would become a very tedious process indeed. Fortunately, most of us are willing to expound on most any subject, which keeps this a lively forum.

Dear Friend,

The answer for your Question is "NO."

I am of the view that CR4 is meant for enriching your knowledge, and solving your (or my) working problem. This forum, takes us to our class room of our student days. A pleasant experience, and refreshing (y)our memories.

Be careful, if your GA is diminished or robbed (which happened twice for me, perhaps several times for other CR4 members) you may have to refund the amount you receieve.

LET US SHARE OUR KNOWLEDGE and EXPERIENCE, thereby build a better Society and Contribute to the Society.
