How to Build a Doll's House

01/15/2015 3:16 PM

Could plans be used for the building of a doll house; using model airplane skills and the use of drawings, for model airplanes struts, and different views for example,; be applied to the construction of an ancient castle; in this case based on a sand castle made by the latest sand molds.?

I need an English teacher.

Oh well. Do not get sand in the library book.

Best thing is to try the puzzles in chess magazine: Look for the answer and try to work backwards to the original diagram and see the reasoning involved. Skewers, pins, ect.

Forking check, double check.

Take a day or so to think it all out.

One way to work this all out is to take a walk. No, not really. There are a lot of chess magazines which give puzzles. For me, I look at the diagram and try to see what the best move would be: For example Chess Life, May 214, page 2l. Problem 1 (Fork) and then go to page 71 and see what the answer is. And why is it the best answer? It can be understood. provided I think it out. No rush.

I have a lot of background on this somewhat juvenile hobby, but so what. Onward and upward.

Watch makers, carpenters, model air plane enthusiasts; you name it.

This idea could be developed and refined by carrying along a lunch pail which naturally opens up- hinges and such. Inside would be contents for the beach picnic. Be sure to take along a chess magazine that has various puzzles . I have to look for the answer in the back of the magazine and work backwards to the chess diagram. Then draw out some ideas from the library book that has drawings and pictures of ancient castles. Popular Mechanics magazine left on the beach towel might help. Draw on napkins from the beach picnic.

Chess tutors are certainly smart. Between you and the chess tutor who accompanies you on the search for pebbles that could used for developing a castle, something effective might happen.

An end result might be an ancient castle doll house based on the opening of a "box" which could be the inside of the castle. Good hinges are a must. Rocks found on the beach could come into play. In junior high we made pig boards with the outline of a pig.

Oh well, the game yesterday was fun to watch..

Is there such a thing as putting a film or cloth over a sand castle, spraying it with some solution which would solidify the film or cloth so the resulting cover would maintain the same shape as the sand castle?

It would need to be quite stiff.

I think a clear and somewhat detailed photo/drawing of your structure will help

Some where along all this I mentioned watch maker skills. Here is a step into the forest:A Timely Design Tool

How do you go about designing the Aeternitas Mega 4 Grande Sonnerie Westminster Carillon, purportedly the most complex time piece in the world, with 1,483 individual elements and 205 sub-assemblies? For Swiss watchmaker Franck Muller, you harness the SolidWorks suite of CAD, PDM, and simulation software poackages, reports Design World. Those tools shortened the design cycle by 40% and cut development costs by 60%.

Trying to add a comment about cloth or film covering a sand castle. Wife gets upset; tried path finders, not sure how to continue. Got to get back to the mundane things of retirement. At least I can swim.

A cloth or film, pressed to the surface of sand castle and sprayed with whatever might stiffen; then pulled off the castle. Experimental of course.

I think model railroading techniques might suit you better (google image):

Most definitely!

This is the way that many doll houses are made, especially those of a special house such as the house you live in. Many model railroading scenes are hand crafted in the same manner. Not all are the manufactured buildings, semaphores, roundhouses, etc. The best ones are taken from large prints or pictures. Same for planes, ships, boats in bottles, cars, famous buildings and such.

It is a great hobby and some highly skilled "model makers" make a lot of $. I got much joy when in my young years from making train scenery and half-boats.

Two important tools are the triangular "Architects Scale" and the "Engineers Scale". They make scaling down/up much easier from plans, prints, pictures and sometimes the actual thing.

Go to a "Sand Sculpture" show or contest. Many of the sculptures are scaled up or down from real things. Besides that some of them are interesting and beautiful. There is a lot more than just castles, how about a black widow spider?

Good Luck, Old Salt

No interesting sand sculptures are made by 'the latest sand molds"; this multi-year quest is in vain.

Only if you want your model castle to look like a doll house or model plane. Ancient castles the building material was stone. Today's doll house is wood. And a plane made from stone would have have some high propulsion to get off the the ground. So I doubt your drawing for the struts would show you how to lay the stones.

There has been couple hundred years of improvement in construction techniques.

I have seen some pretty realistic looking model stone arched bridges a buddy of mine has done in his train garden. The stone cut from blocks of Styrofoam. Shaped, stained and glued together.

Maybe a few stones could be placed in the doll house.

One could walk along the beach with his chess tutor and look for pebbles and such for constructing a realistic ancient castle

Bucket and spoon, big and small, might hit help.

Just call me for dinner.
